Title:
Misleading link

Area:
invite codes

Summary:
The "See all my invite codes" link doesn't actually lead to the page showing you your full invite codes list - or at least, not the correct full URL.

Description:
On the Invite Someone page [http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/circle/invite] it says:

==
You currently have 8 unused invite codes available. The first five are displayed here. For the full list, or to get multiple codes at once, see your (a link to:)complete list of invite codes. You can choose to be notified when someone you invite creates a journal.

==

This link, however, leads you to [http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes], which is your unused/recently sent codes. To get to the full list is linked here instead, and the page is [http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes?full=1].

Very small change, but things should do what they say they do.

Title:
Vanity promo (invite) code

Area:
invitations, paid features

Summary:
Pay a small but reasonable fee to automatically create a custom promo code, suitable for printing on business cards and the like. (Regular promo codes would still be available for free at site admins' discretion, by filing a support request in the Account Payments category.)

Description:
Site administrators can already generate promo codes, which can be given to people needing bulk invitations (migrating an entire community, attending a conference, in response to Greater Internet Events). Promo codes are currently issued for free, at site administrators' discretion; individual extra invitations are also issued for free at site administrators' discretion. Promo codes can be preloaded with paid time, and to avoid abuse, are not bottomless, and can also be cut off if it becomes apparent they are being misused.

There are more situations that could be suited to promo codes than there is necessarily staff availability to grant and oversee them.

Perhaps you'd like to hand out cards to friends and new contacts, and would like to invite at least some of them to Dreamwidth. Printing up individual invitation codes is not only tedious, but runs the chance that someone wouldn't use the code you gave them, and then you'd have to make the call to either leave it unused or re-issue the code (and then if the person you gave it to was saving it until they had the spare time and motivation, they're out of luck).

Perhaps you want to migrate the users from that community *now*, and you know that staff are on vacation until a little too late to help you.

Users would be able to spend points to create a custom promo code without needing site admin intervention. This would require a promo code control interface visible to the user, while not limiting site administrators' ability to monitor the activity of user-controlled promo codes to prevent abuse and anticipate site growth.

How many points per invite? There would need to be a reasonable minimum limit needed to create the promo code, and a reasonable maximum number of invitations the promo code may hold at one time. (For development, the price per invite, the minimum, and the maximum should probably be set as a cap, so it may be modified on the back end on other installations. On other sites, site administrators could set the points-per-invite cap at 0 for all users or certain users if they wanted those users to be able to invite their friends freely but without completely open registration.)

Should users be able to withdraw unused invitations that they'd spent points on (decreasing the number available in the promo code), and get points back?

Limiting the number of invites that may be held in a promo code at one time would limit the possible damage if a spammer got their hands on someone's promo code, or if a spammer bought an account and created a promo code.

If spammers did get into a legitimate user's promo code, could the points spent to create the codes be refunded to the user upon the destruction of the spammers' journals? In case of a spammer purchasing a promo code, nuke from orbit.

Users should be able to set their own promo code within certain reasonable restrictions (must be at least a certain number of characters, not more than another certain number of characters); it might be a good idea to allow users to automatically generate a promo code in case they aren't feeling particularly clever about creating one, and/or don't want to claim good namespace.

Users should be able to load invite codes they received (assigned to their account? what about assigned to other accounts under control? If that, then what's to stop someone from wandering about and snagging up other codes people have publicly posted?) into their promo code, and should be able to generate individual invite codes out of the pool in their promo code.

Promo codes could be loaded with initial paid time for the new journals (first month, perhaps) if the user setting it up wants to shell out for that.

There should be notifications that could be subscribed to for various activity -- codes getting low, new account creation, possibly more.

The purchase page should have a link to create a support request in the Account Payments category, and a note explaining that promo codes are also available for free upon request, something like: "Invite codes and promotional codes for group invites, can often be obtained for free by opening a request in the Accounts category and speaking with an administrator about the specific situation. Free invite and promo codes are distributed generously but with respect to keeping current site growth controlled and sustainable."

Advantages:

* Fun
* Revenue for the site
* Automatic - no need to ask for something
* Immediate - no need to wait for an administrator to check the requests and grant more codes/a promo code
* Feature that daughter sites might be able to use

Possible disadvantages:

* Shameless moneygrubbing.
* Could discourage people from asking for free promo codes
* Supposing a spammer got in there, eww

Make order on invite code list make sense

Area:
Invite codes frontend

Summary:
The order on http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes?full=1 is not optimal - make it so.

Description:
http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes?full=1 seems to have three tiers of order:

1. the unused codes
2. the used codes, ordered by date the person joined ascending
3. the used codes that were sent to someone via e-mail, ordered by date the person joined ascending

I suggest joining 2 and 3.

Title:
Memo field on Manage Invite Codes

Area:
invite codes

Summary:
Add a memo column to the list of invite codes, to note when you've done something with a code other than use it or send it by email

Description:
The Invite Someone page tells me I have a certain number of unused invite codes, and shows me the first (oldest, I think) 5. But some of them (probably including those 5) have been offered (by means other than email) to someone, who hasn't used them yet, but they might. I can click through to a longer list, which shows me when and where I've sent those codes that I sent by email but which haven't been used yet. I would like to be able to add a note to those that weren't emailed, e.g. "Sent in a PM to $USER" or "posted on dw-codesharing", with a date if there's room. Then the Invite Someone page could display codes that don't have notes in preference to those that do, or display the note.

This would reduce the work involved in making sure that I don't offer someone codes that have been offered to someone else already. There's a workaround, which is to email each code to $MY-E-ADDRESS+$NOTE, but that's a bit fiddly and not everyone knows how to do it or has an email that can handle it.

The only problem I can think of is fitting the extra column onto the page. The list on the Invite Someone page has space to the right; on the longer list, perhaps it could go in the email address column because there wouldn't be both.

Summary:
On http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes?full=1, you can see when your invite codes were used. They're more or less sorted chronologically (by year definitely for me; by month, day and time only approximately). I'd like them to be fully sorted chronologically.

Description:
I'm sure some people would like to be able to sort them by other criteria such as 'recipient' and 'sent on' so it might be best to do all the cats at once.

Title:
Invite Code Automated Messages

Area:
invite codes, accounts

Summary:
Re: http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes
This suggestion has two parts:
1) A textarea that populates the code to share the complete of available codes on the page in the following format with 'Use this code' linking as it does on the invite page:
CAJ792MAXNHZRAAAFXXX Use this code

2) When you copy and paste that code on the site, Dreamwidth should be able to check if the code is used, and disable, gray out, or strike through the link if the code is used.

Description:
Many users have extra invite codes to share. When they do, they either manually copy the list of codes, or copy the available codes from http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes this page and paste it into the RTE. This two step process would not only speed up sharing codes, but also automate the process of displaying if a code has been used or not. It would make it easy to see what codes are available when people post to dw_codesharing. I'm not sure how difficult the backend would be on this as far as part 2 is concerned.

This suggestion has two parts:

PART 1) A textarea that populates the html to share the complete of available codes on the page in the following format with 'Use this code' linking as it does on the invite page:
CAJ792MAXNHZRAAAFXXX Use this code

PART 2) When you copy and paste that code on the site, Dreamwidth should be able to check if the code is used, and should disable, gray out, add a 'code used' indicator, or strike through the link if the code is used.

I don't see any downsides to this sort of feature. In the future, perhaps a suggestion to add a "add a code" button to the RTE (which provides checkboxes to share codes) could be added for those unfamiliar with HTML, and the same behavior applied to the code once posted.

Summary:
On the invite codes page, change "Sent on" to be "Sent on/Used on" and include the date used for codes used directly, not sent by email.

Description:
On the manage invite codes page, if you sent an invite code by email, it shows date sent as well as the email address. If you give a code to someone and they use it directly, not by email, then it doesn't show a date at all. It would be useful to see a date used, so those codes sort properly into the timeline.

Link to dw_codesharing on the "create account" site missing

Area:
invite codes, account creation, commenting

Summary:
Add link to dw_codesharing on the "create account" site and explain why invite codes are used.

Description:
People who are not logged in but want to leave a comment are given the option to *create a dw account now* if they don't have one. However, the link provided only tells people that they have to purchase a account if they don't have an invite code, but no more information is given as to where they can get an invite code.

Suggestion: Add a link to dw_codesharing on the "create website" (https://www.dreamwidth.org/create), and also explain why invite codes are used in the first place (or link to this information).

Drawbacks: None. I think people are more willing to go look for an invite code if they know *where* to look and *why* it is necessary.

Suggestion to Add a Notification Link to the Invite Codes page

Area:
Invitation Code page

Summary:
I'd like to see either a link to Notifications or a checkbox to enable notification on the Invite Someone page itself.

Description:
I posted some invited codes on dw_codesharing, and only later realized that they'd been used, but I hadn't gotten a notification (for some reason, I assumed the default was to let me know when a code had been used) So I looked around, and while the toggle to have said notifications enabled/emailed to me was in the likely-sounding "Notifications" under "Manage Account," I did have to poke around, twice, actually, since I first hunted around on the Invite area, expecting something there.

I wonder if it might be helpful to have a link *on* the Invite Codes page to this setting, indicating that this is possible? Just something like "You can change your settings here so that you're notified when one of your invites is accepted here."

Even better would be a checkbox you can tick off right there that says "notify/email me when my invitation is accepted." I haven't sent invites out for a while, and I only now discovered that two older invites I sent were never used.

Title:
Image denoting used/unused status of invite codes

Area:
Invite codes

Summary:
There should be an image which will take an invite code as an argument and then display whether the code has been used or not.

Description:
One of the problems with giving out a bunch of invite codes at once is that there's no easy way to track which ones have been used. The only way for someone trying to create an account to know if a code has been used yet or not is to try it.

There should be an image that will take an invite code as an argument and then show the used/unused status accordingly. That way, a list of codes could be kept up to date as to which have and haven't been used without the person who posted them having to do anything.

The way I'm imagining this, if I want to post a bunch of invite codes (in my journal, the codesharing community, on some other website, wherever) I'd be able to click something on the invite page, tell it how many codes I want to share, and it would spit out all the HTML for me so I could post the code, a link to the page to use the code, and the image saying whether it's been used or not. Providing a BBCode version of the same would be veering off into sparkly pony territory.

The biggest drawback to this is that images like this are completely useless to blind users, those using text only browsers, or anyone else who isn't able to see the image for whatever reason.

Changes to "Request for invite codes has been granted" email

Area:

Summary:
Add the actual codes to the email unless there are loads of them.

Also, make sure it has the usual site footer.

Description:
The "your request for invite codes has been granted" email apparently just has a link to manage/invitecodes; it doesn't have the codes in the email. I'd suggest putting the codes in the email itself, as it is for the normal invite code granting email, unless the number of codes is more than, say, 20.

It doesn't appear to have the usual footer, either. ("-- Dreamwidth Team Dreamwidth Studios" or whatever with a link back to the main site)

(This is from testing on my Dreamhack - I haven't had the email on the main site to compare, but it looks like this is one of those things where the email text is in the code.)

Number of invite codes on "invite someone" page

Area:
invite codes

Summary:
The "invite someone" page only shows up to five invite codes. The page should somehow indicate that you might have more codes than are shown, to prevent confusion.

Description:
The "invite someone" page (linked on standard site scheme pages, so the easiest way to access your invites) only lists up to five invite codes. Nowhere on that page does it mention that you might have more than five unused codes, so I've been convinced for awhile that I only have five (despite the recent distributions.) There is a link to your complete list of invite codes, but it's not clear that it might show more unused codes.

There needs to be (at least) a change to site copy stating that the page only shows the first five. Ideal would be for the "invite someone" page to say "you have * unused codes, go to complete list to see them all," or something like that.

Really amazingly awesome would be for the "invite someone" link on site pages to have the number of unused codes, like the inbox link lists unread messages. That would certainly help inspire me to get moving on handing them out!
