Title:
Making communities more visible

Area:
Communities

Summary:
There are several ways in which I think communities could be promoted a bit more around Dreamwidth.

Description:
Apart from searching for interests and hoping that the community maintainers filled out the profile for a community, looking at dw_community_promo, and asking other people, it is a bit hard finding active communities on Dreamwidth. The "random community" button usually doesn't help that much if you are looking for something specific and active. I propose a few things:

* A page similar to http://www.dreamwidth.org/syn/ with the most popular communities on DW, which would be of particular interest to new users, and a link to dw_communitiy_promo . That page could also include links to a few randomly chosen communities (opt-out for maintainers the same as opting out of account creation community promo http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/69578.html )

* A link to dw_communitiy_promo after one has created a community, so that more new communities are posted there

* Split "Recently Active" on http://www.dreamwidth.org/stats into "Recently Active Personal Journals" and "Recently Active Communities". Same with "New Accounts" (though since that also includes feeds, that might be too much)

(Ultimately, I would love to have a "promo page" where community maintainers can submit their community with a nice blurb and then it gets portrayed there for a week or so. But I haven't worked that out yet.)

Add non-existent interest from interest search

Area:
Interests

Summary:
Just like the one-click adding when searching for an existent interest, one should be able to add an non-existing interest after a search.

Description:
Okay, this is one of those minor annoying things that many people are never going to notice: If you search for an interest that people already have, there is a link to directly add it to your own. If the interest you are searching for does not already exist, you instead get a link to the "Edit your profile" page, on which you then have to put it in yourself. But I am lazy, so I want a one-click solution for this, too :)

Title:
make search respect umlauts

Area:
journal search

Summary:
Treat ä/ö/ü and other vowel 'variants' as different characters from a/o/u in the journal search.

Description:
Contrary to popular opinion, the special vowel (and sometimes also consonant) thingies in other languages (thingies is the technical term, really!) are not just fancy versions with a few dots or lines added, but different characters. I only know some things about German, but ä/ö/ü can be written as ae/oe/ue, but not as a/o/u.

I am sure people with knowledge about linguistics are getting a high blood pressure by now, but I really don't know a lot of these things. But what I know is that when I search for "Münster" in the journal search having 75% of the results be about The Munsters the Irish province is not exactly helpful and confusing at first because it's not the word I searched for. If there is any way this can be separated, it would be much appreciated.

Downside being that some people just write ä/ö/ü as a/o/u because they don't know how to do it on their keyboard. I used to type on an American keyboard and just learned the [Alt]+[numbers] combinations, but maybe that's just not widespread.

Let search by email search through display email

Area:
email search

Summary:
Searching for users by email address currently only searches through the actual email address. It should also search through the display email address.

Description:
Dreamwidth lets people assign a publicly displayed email address separate from the actual email address they use with Dreamwidth. Following the same rules for the display of the actual email address, users should be able to search through public display email addresses.

If someone has their display settings for email set to either display email or not to display an email at all, they won't come up in the email search. This is exactly what should happen if they've chosen not to have any email shown, but if they've chosen to have a display email shown, they should come up under an email search for that display email.

For example:

My actual email is actual@domain.com, but I've decided to have display@domain.com shown on my profile instead. If someone searches for actual@domain.com, I do not come up. If someone searches for display@domain.com, I should come up (but currently do not). If I change my settings to show actual@domain.com instead, I should no longer come up under a search for display@domain.com

S2 Profile Module: Add 'Search Journal' to Interaction Icons

Area:
styles

Summary:
Search Journal is currently only accessible from the Profile page. Let's add it to the profile module of S2 layouts.

Description:
If you look at the homepage of dw_suggestions (http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/), there are several little icons in the profile sidebar module. I suggest 'Search Journal' be added to these so that it'd be directly accessible via any journal page, and not only from its profile page.

Edit: the username specified on the search link will depend on which journal you're viewing. When you're viewing your own journal, it'll let your search it. When you're viewing other journals/communities, it'll let you search them.

Add 'custom access list' to 'allow search by'

Area:
Journal search

Summary:
It might be useful to add an option for 'custom access list' to the options of 'everybody/access/owner' for who can use your journal search.

Description:
I can imagine that there would be cases where people would like to give access to their search to a sub-set of the people on their access list. In this case, the ability to define a custom access list for the purpose would be useful.

Perhaps if people defined an access list called 'journal search' it could automagically become available as an option on the menu where you select the search permissions? Or if they select the 'custom list' option then the access list would be automatically created for them to populate?

Extend search to allow you to search your own journal for comments by a particular user.

Description:
I'd recommend making this a tick-box or something similar, so that you can still search for entries in which you mention a user without the results getting flooded with everywhere they've commented.

This might also be useful for communities, though there may be privacy concerns around the communities part.

Title:
the new "search for entries" should be one of the options among the rest of the site searches

Area:
search

Summary:
I'd like to be able to pick the new journal search through entries as one choice among the older kinds of searches (interests, faq, users, and so on -- that box in the toolbar and on the sitescheme).

Description:
I find it inconvenient that I have to go to the profile page to click on the search link there to search my journal. I would like it better if I could pick to search my journal from the toolbar in the search field already there along with the other options, especially when I am on my own journal or my own friends page.

That would work with my expectation that search boxes that show up on a blog allow me to search it, so it seems natural to me that my search box when viewing my journal should offer to search it if the option is available. Maybe it could be smart too, so that if I am visiting a community where I can also use an entry search my toolbar would show me the option to search that community.

Highlight in subjects as well as content when searching

Area:

Summary:
Make the bold highlighting in search results work on entry subjects as well as content.

Description:
When using the search feature (e.g. http://www.dreamwidth.org/search?search_user=exampleusername) the search term is highlighted in the results where it is in the entry. However, it is not highlighted in the entry subject. I'd suggest highlighting it in the same way (by making it bold) in the subject as in the content.

Include username in community search

Area:
search, communities

Summary:
Make community search include the username who posted the entry as well as the subject and text of the entry.

Description:
When using the search feature on a paid community (such as this one), it searches the entry content. This doesn't currently include the username of the poster - I'd suggest changing that.

Obviously it's irrelevant for personal journals, but this could be very useful for communities. Search apparently includes the entry subject as well as the entry body, so hopefully adding another field wouldn't be too much extra load, particularly as it's just for paid communities.

Search your existing reading list ONLY by interest

Description:
As Dreamwidth gets ready to add the reading filters functionality I thought it would be a wonderful idea to be able to search within your reading list to determine which ones listed a specific interest. Implement a feature similar to popwithfriends.bml

Area:
Circle

Summary:
I loved LJ's Popular With Friends feature and would like to see a similar feature on DW, updated to work with the WTF split.

Description:
LJ's Popular With Friends feature compiles a list of accounts most commonly listed as friends by your own friends. It's a paid feature.

For Dreamwidth to implement something like this, we'd have to figure out what relationships to analyze. I suggest that the feature analyze your reading list's subscriptions. And it needs a snappy new name.

I'd also like to suggest an improvement. LJ's default was to show only the accounts popular with your friends which you hadn't friended, with the option to show all users including your friends. I would like to add the ability to filter the results by personal journal, community, and feed.

Pros
* Users have another way to find things on Dreamwidth they might want to see.
* It's nifty.
* It's probably not super-difficult to code.

Cons
* I'm willing to bet it's rather resource-intensive (since it's a paid feature on LJ).
* Someone could probably make the same feature available offsite, either now or once more export-friendly ways of listing circle data are implemented, so DW might not want to invest resources into it.

Specify blogging language in user profile

Area:

Summary:
Have a field in which you select the language/s you speak; people speaking the same language can find each other more easily.

Description:
Say you're trying to learn Spanish - you could then find people who blog in it. It'd be a fun way to help you learn/practise! It'd also encourage lingual diversity (not knowing anyone online who speaks x language doesn't encourage to post in it, I mean).

I see it as functioning just like our profiles' interests: you could click on any of your languages and be linked to a page listing all the users who speak it as well. (Specifying said language/s in "edit profile," though, shouldn't be done with a field in which you actually write; rather, a scrolling list from which you select your language/s. This simplifies everything - no typos, for one, and no confusion as to whether you're supposed to write "français" or "French"!)
