Title:
Today's birthdays on the birthday list

Area:
Birthdays

Summary:
On dreamwidth.org and the birthday list ( http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays ) , birthdays that are today are not shown (dreamwidth.org) or are shown at the bottom of the list for next year (birthday list).

Description:
The birthday list on dreamwidth.org and http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays function as "upcoming birthdays"; birthdays that are today are not displayed at all (dreamwidth.org), or are displayed at the bottom (http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays).

People whose birthdays are today should be shown at the top of the list for this year's birthday, not at the bottom of the list for next year's birthday.

Title:
Don't Tell Me My Own Birthday

Area:
site: notifications, site: birthdays

Summary:
DW probably shouldn't remind me that my own birthday is coming up.

Description:
My suggestion: Don't tell me my own birthday's coming up.

Discussion and rationale: One of the features I like is that about 2 days beforehand, I get a reminder in my DW Inbox or my real email, depending on how I configured my notification preferences, about the upcoming birthday(s) for anyone on my Reading List who put/kept that information in their profile and didn't mark it as private. I find that this is useful; I can then get a last minute gift or send a "Congrats on surviving another year on this mudball" email or whatever. It is less useful to get the reminder for my own birthday, since (a) I already know when that's coming up, (b) I'm unlikely to need the reminder to get myself a gift or send myself a card, and (c) I find that most people know their own birthday and that as we get older we tend to want the reminder less and less.

Drawbacks: Some people might want the reminder for themselves. "Oh yeah, my birthday's in 2 days, I should make dinner reservations" or "...I should try to find where my SO is hiding my presents" may have some utility for people.

Suggested priority: Low.

Birthday notifications on the day of

Area:
notifications

Summary:
You could choose to have birthday notifications the day of in addition to, or instead of, two days before.

Description:
Under the Notifications section in My Account Settings where it says "One of the people on my access or subscription lists has an upcoming birthday", have a sub-section appear when someone checks that box which has the option of getting a notification two days before, the day of or both.

Title:
Don't announce upcoming birthdays for deleted journals

Area:
notifications, birthdays

Summary:
Don't send out notificants for birthdays of deleted journals. Also don't show these journals in the birthday lists.

Description:
In the same vein as http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/277740.html , I would like the same for deleted journals. I know I could just delete them from my circle, but I like the reminder on my profile page. I don't see the point in seeing their birthdays on my logged-in homepage.

Others might, of course.

Title:
Don't announce upcoming birthdays for memorial journals

Area:
notifications, birthdays,

Summary:
We should not send out birthday notifications for users who have passed away. We should not also show these in the list of upcoming birthdays in the logged-in homepage, or on the full birthdays list (http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays).

Description:
A memorial journal is a special status applied by site administrators to a journal, if informed that the owner has passed away. It preserves the journal in its current state (no new entries or comments), leaving it up for friends who might wish to revisit it at any time.

As far as I can tell (I've checked the code and I haven't seen anything that says we guard against this case) we send out birthday notifications even for memorial journals. This may come as an unpleasant and unavoidable annual surprise for friends of that person.

We should not announce the upcoming birthday, so we need to hide it in these places:
* email/inbox notifications
* birthdays list on the logged-in homepage
* full birthdays list (http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays)
* ...(any that I've missed?)

The birthday would still be displayed on the profile page, respecting any current privacy settings, so that the information would still be available for those who seek it out.

Title:
Export birthdays in iCalendar format

Area:
Birthdays, interoperability

Summary:
We should be able to get an iCalendar formatted version of our circle's birthdays.

Description:
The birthdays page (http://www.dreamwidth.org/birthdays) is neat, but not terribly useful. It would be nice if the same data were also made available in iCalendar format so that it could then be exported to Google Calendar, Sunbird, iCal, Outlook, etc. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_applications_with_iCalendar_support)

Title:
Order of birthdays on logged-in homepage

Area:
logged-in homepage

Summary:
The birthdays on the logged-in homepage seem to currently be displaying with the soonest on bottom and the latest on top. I suggest having the soonest on top.

Description:
...And this feels so minor for a suggestion, but hey.

I looked at the list of birthdays, and said "ah, none until September," and then realized there was an August birthday below that. I think it would make much more sense to have them with the one that happens first on top. That way it is easier to notice and understand.
