Changing icons keywords when crossposting

Title:
Changing icons keywords when crossposting

Area:
icons

Summary:
This suggestion would enable DW users who cross-post to other sites to say that while the icon they picked on DW answers to the keyword "hello", the cross-poster should use the icon answering to "goodbye" on the other site.

Description:
If I've chosen to cross-post to other sites, I would get new fields to go with my icons, one per site (I think), on which I could optionally chose to type keywords corresponding to my icons on each of the other sites.

I'm thinking of this for the people who don't have the same number of icons on every site. Currently, either the keywords match, then I have the right icon, but if they don't, the post appears with my default icon on other sites.

People could either leave the fields empty, retaining the current behavior, or write down correspondences between keywords. Should a keyword not exist anymore on the site, the cross-poster would either fail the cross-post, or reverting to the default icon (preferred behavior I suppose, but I don't know if it's possible) and signal the error to the user.

This could be a paid feature.

I can see the use for this, but I can also see where the extra fields would be annoying to people who crosspost but don't have this issue, so I think this should be something to opt in to with their other crossposting settings.

It's also something that I could see being different for each unique crosspost site -- say you had 30 icons on LJ and 5 different icons on IJ.

Considering that the new update page at /entry/new can collapse sections, I second this.

I'd take that, or else something I could collapse on my update page.

*nod* It definitely makes more sense to me to map the icon keywords on the manage icons page than to have all that cluttering up the update page.

Can't you work around this by setting multiple keywords per icon? E.g. if you set your icon on the other site to have both "hello" and "goodbye" as keywords, it would get used for either.

So for example, if you have icons for "fandom a: character 1" and "fandom a: character 2" on this side, but only have "fandom a" on the other site, because you have fewer icon slots there, change the keywords over there to "fandom a, fandom a: character 1, fandom a: character 2" and you'll still get appropriate icons instead of the default.

There's a character limit on keywords, though. Example: I sort my icons into categories, and often use song lyrics or quotes as keywords because otherwise I'd forget what each icon represents, and I couldn't fit two of those into one icon's keywords.

I believe there's also a 5-keyword limit, so if you wanted the same icon to map to more than that number of distinct DW icons, you would be out of luck.

I wouldn't use this feature, but would not mind it existing, as long as it didn't result in a lot of extra input fields showing up on the update page. (So maybe if it were opt-in, as instantramen suggested.)

I would love to see this feature. Personally, I would like to see the dialogue box in the are where I am making the post.
