Icon Downloads

Area:
icons

Summary:
Ability to download all current icons on your journal (active or inactive).

Description:
I know that I'm not the only one that sometimes looks at their long list of icons after some kind of computer failure, and wants to back them up on the new machine. Or maybe they were linked by a url and you forgot to save them. Maybe you stopped having a paid account, but want to be able to reupload them with ease after you get a chance to pay for the account again (Submitting another suggestion on this topic as well).

I think it would be very helpful if there were some option that would let you batch save the image files currently on your account, preferably with the keyword or description as the name. Compression has improved and should allow users to download a backup of their icons in a zip file they can unpack on their computer.

In addition and/or alternatively, perhaps there is some way to make a metadata file that would take less room than the icons, but contain the information about them and their keywords and descriptions, or a file that can be added to the zip folder that contains this information to make the re-upload of icons easier.

Increasing the length of the icon description.

Description:
Hello! I have friends that use screen readers, and a problem I have found is that when I am trying to describe icons, especially if it's a text icon with a longer quote on it, there's not enough room for me to properly describe what's going on; I either have to leave a lackluster description, or resort to chat speak, and sometimes even that doesn't really do the trick. It would be really helpful if DreamWidth allowed longer icon descriptions! It should be easy to allow more characters, and there shouldn't be any drawbacks, I don't think? Thank you for your consideration.

Sort Icon Page by Active/Inactive Status

Area:
icons

Summary:
On the View Icons page (and possibly the Upload Icon page) allow a sort option which will group Active/Inactive icons (preferably Active on the top/first page) together for ease of finding them.

Description:
Since there are already sorting options for Keyword and Upload Order, having this additional sorting option would be beneficial for accounts which have had paid or premium status previously and are expired, etc. particularly now that there are permanent icon slots available which increase the overall capacity of an account's icon slots.

I believe the method dictating which icons are left active go by most-used in journals followed by most recently uploaded? (I could be wrong on this, it's just what I've observed). However these options both leave active icons scattered through the overall icon page(s). Although the icon browser does only load active icons IF the user still has a paid, it doesn't help free accounts who may be trying to search out 15 active icons from 100, 250, or even more.

I'm not foreseeing any immediate problems if this were implemented due to the fact that there are other existing sort options, but if anyone spots something I've missed...?

Split out the upload icon tool from the edit icons page

Description:
At the moment, when you go to upload a new icon, it has to load all your existing icons first. This is particularly difficult if you have lots of icons and a slow connection. It would be better if there was a page where you could upload new icons, and the page for editing existing icons was separate. This would also make it easier to improve both pages' usability in the future. If we wanted to get really clever, we could paginate the edit icons page the same way we've done with the view icons page, or only split it for people who have more than 100 icons. But any kind of split would do the job of letting me upload one icon without waiting for ages.

People use the 'comment' field in very different ways: to give credit to the icon maker, provide additional keywords, categories or information, mention whether it's shareable or even don't use it at all. Title:
Icon keywords

Area:
Icons

Summary:
The icon keywords are an old and outdated system, it'd be easier for users if a better management system was put in place, especially for high numbers of icons.

Description:
Icon keywords really need to be updated. It is difficult and cumbersome managing keywords for icons especially when having a high number of icons. The current system has literally not changed much since 2001. It would be nice having a sort of keyword managing place, one where you could assign icons (and drag and drop would be awesome there!) or rename or merge keywords as you can for entry tags. Additionally, keeping a list of keywords that you've used but don't currently have an icon assigned would be helpful and useful to roleplayers. Even if it's just a static list would let the user see what they've used. As denise said here:
http://dw-biz.dreamwidth.org/7186.html?thread=773394#cmt773394
it might be computationally expensive getting a retroactive list from old comments, I'd suggest not doing that though and just adding a old keyword if someone actively views a comment with an old keyword- it would be looking for that icon anyway and it'd just display the default when it doesn't find it, though I'm not familiar with how the process works exactly.

Edit!!!! In order to clarify + additional:

It is extremely awkward managing keywords from the icon page from a little tiny text area box, particularly when having many large sets of keywords on one icon with only commas as a separator. I suggest a separate manage area for a list of icon keywords currently in use, and possibly a list of keywords used in the past for reference and the ability to reassign old keywords to new icons. People do not always remember exactly the way they typed a keyword they don't actually have saved.

We have a management page for entry tags, where we can delete, rename, merge and view what is tagged to a specific entry tag. I am suggesting something similar for keywords- if not their own page, at least a section on the icon upload page where we do not have to deal with the tiny text area and only the text area. I can see being able to select a keyword with a check box and hitting a "Rename" button to be able to rename keywords, or select two keywords via check box and hit a "merge" button, or select some "delete" button. Then possibly an "add new keyword" button. That would make keywords more manageable and I don't think it'd require a lot of work, and we already have a check-and-hit-button to delete icons themselves.

We can only rename keywords, we cannot merge them. I've tried to merge keywords, and it didn't work. There is no obvious option nor way to merge keywords. Trying to rename one into another fails. -This is on Bugzilla and is already on the to-do list, but it's part of the bigger management system, so I thought I should include it.

Renaming keywords is sort of a hit or miss using the text area on the icon page, especially if there are multiple keywords to an icon. You do not know if the rename was successful until you go to check comments made with the old keyword- there is absolutely no confirmation, and it is far too easy to typo and create a horrible Frankenkeyword out of the one you're trying to rename and one of the others. Then it becomes annoying trying to undo that because there is no undo button, either, and you have to figure out what keyword you renamed, fix the innocent keyword, and try to rename the suspect keyword again.

This is the same old tired system that has been in use since LiveJournal's early days: By that, I am implying: surely with new coding and technology we should be able to have a more dynamic, easy to use icon and keyword management option.

Title:
Drag+Drop Feature for Multiple Icon Upload

Area:
icon uploading

Summary:
The current system requires users to repeatedly "Browse" for the file, which can be tedious if you're uploading 50+ icons at once. The Drag+Drop feature would allow users to drag their icon image files into the drop box and upload large batches with much less clicking and hassle.

Description:
-- SUGGESTION --

Previous entries have mentioned the Drag+Drop feature for managing icons once uploaded and other methods for simultaneous multiple icon loads, but there has not been one on point for both of them combined. The closest I found was where someone in the comments suggested a similar system via Flickr back in 2010.

As mentioned in other suggestions, the current system requires users to select the file via "Browse File," which pops up the window for users to select from from their computer. However, users can only do this one at a time for each selection. So if a user has 50+ icons to upload at once, this process can be tedious, especially if the icons are all in one folder.

With a Drag+Drop feature, users could 1) simply select their files from their own folder window, 2) drag it into the drop box, and 3) upload them all at once. Another possible feature is allowing users to arrange them in the order they wish to upload.

To keep it simple and focus only on the uploading aspect, this particular suggestion does not include the keyword and additional comment/description fields. Users would have to go back through to fill those fields after the icons are uploaded, but that's less tedious than having to individually click through a folder to choose an icon and disrupt the process. However, if it is possible to do so without complicating the system, then including those fields would also simplify the mass icon uploading process.

-- ISSUES --

The main issues I see are coding and computer compatibility. Javascript/Java apps, Flash, or ActiveX will most likely be needed and not all computers may have them. Thus, this should actually be another option rather than the default. The default should remain as the current system already in place. The Drag+Drop feature would then be more of a secondary option that users could choose.

There could be a link at the top and it would either take them to another page or pop up the Drag+Drop box right there on the main "Manage Userpics" screen. The Drag+Drop feature is also less beneficial for very small batches. The current system is actually more optimal if they wish to upload a small number of icons, like one or two. Thus having the Drag+Drop as a secondary alternative would be the better fit.

-- CONCLUSION --

I think this system would be really beneficial, especially since many file uploading sites have this feature available as an upload option. With the current system, I actually get lost in which icons I've already chosen to upload since I can only see the first part of my hard drive directory rather than the actual file name itself. So I constantly have to go back and see which one is already selected for upload. The Drag+Drop would give an additional visual aid for users when uploading icons as well as arranging them prior to upload. But I realize that there are drawbacks to this system, and as mentioned not everyone would be able to utilize it.

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Merging Icon Keywords

Area:
Icons

Summary:
Several keywords can be merged into just one keyword all at the same time.

Description:
This suggestion is intended to improve icon uploading and use, more specifically through keywords.

Having been a user on LJ for several years, I’ve accumulated lots of icons and icon keywords. When I no longer like the icons I delete them and add the keywords onto another icon (this is mostly the case for RP journals- for instance I swap two angry icons for one new one). Over time those keywords have built up so I have two or three to one icon. I really like the rename keywords feature here on Dreamwidth because I no longer liked a lot of these keywords. I had planned on renaming several keywords into just one but when I tried this it informed me that it couldn’t do this. It had to rename the same number of keywords, so key word a, keyword b, keyword c, would have to be renamed to new keyword a, new keyword b, new keyword c.

My suggestion is that several keywords can be merged into just one keyword all at the same time. I think theoretically they can now all be merged into one keyword but it would take a lot of renaming keywords and saving to get to that stage and I haven’t been able to check that it works. Merging the keywords into one would save some time

Beta Icon Browser: Organize by Keyword instead of Upload Order

Area:

Summary:
To either have an option to switch between upload order and keyword order (as the normal icon viewer has) or to swap from an upload order to a keyword order.

Description:
I don't think it's really human nature to look for icons by the order in which we uploaded them: we don't remember that. We do remember icons, especially if we categorized them for organization. (Say, by fandom, or by color, or by mood!) I think that keyword order would be a more human-accessible way of organizing icons.

It has been pointed out to me that this would cause some icons to repeat with multiple keywords -- but I think that would be fine, since it wouldn't add to load time, but MIGHT add to user convenience.

I assume that changing the sort method would be fairly simple, so I would be willing to do this myself if there's interest from other users.

let user set icon view order (keyword or upload date) durably

Area:

Summary:
There are two options for sorting icons on the "Manage Icons" and "Icons" pages: by keyword and by upload date/time. Both pages default to upload date. Let the user set a preferred order under Settings.

Description:
On the "Manage Icons" page, http://www.dreamwidth.org/editicons, and the "Icons" page, http://USERID.dreamwidth.org/icons, there are two options for sorting the icons: keyword and upload date. Both default to Upload date. I have little use for upload order, and it's annoying to have to click "Keyword order" every single time I reopen the page, which has been about a dozen times today (while uploading icons from LJ, which provides only upload order; kudos to you for offering a choice!).

Let the user choose Keyword order or Upload order as a durable setting. In fact, it could be useful to have two separate durable order settings, one for each of those pages.

Title:
Customizing the order in which icons appear on the userpics page

Area:
icon management

Summary:
For users who have a lot of icons, or accumulate a lot of icons over time, it would be nice to be able to move our icons up or down the list freely, so that we don't have to worry about what order to upload icons in if we want certain icons next to each other.

Description:
====SUGGESTION====
A way for us to be able to change the order our icons are displayed in after we've already uploaded them.

What I'm envisioning is having two arrows (up and down) next to the icons on the Manage Icons page (to the right of each icon?). When you click the arrows, the icon (and keywords and etc) will move up or down the list, switching places with the icon before or after it. This will help people using 100 and 250 icons to organize their userpics page to their liking without the hassle of deleting icons and reuploading them in the desired order if they have icons they're uploading later that they wish were showing at the top, or after this specific icon, etc...

Currently there's a "Upload Order" display and "Keyword Order" display on the userpics page. It seems like there could be room for a "Custom Order" link? Ideally the custom order would be the default, so if a user decides to use a custom order it would be what shows up to other users when they click the userpics page (in which case you probably don't need "upload order"...).

====WHY IT'S THE BEST SOLUTION?====
Well, mostly it's just that there's no way to do this but the hard way, currently. The description above is just what I imagine would be easiest to deal with from the user end, but honestly I (and I know some other RPers) would probably be pleased with having ANY way to be able to customize icon order right now that doesn't involve deleting/reuploading.

====PROBLEMS/DRAWBACKS====
I'm not sure how easy it'd be to implement a change in UI like that? Especially if we want things moving around when a button is clicked. Would icons have to be renamed where they're stored to change their place on the list? Would it be more strain on the servers to have this as an option? Possibly the arrow method would take too many clicks to move a new icon to the top of the list?

====OTHER WAYS TO IMPLEMENT SUGGESTION====
A) Have a separate Manage Icons page dedicated specifically to changing the order of your icons. So you leave uploading new icons the way it is, and add a new page for moving them around.

OR

B) On the current Manage Icons page, a new text box could be added next to the icons, where you enter in the number for the order you want it to show up, the same way the order of sidebar modules is handled on some of the journal styles. You could change the numbers around to your liking and then when you hit "save" the icons are moved to their new positions.

====LAST WORDS====
So those are the three ideas I've got and I'm sure there are other ways or a combination of the above ways to accomplish the task, but the most important thing to me is having the option to customize what order my icons show up in. Thanks for considering!

Changing icons keywords when crossposting

Area:
icons

Summary:
This suggestion would enable DW users who cross-post to other sites to say that while the icon they picked on DW answers to the keyword "hello", the cross-poster should use the icon answering to "goodbye" on the other site.

Description:
If I've chosen to cross-post to other sites, I would get new fields to go with my icons, one per site (I think), on which I could optionally chose to type keywords corresponding to my icons on each of the other sites.

I'm thinking of this for the people who don't have the same number of icons on every site. Currently, either the keywords match, then I have the right icon, but if they don't, the post appears with my default icon on other sites.

People could either leave the fields empty, retaining the current behavior, or write down correspondences between keywords. Should a keyword not exist anymore on the site, the cross-poster would either fail the cross-post, or reverting to the default icon (preferred behavior I suppose, but I don't know if it's possible) and signal the error to the user.

This could be a paid feature.

If the text entered into these fields is too long, the user should be notified before the text is truncated, advised of the relevant character limit, and presented with their original text to edit.

It would be really awesome if the user could be told how many characters over they were, too.

Title:
Option to use no icon even when default icon is set

Area:
icons, entries, comments

Summary:
One should have the ability to choose "No icon" even when default icon has been set.

Description:
Sometimes no icon, including the default, is appropriate to the situation. And sometimes the situation itself (say, a long line of +1 comments) is better served by having no icons. The icon selector should have a "none" option.

Title:
Exclude Individual Icons from Random Selection

Area:
Randomized icon choice

Summary:
There's a code that will permit a random icon to be selected for posts. For some icons, it may be inappropriate to use them randomly. Excluding these inappropriate icons from random selection, with a checkbox on the icon page, might be useful.

Description:
This code tour ( http://dw-dev.dreamwidth.org/64126.html ) mentions being able to have a post have a random icon with a single click. My first thought was "Cool!" My second thought was, "Wait, it could be confusing if I do that and it picks one of my strongly 'themed' icons, such as '*sigh*' or 'oh dear' or 'sad eyes'... or one of the icons I use only for certain fic universes, when posting fic!"

Therefore, the ability to designate some icons as "deliberate use only" on the Icon Page, while leaving other icons available to be randomly pretty, would make an already-cool option <I>ultra</I>-nifty-keen for me.

Drawbacks:
• Makes the code more complex.
• Adds another checkbox somewhere that people have to think about.
• Requires a decision of whether newly-added icons should be random-pickable by default or if they should start life as deliberate-pick only.
