Title:
Your ideas for the 'sticky entry' feature

Area:
entries

Summary:
I am looking for people's ideas on the not-yet-implemented sticky entry feature.

Description:
This is not a suggestion, but denise said I could use the community for this :)

Lots of people have made the suggestion for backdating entries in communities, but nothing ever happened in that regard. For the past weeks, I have been working on and off on a feature called the sticky entry (I think it's too late to rename it now :)), which will be available for all accounts, personal and communities.

As it is now, the feature has a few basic capabilities: You post or have already posted the entry you want to show up on top of the recent entries pages for the account. You can then, as the journal's owner or a community moderator, designate one entry to be the sticky entry. It will then be loaded on top of the recent entries page, even if you go back in time. This is basically what people know as a 'sticky thread' on forums.

A bit more information: that entry will be style-able independent from entries through CSS, but will just show like a normal entry when you don't have any special CSS defined for it. For now, we don't have options to style it in the 'customize style' options, but we will, at one point :)

Here's where you come into the equation, though. Apart from an icon and a 'pre-subject text' that can be customized it doesn't yet have any great features. Is there anything that you users want to see for this entry? I am drawing a bit of a blank here and would appreciate any input.

[again, a note that while the patch to implement this as I described here exists, it hasn't yet been reviewed and committed, so it could end up a bit different]

Thank you.

Title:
"LJ Cut "Titles as Subtitles

Area:
entries

Summary:
Having the "title" language of cuts appear in the full text of the entry.

Description:
Multiple LJ cuts are sometimes used as subheadings within an entry, but when you click on the first cut, the whole entry appears and any/all subsequent cuts disappear.

If you want to keep the flow of the entry, you have to "repeat" the cut by copying the lj-cut text again as some kind of title or bold text.

Even for initial cuts, sometimes people use the text in the title to start off a thought that they continue in the actual entry itself, but that title again disappears.

If the lj-cut text could always appear within the document, it would make things much simpler and maintain the original flow and setup of the entry. I can't count the number of times I've had to go back to my reading list or the journal itself to reread the subsequent cuts and follow where the flow of thought changes (or go back and edit my own entries to have the cut title language show up twice--as a cut and as a subheading).

Sure, you can just have the cuts as the default "read more" and the title separate (which is what I did before I figured out the lj-cut title="title here"* format.

I'm not a coding person to know how difficult or easy such a change would be, but I know on communities where there are moderated entries (it's how we as mods catch when one's been forgotten), lj-cuts appear as blue titles within the document, so maybe something similar could happen on actual entries.

* P.S. What is the dreamwidth equivalent of coding "lj-cut"?

Title:
Advanced Options area

Area:
Options/web-ui

Summary:
I'd love to see an advanced options area where all the random and very custom options could be set.

Description:
A lot of the suggestions posted here are really awesome, but a major concern is always overcluttering the Options page. It's a bit wall-o-text-y right now and can be overwhelming for new users as it currently stands. Adding more options to that page would be bad, especially going forward. The problem is that Dreamwidth is a relatively new service and will be adding features and options for years to come.

I would like to suggest an Advanced Options page, where all the random little settings could be ticked away. These would be the features that most users wouldn't need to alter but that advanced users would be interested in. I'd leave it in the capable hands of [staff profile] denise and [staff profile] mark to decide which would go where.

The advantages to this are obvious. The major disadvantage would be that it might make it more difficult for users to find exactly what they're looking for. Then again, most users have adapted to random settings pages on other sites and I have faith that DW would be able to manage it better.

Notification when tags change on an entry

Area:
notifications

Summary:
Optional notification when tags on a post change, particularly when an admin changes the tags on your community post.

Description:
I just noticed that a load of suggestions had tags added to show if they've been migrated. And I realised that nothing told me when an admin added a tag to my own posts. I'd quite like to know when that kind of thing happens, just as when the mod cutting feature is added, I'd like to know if a mod adds a cut tag to my post, or changes its security. Can an optional notification be triggered when tags change on a post? It's also something I'd like to be able to track on other posts, just like tracking comments.
