Title:
Add Discord ID to profile under Connect Services

Area:
profiles, third party integration

Summary:
Adding a new option for Discord to the Connect section of user profiles.

Description:
Discord (https://discordapp.com/) has been gaining popularity particularly among RPers in recent months as an alternative to AIM for a central messaging system. It'd be really nice if we could add our Discord user ID the same way we can add our AIM screen names to our profiles.

Their formats are CHOSENNAME#4DIGITS where the 4 digits are randomly assigned, but consistent, and the whole thing becomes your actual username - so if you chose the username "Penguin", Discord will give you "Penguin#2792" and that is your username.

Discord doesn't host profile pages outside of the chat app itself, so I don't think you could do the <user name=name site=discord> function, but it's not needed. Just the ability to list the username itself is really the useful bit.

Styles: make it easy to list your IDs on other websites in profile module

Area:
modules, interoperability

Summary:
Dreamwidth displays links to other sites on your profile page but not on your journal. I suggest adding picture links to your other accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) to the profile module (or to another module if that's a better idea).

Description:
The idea is that you could enter your usernames on other sites and Dreamwidth would automatically create the appropriate picture links to the other accounts using the correct logos and display them into your profile module. This can already be done manually in the custom text module but I don't see why it shouldn't be easier to do. This is a pretty standard feature on several major websites now and I feel it's missing on DW. Ideally this could be further automated by using the 'other sites' part of your profile page and a simple option such as 'show links to other sites as filled out on my profile'. However, this part of our profiles is missing major sites such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube so that would limit the usefulness of this new feature imo.

A lot of my readers these days don't come from LJ or Dreamwidth, may not have an OpenID, or even if they do have one (most likely Google) don't know what an OpenID is. Title:
Crosspost to TinyLetter

Area:
crossposting

Summary:
Add TinyLetter to the available crosspost options.

Description:
TinyLetter creates newsletters that are basically blog entries, but in addition to being posted on the TinyLetter site, they're emailed to subscribers. TL users get a few basic MailChimp tools like tracking opens and clicks.

Enabling crossposting from DW to TL would be a relatively easy way for DW users to permit non-DW users to sign up for emailed updates of DW posts. It would also give DW users access to those MailChimp tools, which can be handy.

The TinyLetter web interface is quite straightforward: you get a subject line and a message body, and that's it. The message body permits formatting. TL also accepts posts via email. This would probably be the simplest way to crosspost from DW to TL: send the DW post as a formatted email to the user's unique TL post-by-email address. Here's what the TL FAQ says about that:

"To publish through your private address, create a message in your own email client to send to the address. Format and design it however you like, and be sure to include a subject line. When you're ready, just hit send. We'll create a new draft in your account and send a confirmation email as soon as it's done. After the draft is created you'll be able to log in to TinyLetter to review and send your message. Or, you can reply to the confirmation email we send once the email is beamed in. To send the message directly from your email client, simply reply to the confirmation message, keeping the subject line and address field intact, and we'll send out that newsletter to your list of subscribers."

So the user would need to confirm via email, but it's still faster and easier than copying and pasting a post from DW to TL.

If there's a TL API, there's no mention of it on their website, but one might exist.

Possible advanced feature: only crossposting posts that have the "tinyletter" tag.

Enable Diigo to crosspost to Dreamwidth

Area:
external sites, crossposting

Summary:
I can set my Diigo account to automatically crosspost recent bookmarks to other sites, including LJ and Wordpress. Dreamwidth should get in touch with Diigo about enabling the same to DW, and should set whatever permissions are necessary for it to do so.

Description:
The summary is it, really. The only alternative for Diigo users is to manually crosspost our bookmarks on a regular basis, which is a headache for so many reasons.

Diigo's existing crossposting utility works on LJ, so it should be just as safe and workable for DW.

The main stumbling block is whether Diigo is wiling to implement the necessary changes on their end. And it seems likely that if they were contacted by administrators saying "we're willing to make it possible on our end," they would be amenable to going for it.

YYY being whatever you chose.

Profiles can be public or private (but will always display your avatar).

I'd love to see an AOL site=aol/aim.com aim icon! The little yellow running man. In fact I'd love to see more "networking" site="networkingsite".coms too. The list is pretty amazing to be honest, but the AOL would be awesome. AOL/MSN/YIM etc.

Description:
The short paragraph pretty much. Sums. It up. Messenger things now that we have such an impressive list already. It's not a huge imperative thing, I just figured I'd toss it out there. I searched "AOL" and "instant messenger" and found nothing on them. I'm also surprised not to see facebook on here too, not annoyed or anything just odd not to see it on the "site=##.com" list.

I do realize under "Contact Information and Links" then "Other Sites"
there's a ton of them there to give your info, but I'd love to have the ability to do so in posts or that sorta thing without linking the icon myself and etc. Again not the biggest deal in the world but I did wanna toss it out there!

I can see all arguments for and against, we can link the icons as pictures/etc so it's not as big a deal. I'm totally there with you, this is the least of the worry of a huge site with so many upcoming awesome things going on.

Thanks so much for hearing me out! I appreciate that and know that you guys, even if you can't comment to everything, are watching and understanding. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to/should mention names, but someone on the staff helped me a lot with a recent loss even though it was above and beyond just a request to archive a journal. I have several accounts on Scribbld.com that I would like to import content from, but Dreamwidth doesn't seem to allow for this option (only livejournal and insanejournal). I could go through every entry and repost it to another account on dreamwidth, but that would be a tedious task. LJarchive doesn't work on my mac, and I've tried using it on someone else's PC, but for some reason it isn't functioning on there either because there's some component missing in the operating system or something.

Enable Embedding GitHub Gists as Media in Posts

Area:
posting, media

Summary:
Enable adding GitHub Gists, which are embedded as scripts, in posts, via the 'add media' option so that DW users can post short blocks of formatted source code for discussion and review.

Description:
Gists are text files hosted on GitHub enabling developers to post short snippets of code for review and comment.

GitHub provides a way to embed a gist on a site, as a script file:

<script src="https://gist.github.com/3290622.js?file=foo.js"></script>

However, DW wisely prevents scripts from being embedded as either media or post content because XSS :)

But adding gist.github.com to a whitelist would enable coders of all skill levels to quickly post nicely formatted snippets of code for review, discussion, and comment.

Title:
Integrate better with LiveJournal's "spoiler" tag

Area:
entries, comments, importing, crossposting

Summary:
LiveJournal has implemented a <lj-spoiler> tag, which should be accounted for when importing and crossposting.

Description:
There's been past discussion (most recently http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/1303478.html ) about how to best make a spoiler/trigger/not-expanded-by-default tag work for entries and comments on Dreamwidth. LiveJournal has since implemented a method to do just this, and it would be wise to remain compatible with it.

When importing, entries with <lj-spoiler> tags should retain the type of concealment it is, the custom warning text if any, and the text within.

When importing, comments with <lj-spoiler> tags should not lose any data.

When Dreamwidth implements its own version, things tagged with <lj-spoiler> should be backwards compatible - if already posted, they should be treated accordingly.

New crossposted entries containing the <lj-spoiler> tag should be passed on to LiveJournal without mangling the tag; when our version happens, it should convert to LiveJournal syntax when crossposting to LiveJournal, just as usernames are.

New entries containing the <lj-spoiler> tag should be displayed sensibly on Dreamwidth, either consistent with a regular <cut> tag (if that's quick and easy to set up before implementing it properly) or properly.

Whatever method we use should remain accessible. If implemented with scripts for inline expansion, non-script viewing should retain any custom warning text and the fact that this was concealed, and give sufficient time and space for people to decide to stop reading (this should accommodate very fast readers who skim and can absorb the gist of whole sentences/paragraphs in seconds before their executive function has caught up, as well as screen reader users who may need time to tell their screen reader to stop reading). It should also not suck for mobile device/small screen users.

One possible method would be to automatically add "spoiler space" as was done manually on email lists of old: for example, typing <mask text="OMG!">WTF!!</mask> (or however it's decided to do locally) might result in:

*** MASKED CONTENT: OMG! ***

*
*
*
*
*

WTF!!

*
*
*
*
*

*** END MASK ***

Expose "originally posted as" on imported entries and comments, as an option that can be added to styles if desired.

Description:
Some users would like to be able to see where a comment or entry has been imported from, if they are importing from several locations or different names, or wish to display the history in full on Dreamwidth. Other users would prefer to keep the current display. I propose that the importer is updated to preserve the username and site/OpenID name at the time of import, so that this information is available to style designers, who can then create styles with it displayed, or add it to their styles as an option for those who want to show it on their journals. For previously imported entries where the original import site has not been saved, this would display something like "Originally posted as: information not available".

The one thing I really miss from LJ is Twitter posting. I don't think comments should be crosspostable or anything from a journal that you don't own. But when posting a new item to your journal (or maybe to a public community?) I would really like the option to send a Twitter notice.
