Title:
Add Plurk to Other Sites in Profile

Area:
Profiles

Summary:
Currently you can add many social networking sites to your profile. Add Plurk to the Other Sites area in profiles so people can include Plurk in their contact information.

Description:
Difficulty: Easy

Why? Plurk is widely used social networking site for fast paced messaging, similar to Twitter, but much more organized. It's especially prominent in roleplay communities or just as an easy way to stay in touch. It would be great to include that information right on a profile with the same privacy settings we already use for things like Etsy, Last.fm, or Twitter especially since we've already handled offsite linking with plurk for the user name tag.

Title:
Add custom option for Image Placeholder size

Area:
display settings

Summary:
Add one more option to the Image Placeholder setting at http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display to allow defining a custom size.

Description:
There are currently four options for the Image Placeholder setting. You can set it to use placeholders always, never, for medium images (320x240 pixels) and up, or for "large" images (640x480) and up.

I have never used this setting because 640x480 doesn't seem all that large to me and I'm fine with a bit larger than that too. However a recent suggestion requesting 800x800 items [http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/1285370.html] reminded me that I do have my limits, and brought the tool back to my attention. I would like to add one more option to customize separately the largest height and width of the images we're willing to load.

Everybody's screen size and shape is different, we all prefer different sizes and shapes for our browser windows, and we all have different tolerances for the size of what we want to see. I would like to be able to use placeholders at a larger size, but I think adding a custom option would be better than simply increasing the threshold to an arbitrary size. A custom option would be more flexible, not merely allowing users to specify a larger threshold, but also allowing those whose screens/windows are more portrait-shaped than landscape to allow taller but limit wider images to fit better.

That all being said, even if having a custom option to specify the height and width separately is not feasible (I have no idea how this tool actually works), I'd still like to have one more larger option for using placeholders.

With community importing on the way, the ability to search communities by poster should be extended to work for OpenID accounts as well.

Description:
Currently, you can search communities by poster with the URL format http://foo.dreamwidth.org?poster=bar (so, for example, http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org?poster=denise). This doesn't work for OpenID accounts, as I found when testing it out in scans_daily, one of the few communities that has already had entries imported. The URL format http://foo.dreamwidth.org?poster=bar.livejournal.com (or .insanejournal.com, etc.) should also work for searching communities.

List memory tag on jump page after adding a memory

Area:

Summary:
After I add something to my memories, I frequently want to go look at all the things I have memoried under the tag I just used. It would be helpful if that link were on the jump page.

Description:
After adding a post to your memories you are taken to a page with the following options:
Go back to the entry
View all your memorable entries
Go to your Reading Page
Continue reading [the journal you just memoried a post from]

Frequently what I want to do next is go to the section of my memories that uses the tag I just added the entry under, and I would like to be able to do that directly instead of having to click to all memories, scroll down to that tag in the list, and then click it again. One of the most common things I do with my memories is add posts to them that I might want to include in a newsletter I work for, and that's especially when this would come in handy for me. Also, honestly, having the same option to go back to the specific memories section after deleting an entry from my memories would be useful for me, too. Then when I was deleting things I had already added to the newsletter or had decided not to use I wouldn't necessarily have to open all of them in separate tabs. But that is less of a hardship.

make a more direct link to support request from feed profile page

Area:
support

Summary:
Somebody who is requesting a changed URL for a feed doesn't need to read the FAQs for support, they need to go directly to the link for making a support request.

Description:
On the profile page for a feed account, we have the text "If this feed has stopped updating because its location has changed, please contact Support to have the location updated instead of creating a new feed." "Support," in this case is a link to the support portal (http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/), which rightfully starts with all of the FAQs, Known Issues, etc., and has "make a support request" way down on the bottom.

However, somebody who clicks on the link "please contact support to have the location updated" doesn't need to read all the FAQs; they just need to contact support. It should take them directly to the form.

In fact, ideally, it should take them to a pre-populated version of the form, which says something like "the URL for the syndicated feed sample_feed has been changed. Please paste the new URL below."

(And if we do all that, then the linked part of the above text shouldn't just be the word "support" but the more informative link text "contact support to have the location updated". That's just a change of where the [/a] those.)

Description:
When there's a deleted user, people who have turned on the contextual hover menu (that thing that flaps open when you hover over the userpic/userhead) currently see a notice that the user is deleted.

To make user experience a little more consistent, and to make stuff more useful, that notice could be modified to include useful information about a deleted account.

It should show the deletion reason if one has been given.

Make choosing random icon a button

Summary:
Convert text into a button instead, to avoid confusion.

Description:
To use the nifty "Use Random Icon" feature, you click the text "Use Random Icon". This is good, except that right next to the text is a button called "Quote". Inevitably my mind will think that the button refers to the text (that is, "Use Random Icon": [randomiconbutton]), instead of what it really is: two separate commands. I end up clicking the button, even though it says "Quote", simply because of this; oftentimes, the comment page is styled differently, and clues such as underlined-and-in-blue-colour text aren't present. I suggest we make both of them buttons, if possible, to reduce confusion.

I'm not sure about drawbacks, having no idea of comment coding. Text too long for a button? Interfering with the text in comment?

"Currently working as" on every "work as" page

Area:
community administration, ui, making things make sense

Summary:
Show a "currently working as: [community or user]" on every page that allows you to manage multiple journals. This would likely be a series of quick fixes or perhaps suitable for some beginning developers, although it might be replaced down the line if the current settings pages are overhauled.

Description:
Currently, when you load a page like http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/tags you get a list of communities you can manage (if you administrate any) as well as your own journal, but you have to remember to click the "Switch" button to make it happen. I have more than once made changes for the wrong place and then been frustrated because I forgot to click that button (and I would consider myself a power user).

Also, if you're done working with your community and you want to go back there to see how it looks, sometimes there isn't a quick link.

Adding a "currently working as" notice would serve as a notice that maybe you need to click the button, a reassurance that you really are working on the right community, and a link to go back and check things out. It would probably save a lot of time and just look nicer.

Wording fix when creating a feed

Area:
Feed creation

Summary:
Wording on the "subscribe to this feed you've just created?" page refers to a checkbox that doesn't exist; let's change the wording.

Description:
When one creates a feed, the "subscribe?" page has this text:

[checkbox] Subscribe: display the entries to which you have access on your reading page.

Optional: Include in one or more subscription filters. You must subscribe to the user by selecting the _second_ box above in order to add them to any subscription filters. (emphasis mine)

But there is no second box, there's only the one box. I think this wording is carried over from the "add someone to your Circle" page, where it makes sense (there's a "grant access" box and a "subscribe" box, unlike here where there's just a "subscribe") box. Let's change the wording here so it makes sense in context.

Area:

Summary:
The email notification you receive when someone invites you to join a comm should have an option in it that allows you to join it. It should also contain a short, optional message if it doesn't already.

Description:
A friend sent me an invite to join an RP comm we were discussing on XMPP, and I looked all over the email for a link to accept the invitation but I didn't see one! There was an option to subscribe, but not to join.

Maybe this was because it didn't have open membership? The link "Manage your invitations" took me to a page where I could click "Accept," but it was kind of confusing and involved radio buttons and things. I actually first clicked "Subscribe to [this community]," then ended up clicking "Join" from there and submitting a request that way instead of accepting the invite.

The workflow should be that I can click on "Accept" from the email, and ideally would have some of the information I'd need to make that decision too. Like a quick note that says "Hey, we'd like you to join our RP comm!" if there isn't an option to send one alone with the invite already. Then once I click Accept, I'm a part of the comm without needing approval, and am taken to a page where I can choose to subscribe to it also.

Title:
Keywords are not listed separately for styling the icons page in S2

Area:
styles

Summary:
In the S2 code for the IconsPage, there is an array of icons which contains the user's icons (as Icon objects) listed in the order specified. Each Icon object has an array containing the icon's keywords. When the IconsPage's sort order is the order in which the icons were uploaded, each Icon object has exactly one element in that array no matter how many keywords the icon has, and that one element contains all of the icon's keywords concatenated together.

Instead of this, the array should have one element per keyword, with each element containing one keyword.

Description:
The IconsPage styling was implemented last year (http://dw-styles.dreamwidth.org/18631.html) but it hasn't been used much; all of the system styles are still using the old icons page.

Here is the code from the core2 which concerns itself with the icon keywords:

    if ($.keywords) {
        """<div class="keywords">""";
        var int keyword_count = 0;
        print safe "<span class='label'>$*text_icons_keywords</span> ";
        """<ul>""";
        foreach var string kw ($.keywords) {
            $keyword_count++;
            """<li>""";
            print safe $kw;
            if ($keyword_count < size $.keywords) { print $*text_icons_keyword_sep; }
            """</li>""";
        }
        """</ul></div>""";
    }

This, to me, pretty strongly implies that the keywords array was intended at some point to hold multiple elements which should be looped through in order to display each keyword separately. There's a string to hold the separator between the elements and everything! I would like it to hold each keyword in a separate element here, when the icons have multiple keywords to be displayed; I think it makes a lot more sense than forcing a comma concatenation in a one-element array.

(Side note: when the sort order is by keyword, the icons appear multiple times in the $.icons array, each time with just the applicable keyword in their $.keywords array, which seems fine to me. I am not suggesting changing the behavior for the keyword-sorted icons.)

I'm not sure what the best way to balance the need to be able to easily clear a poll entry, and the need to see one's answers in the poll, would be, but I am confident that dw_suggestions will have ideas.
