Adding Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man to profile

Title:
Adding Jersey, Guernsey, and Isle of Man to profile

Area:
profile

Summary:
Adding the Crown Dependencies of the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey) and Isle of Man to the location drop down on the profile.

Description:
I'm sure that users from these places can easily select the UK as their location, but I suspect that they might like the option of their specific island as well. If nothing else, I doubt having the option would be detrimental.

South Sudan needs adding too.

But for the consideration of the DW site team:

I actually saw that there was already discussion of using the ISO 3166 country list as a source in bug 534, which I think might be a good idea.

However, the Pinboard web dev types were all excited a few weeks ago over this open source JQuery plugin to change how these lists function by augmenting the autocomplete. Which is seriously cool UX. You can customize the linkages that the list makes yourself and it degrades to the ordinary list in IE-old. It can also be adapted to any drop down autocomplete you already have.

Ooh, pretty. Makes me want to make a website that needs a dropdown menu and also learn jQuery just so I can use this.

For what it's worth, I just tested it for accessibility. With JavaScript off, it worked just fine, although for some reason the lift didn't auto expand on selection. With JavaScript on accessing by voice (keyboard emulation), it was a little bit weird. Mouseless browsing showed it as a selectable field, but couldn't actually access the text box. However, I could, with some trial and error, tab into the field. Once I was there it worked as advertised.

I think it's cool -- long country lists are in enormous pain without a mouse -- but we would want to play with it to improve the accessibility if we were going to implement it. (Which I think is totally achievable; I suspect it's a minor issue.)

Interesting, thanks for trying it out.

I think improving tab access was part of the point of the plugin, as per the article, but I'm no expert on that sort of thing, I've only ever done the most minor testing with tab browsing for some feedback to the AO3.

There may be improvements already on github, I have no idea how to read that sort of thing.

I admit I was mesmerized by the fact that typing Su in the box gets you Finland as second choice and De gets you Germany as first.

plus, y'know, the CI and IOM aren't actually part of the UK anyway!

Heck. I'd like the option of 'England' even though the country's technically the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

And I daresay the Scots, Welsh and Irish would like to be able to select Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

*sighs*
