If you go to the profile page of a user you've banned, nothing indicates you've done so. It could be displayed at the top of the profile.

Allow users to specify an account as a roleplaying account

Area:
accounts, statistics

Summary:
Allow users to specify an account for roleplay without affecting paid account services.

Description:
This is a suggestion mainly for statistical purposes! Dreamwidth has an active, sizable roleplaying community, a consequence of which is that there are a lot of "character accounts" scattered across the site. As someone who's very curious about DW's site statistics, I can't help but think that means there's a lot of essentially fictional data skewing things one way or another.

If possible, I'd like for roleplayers to be able to specify an account as being made for roleplay. It would have to be in a way that doesn't affect paid services, since some get paid/paid premium accounts and some don't. In addition to being able to choose it during account creation, there would also need to be an option for existing accounts to "switch over", since there are many, MANY existing character accounts.

Challenges involved: oh boy! I'm not at all familiar with site coding, especially Dreamwidth's, so I can't imagine how complicated this might be. I also don't know how many people would actually use this option, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway.

Some privacy incoherence

Area:
Profile

Summary:
There's a way that allows people to know I have updated my journal with a filter entry (and they aren't inside that filter).

Description:
Ok so here's what I've noticed:

Imagine you have a few friends and you want to post an entry to prepared a surprised b-day party just for one of them. You don't want him or her to know about it so you'll post a filter entry right? but, if that friend is smart enough and have some curiosity, he or she could discover that I've posted a new filter entry. That's a problem because that person could feel upset about it thinking that I have something to hide to him or her.

The way he or she could discover it is by my profile page. There's some information that I can't hide that tells her or him that there's something new that she or he isn't allow to see. That information is the number of "journal entries" and the "last updated".

The example I wrote up there is just one of multiple cases where it'll be necessary to hide that information and I can't think a reason why I couldn't hide it.

So, my suggestion is to allow to hide that information as I do with other things like my birthday, my location, etc.

Description:
There is a little lock icon that shows next to the "contact details" at the top of the profile page where the email address is listed, if that address is set to be visible only to the access list. However, there is more contact info shown on the profile page, in "other services" in the "connect" section, and there is no indication next to that section to remind/reassure the user that the info is only visible to the access list. I see a suggestion for invisibility for communities was rejected (sadly) but what about an option to hide the member list?

Description:
I'd like more privacy for members of communities with a sensitive subject matter or to avoid harrassment of members. I know you can opt not to subscribe to a community so that it doesn't show on your personal profile, but members of a community can still be identified from the profile of the community itself. Example; under another username on LJ, I belong to a small community which has attracted a very unsuitable would-be member. This person has been refused membership and is now pestering members to plead on his/her behalf, both on their journals and even by tracking them down on other sites via their profile pages. If DW would let us hide our member list, we could import to here knowing that even if our unwelcome guest found our community, s/he would'nt be able to see our (changed) usernames and start harrassing us again.

Thanks for reading. :)

move journal title controls back to Edit Profile

Area:
Styles/Profiles

Summary:
Move the editing controls for journal title and subtitle from Edit Journal Style to Edit Profile.

Description:
Once upon a time on LJ, journal titles and subtitles were edited via the Edit Profile page, and everybody was happy. (There was a dark time previously when journal titles and subtitles didn't even exist, but we don't like to talk about those days.) However, one day For Some Reason those controls were moved to the Customize Journal Style page. Much consternation and confusion raged across the land, for the journal title and subtitle and in fact THE FIRST THING one sees on one's profile, so it seems pretty natural to want to edit it there; in fact, some journal styles hide the subtitle completely. WHY IS IT EDITED THERE. WHERE IS THE LOGIC. BUFFY QUOTE.

...cried the people.

Years later, Dreamwidth came to exist and forked off of LJ's existing code, and that was great. Even greater was the fact that DW was hard at work at correcting some of LJ's more questionable coding decisions. Great, great stuff. However, this fork included the illogical switch of title/subtitle control, and thus it still sits in Customize Journal Style, making way less sense than it would to be in Edit Profile.

Sadness, and also it just took me like two minutes to find because seriously, why is it there?!

I propose that Dreamwidth undo this illogical decision and restore title/subtitle to its rightful place under Edit Profile. The only drawback I see is that it may confuse people who have gotten used to it being under Customize; but since Edit Profile is really the natural place to look for it I think that will be the lesser confusion. Plus, there could be a link where that control used to be pointing people in the right direction (or at least that link to Customize could exist under Edit Profile so I never waste two minutes again). Also it might be hard to code or something. But probably it would be awesome and everybody would be happy again, and that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Why? Plurk is widely used social networking site for fast paced messaging, similar to Twitter, but much more organized. It's especially prominent in roleplay communities or just as an easy way to stay in touch. Description:
I love having the OpenIDs in a block all by themselves underneath the rest of the usernames in Gives Access To. It makes looking through the list so much easier. Suprisingly enough (to me at least) the same wasn't done for the Subscriber list. In my experience the Subscribers list can often be even more in need of de-cluttering than the Gives Access To list. Click to show the contextual popup, instead of showing it on hover

Area:
journals, site interaction,

Summary:
The contextual popup which contains user-specific links shows up when you hover over the userhead before a username, or someone's icon. I'd like to suggest adding an extra "click" so that it only shows up when the user calls it up and can't be summoned by accident.

Description:
The contextual popup has several subtle issues, because it's triggered by hovering over something, and closed by moving your mouse off of it:

* you can trigger it accidentally by hovering over an icon or userhead while reading a comment -- the unexpected animation can be distracting, or the box might cover up content you want to read

* it fades out after a few seconds: this may be too short for people with fine motor control issues. Conversely, it may be too long for someone who has accidentally triggered the thing and just wants it to go away!

* no way to trigger it by keyboard; no way to indicate that there's anything even like this functionality to keyboard-only users

I suggest that hovering over an icon or userhead should only show a small image within the icon or userhead. This can be clicked to open the contextutual popup menu.

Pros:
* less chance of unexpected behavior and animation
* less chance of accidentally covering up the text you're reading
* more control over how you interact with the site
* it may be possible to make this keyboard friendly, by also adding the clickable trigger when someone focuses on an icon or userhead.

cons:
* adds an extra click for people who are used to the old behavior of the contextual popup showing on hover
* might not be obvious how to open the contextual popup / may not be obvious what the button does
* unexpected animation still there, just a lot subtler
* the small image overlaying the userhead will mean that you can no longer click directly on the userhead to go to that user's profile; however the link is still in the contextual popup menu (see ETA below, which may make this less of an issue)
* the small image overlaying the icon *may* make it harder to click directly on the icon to go to that user's icon page; however that link can be added to the contextual popup menu

Here's a screenshot of how it looks now, where the contextual popup shows up when you hover right over the icon.
http://afunamatata.com/dreamwidth/journal/2011/08/contextual-hover.png

Here's a quick and dirty mockup of how the extra clickable link might work:

When you hover over an icon: http://afunamatata.com/dreamwidth/journal/2011/08/icon-on-hover.png
When you click on the trigger: http://afunamatata.com/dreamwidth/journal/2011/08/icon-on-click.png

When you hover over a userhead (see ETA below for a revised version)): http://afunamatata.com/dreamwidth/journal/2011/08/userhead-on-hover.png
When you click on the trigger: http://afunamatata.com/dreamwidth/journal/2011/08/userhead-on-click.png

Mockups were made in less than ten minutes, so please assume that fiddly bits like where the trigger overlays text in the contextual popup can be fixed (and will be!)

Offer a "Preferred pronoun" field on the profile page

Area:
Profile

Summary:
It would be helpful to get a "preferred pronoun" field on the profile screen in addition to the "gender" field. This would facilitate discussion and linking to other users' posts. It would be important to include a "Rather not say" option, of course.

Description:
It can be difficult to link to other DW users' posts or mention other users if you don't happen to know which pronoun they prefer. Not everyone is comfortable asking You can always choose something gender-neutral or talk around it, of course, but that can be syntactically awkward, and whenever possible I want to respect other users' preferences. If someone has a gender selected, that can provide a clue, but it's not a guarantee, and of course not everyone does.

Having a space in the profile to specify a pronoun seems like a quick fix. The field could be free text if compiling a list of possible pronouns is problematic, but either way it should include the (default) option not to display a pronoun.

Edited on 10/8/2011 to add that I got some of my facts wrong in this post re: the existing profile options, due to some confusion over different sites. Also, I explained the possible benefits of this very poorly. It's not just an issue of social ease for those of us linking to other users; it's also, and far more importantly, about being aware of how users of this site want to be approached. Based on comments, if this is implemented (as I still think it should be) it's very important that the field be free text.
