Upload icons without seeing full list

Title:
Upload icons without seeing full list

Area:
icons

Summary:
Split out the upload icon tool from the edit icons page

Description:
At the moment, when you go to upload a new icon, it has to load all your existing icons first. This is particularly difficult if you have lots of icons and a slow connection. It would be better if there was a page where you could upload new icons, and the page for editing existing icons was separate. This would also make it easier to improve both pages' usability in the future. If we wanted to get really clever, we could paginate the edit icons page the same way we've done with the view icons page, or only split it for people who have more than 100 icons. But any kind of split would do the job of letting me upload one icon without waiting for ages.

I must say the current system works pretty well for me because I have few icons but I'm probably in the minority on this. :) What would really bother me if the two pages were separated is that I could no longer 1) check my existing keywords (unless we make the upload form smarter than it is ala tag browser) and 2) c/p comments from existing icons when I upload new ones.

So +1 or even +100 to limiting the number of icons displayed there by default and implementing pagination but -1 to separating the two pages.

I have a LOT of icons, and I agree with you. I do not want to see this made into 2 separate pages. I often swap out icons but keep identical keywords, so I need to be able to see the existing keywords to make sure I get it right.

As far a limiting the number of icons, I'd rather see that as an option (clickable), like it currently is on the icon display page. That would cut down on the time it takes for the page to load.

Yeah, me too. Separating the two things would make uploading new icons much more difficult and timeconsuming for me. And I want to see all icons all the time :-)

Why not leave the ability to upload an icon from the edit icons page (where it creates little additional overhead), but add a "quick upload icon" page that only has that feature? That is, when editing your icons you may upload; but provide a way to upload without having to view/edit?

Or, heck, add a "view existing icons/keywords" AJAXy thing to the "upload a new icon" page - so that at least the user controls whether it loads them. Heck, if we wanted to, make one option that shows the keywords and descriptions and comments *without* the images, and one with. People with low bandwidth could view keywords, descriptions, and comments to remember what they had without the bandwidth hit....

Just musing here.

I like the idea of a "quick upload icon" under the "Create" menu, which is my "with changes."

I too hate that all my icons load when I just want to add one new one, and I've only got 60-odd! A quick upload feature would solve that nicely.

Like you, I have few icons, but I want the uploading-as-a-separate-activity functionality, too. If I'm uploading a new icon or icons then those are the only ones I'm worried about keywording, commenting, or describing, etc. If I want to edit or delete already-existing info for my other icons then there should be a link I can click from our new upload page to get to that (which could either work like our cut tags currently do, by expanding the rest of the page to show the until-now hidden icons and related contextual info, or else it could just work like a link and take you to another page for that). But like the OP, I know what it's like to crawl around online with dial-up-like wifi speeds and wait and wait and wait; part of accessibility/usability, two features this site is definitely keen on, should be "not waiting".

I put down Shouldn't be implemented because I'd only want it to be optional. I prefer having them on the same page. Even with the extra loading time it is far more convenient for me.
