I wonder how this should handle time zones issues.

This week, instead of just today?

ugh, yes. I'm sure there would be time zone shenanigans. But, does it really matter if it's a few hours out?

a 12-hour window on both sides of GMT should do it!

I like this idea, but I personally think it should be framed in terms of UTC, since that's the standard Network Time Protocol conforms to, and strictly speaking, to be fully inclusive worldwide, "today" for birthdays should run from UTC+14 through UTC-12. (Yes, the International Date Line really does make things that screwy in the middle of the Pacific!)

Basically, I'd rather see the date in question show up early and stay late, because thanks to the internet, I have friends from New Zealand to Hawaii.

UTC is the more modern name for GMT, so you're talking the same thing...

But I suspect you knew that. :D

UTC is based on GMT and is highly similar to it, but as they say, the devil's in the details. Not that any of those details will actually be relevant to anything as imprecise as this particular usage — but it's the principle of the thing! NTP forever! ;>
