Include 'from' on comment preview

Area:
comments, identities

Summary:
Comment preview should display who you are making the comment as, in addition to subject and text.

Description:
When I post a comment with a secondary journal while logged in as me, then hit preview, the preview screen doesn't include the information about what account will be posting the comment. I think it definitely should -- I often post in contexts where I double-check multiple times to make sure I'm using the right name, because it would be bad/identity-crossing if I don't. Having this on preview will be useful, and might remind users to change identities if they should, but have forgotten.

Will also be useful someday when there's a multiple accounts system.

Title:
Adding Feeds

Area:
feeds

Summary:
Option for adding feeds inside the manage circle page. Alternatively add a separate "manage feeds" entry on the organize tab.

Description:
This is related to http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/87376.html

Every time I decide to add a feed to my reading list I seem to fumble around a lot before I can remember how it is done. My intuitive response has always been:
1. Click on "Manage circle". From there I can add people/communities, and I can also modify my relationships to them. I can also unsubscribe from feeds, but I cannot add them. That seems incongruous.
2. Go to the home page and click on the "organize" tab, where all the other "manage" options reside.
For me "read->feeds" would probably mean the page where I get to read the feeds I subscribe to.

Thus my suggestion is to add the option for adding feeds to the manage circle page. Alternatively, add a separate "manage feeds" entry on the organize tab.

Profile module: match text links with icon links

Area:
styles

Summary:
In the Profile sidebar module of official styles, you can choose to display the interaction links (subscribe, track, post, search, etc.) as icons or text. Some icon links and their alt text are more precise than text, which makes text links less useful in my opinion. I wish they matched.

Description:
For example, there's a 'join community' icon and a 'leave community' icon with corresponding alt text. If you switch to text you get 'Membership' in both cases. It would be nice if the text could change according to the viewer's status like it does for icons.

[If you're using an official style and want to see what I mean for yourself, you can switch to text at http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options. It's the option called 'Select whether user interaction links are printed as text or using the available icons '.]

From the comments in http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/580262.html?thread=3534502#cmt3534502

Diigo is a social bookmarking site that has increased in popularity after the sale of Delicious.

The user library (main page) is located at: http://www.diigo.com/user/[name]
The user profile is located at: http://www.diigo.com/profile/[name]

Display "Default" instead of "All" on navstrip when viewing default reading page

Area:
navstrip/reading filters

Summary:
Currently, when I view my Reading Page, it defaults to my Default setting - but tells me I'm viewing All Subscriptions on the navstrip. I suggest that it instead tells me I'm viewing Default.

Description:
I have a subscription filter named "Default" (which, by the way, is one of most awesome things ever). When I click to view my Reading Page, it all functions as advertised and displays only things in my Default group - but the navstrip at the top of the page informs me that I'm reading "All Subscriptions". Untrue! And often confusing when I think about reading the people who aren't on my default list - because it's displaying All at the top, I ... think I'm reading everybody. However, if I click the "view" button next to where it says "All Subscriptions", it does indeed refresh to show me all of my subscriptions (adds "?filter=0" to the url). The dropdown box then continues to advertise that I am viewing All Subscriptions. However, if I were to view a filter called "random", the url would change to ".../read/random" AND, more importantly, the dropdown box would show the filter's name, "random". The only time that it doesn't show me the filter I'm viewing in the box is when I click directly to my reading page.

Changing this so the text matches up seems like it would save people a lot of confusion, and I can't see any particular drawbacks, though I don't know the slightest thing about what sort of effort it would take to implement it. Always worth a thought, though?

Make comment expansion a free feature

Area:
comments, paid features

Summary:
Right now the ability to expand comment threads is a paid-only feature, and I think it would be conducive to the public use of Dreamwidth to allow all users to have it.

Description:
Forum-esque discussion threads, from kink memes to love memes to ONTD, are the type of community activity that promotes growth as a social platform, and as such should be facilitated by the journal default. I think the lack of free comment expansion, minor though it is, has made people reluctant to move their communities here from other platforms, and without active communities Dreamwidth can never really compete with the problematic-but-familiar platforms where the majority of fandom currently resides.

This feature alone is unlikely to significantly impact paid time revenue one way or the other, but because it's taken for granted on sites like Livejournal, its absence on Dreamwidth serves to put off those migrating (even in these times of trial-by-DDoS). Making expandable comments the default would allow the sort of long, rambly discussion threads that turn bunches of people into cohesive communities.

Allow the use of Markdown to format entries in addition to RTF and HTML.

Description:
While it has been previously suggested in http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/390894.html?view=3345134 that DW offer a text-based alternative to marking up entries, that suggestion focused on wiki-style markup, and the objections raised (yet another markup to learn, already have RTF, some incompatibilities) are not the same when using Markdown. Markdown is designed to be highly intuitive to pretty much everyone who has used e-mail or irc for past umpteen years. And for those who haven't, there would still be HTML and RTF available.

Markdown is at http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/ . What markdown does is convert the marked up text into HTML.

Markdown co-exists with HTML already, it would likely not have a problem dealing with DW tags in text (i.e., it would leave them alone).

Ability to leave/join communities on Manage Circle page

Summary:
In addition to subscribing/unsubscribing, add the option to leave/join communities on http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/circle/edit

Description:
On http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/circle/edit , there is a Communities section. You can do the ticky/unticky thing there to subscribe or unsubscribe to a community. However, when it comes to membership, you can only see your current status there, not change it. Let's please add that.

How this suggestion came to be: I was going through the communities and actually used the hover menu to leave and unsubscribe from communities because half of that isn't possible on the page. And then I accidentally saved the page. So now for all the communities I had planned to leave and unsubscribed, I had now left the community, but been re-subscribed, as the checkbox was marked when submitting the page. Had I been able to do everything via the Manage Circle page, I could have spared myself that.

Description:
So here's what happened: I tried to create a feed which already existed except I didn't know that and because the URL I entered was a bit different the feed wasn't recognized as a duplicate. That account name is already in use.

user tag should acknowledge ao3.org

Area:
site-specific markup

Summary:
The username tag allows you to specify archiveofourown.org and displays the appropriate usericon. However, it doesn't recognise the alias of ao3.org and displays it with the standard unrecognised usericon. The code should be updated so it is.

Description:
The username tag should recognise the alias ao3.org as belonging to archiveofourown.org and either link the usericon and username to the ao3.org version of the URLs or to the archiveofourown.org version. Which one doesn't matter from a technical standpoint as they both work (ao3.org URLs redirect to their archiveofourown.org counterparts) and might be discussed or might be a matter of general policy.

This would be convenient when linking to users on archiveofourown.org as that is a long URL and annoying to remember when nearly everyone calls the site AO3 anyway.

I honestly don't see any drawbacks to this. I don't see how it would interfere with anyone's current use or expected behaviour of the tag and it's not even adding a site that the site markeup does not already recognise, just adding an alias. It would be a nice convenience for the users who would use it, without introducing much in the way of cruft or new architecture or software design.
