Sort Icon Page by Active/Inactive Status

Title:
Sort Icon Page by Active/Inactive Status

Area:
icons

Summary:
On the View Icons page (and possibly the Upload Icon page) allow a sort option which will group Active/Inactive icons (preferably Active on the top/first page) together for ease of finding them.

Description:
Since there are already sorting options for Keyword and Upload Order, having this additional sorting option would be beneficial for accounts which have had paid or premium status previously and are expired, etc. particularly now that there are permanent icon slots available which increase the overall capacity of an account's icon slots.

I believe the method dictating which icons are left active go by most-used in journals followed by most recently uploaded? (I could be wrong on this, it's just what I've observed). However these options both leave active icons scattered through the overall icon page(s). Although the icon browser does only load active icons IF the user still has a paid, it doesn't help free accounts who may be trying to search out 15 active icons from 100, 250, or even more.

I'm not foreseeing any immediate problems if this were implemented due to the fact that there are other existing sort options, but if anyone spots something I've missed...?

I'm curious to know what the answer to this question is, myself.

op, main journal.

And if at some point down the road it would be possible to designate 15 "core" icons!

This is so on my wishlist. "Never de-activate this set of icons" would be a killer feature.

Would it be possible to change it (for some) to most used followed by oldest? I prefer to keep my "subject" icons when I lapse (money's tight ATM), and they're ancient, and some haven't been used for ages but are on posts still referred to by people, etc.

(if there's a suggestion somewhere for "let us pick our 15 free" I'll go vote yes straightaway)

There's a bug for "pick which you want to stay active", actually, it just hasn't been finished yet.

I'm a little dubious about the idea of spending precious programming resources on features for people who let their paid accounts lapse. Not that I want to punish those people, but it seems like other features might be more urgent.

Lapsing doesn't necessarily mean that that paid won't ever be renewed though - I have a number of accounts which will go through periods of activity and inactivity, and I'll let them lapse when I know I won't be using them much for a while. But that doesn't mean that I won't decide to renew those accounts in the future, or that I won't want to sparingly use those accounts during the unpaid, 'inactive' periods. Someone else might just not have the money at that point in time, but will renew later on when they do.

Plus, when accounts that used to be paid are harder to manage than accounts that have never been paid at all, that just acts as a disincentive for some people to get paids in the first place. The fact that you can't choose the icons that remain does tie into this as well, but I have known people who'd like to get a paid for just a short time, but they end up not getting it at all because they know that icons would be a hassle afterwards.

It isn't as though it would be the addition of an entirely new feature, though. Part of the reason I suggested it was because the staff have already given us two sorting option: Upload and Keyword orders. This would just be an additional compliment to that.

For example: my main RP journal is a premium paid and has most of the 250 icon slots full. As premium accounts can only be purchased in 6MO increments, sometimes I have to "let" it expire before I have funds to renew it for another six months. But that doesn't mean I'm not still using it or that I wouldn't appreciate being able to more easily see which 15 icons I have to work with without searching through five pages of inactives.

There's something in the [site community profile] dw_suggestions FAQ that talks about prioritising suggestions, and why this comm isn't really about that, but just about whether or not the idea is feasible/good at all. Mostly has to do with a volunteer developer commumnity -- if someone really wants to work on this, even if it's not a priority, and it's the only thing they're really interested in working on, we'll hardly try and force them to work on something else. So if the answer is "sure, as long as anyone cares enough to actually work on it" then you should vote yes. Whereas if it's "no, not even if someone volunteers to work on it" then vote "no".

This feature would also be great for weeding out icons you never really use. Once you get up to 200/300 it can get a bit hard to keep track.

It would be cool to also be able to choose which 15 are active, rather than having them chosen at random and having to delete all of your other icons just to get the 15 you want to be active.

But I'm not sure how the coding would go down with that or if it'd bee too complicated/easy to exploit somehow. So otherwise, grouping them together for now would be really great.
