do not silently truncate text fields when uploading or editing icons

Title:
do not silently truncate text fields when uploading or editing icons

Area:
profile

Summary:
When uploading or editing icons, if the text entered into the keyword, comment, or description field is too long, it is silently truncated despite the "success" message. As a result, the text attached to icons of wordy users with no memory for, or sense of, the character limits on these fields may be incomplete or incomprehensible.

Description:
If the text entered into these fields is too long, the user should be notified before the text is truncated, advised of the relevant character limit, and presented with their original text to edit.

It would be really awesome if the user could be told how many characters over they were, too.

Implementing this as-is would be good, and probably sufficient.

But ideal would be implementing it so that it alerts you as you are typing to how many characters remain, as some other sites such as Twitter do.

Occasionally Twitter's counting thing fails mightily when I'm using it (if my 'net is slow, my typing speed causes the thing to crash and burn in horrific fashion when it attempts to keep up), but by and large I like the way the character count works on that.

Why not have it just stop letting you type when you reach the maximum character limit?

I would think that would be simpler, and am plus one-ing this as my "with changes". But would be fine with either this or the suggested implementation, so long as it did stop silently truncating!

I think that would be fine, so long as it also told you somehow, because some people might not notice that their typing wasn't going in.

...because people who don't type well enough to watch the screen instead of their fingers have entirely failed to notice that the field stopped accepting char long before they stopped typing...

Better to add a character count and prevent people from typing more than the allowed number of characters.
