Instant Feedback Button

Title:
Instant Feedback Button

Area:
Posts

Summary:
Similar to the Facebook 'like' button, have a 'favorite' button, kudos, etc. Some sort of button, where if a person likes an entry but doesn't want to comment, they can leave some sort of feedback.

Description:
As somewhat of an author, it's frustrating when one doesn't get reviews. I may not get reviews but I do see when people favorite one of my stories on another site. That site keeps track of how many have favorite your work. Since many authors might be coming here, I think having some kind of like/favorite/kudos button would be great. Fanfiction.net and DeviantArt.com have similar options.

The thing with "Other sites have it" is that it assumes that people who are protesting a) Use those other sites, and b) Want the function to be there. There are plenty of features on sites I use that I don't like, and wouldn't vote in if given a vote - it's just most other sites you don't get a vote, you just get changes forced on you.

To be scrupulously precise, you don't get a vote on what should be implemented DW either. You get a vote to tell us how much you think something should be implemented. We still make the decisions, and I'd say around 10% of the time, we bypass the poll entirely and do what we think is best.

(I know you know this, but I've seen some people say things that make me think they don't realize! This is not a democracy, it's a benevolent dictatorship with democratic leanings.)

Also, "other sites have it"/"yeah but we're not on those other sites now are we" is not a very compelling argument for the adding or not adding of a feature. Every feature is duplicated on some other site; I can't think of a single feature any one social media site has that at least one other site doesn't have in some fashion. Ideas should be considered based on what they would add to Dreamwidth, and whether the implementation of the idea would negatively affect Dreamwidth. That's all.

Oh no - I wasn't under the impression the poll was god. It's just that you have actually asked what we think, inviting us to say "Yes I like that/no I don't/I think..." whereas a lot of places, no-one even asks. That was my point - we're being invited to give an opinion.

The "But so-and-so has it" annoys me because half the time, I'm not even on such-and-such site. So when people go "Well you can't protest this because you put up with it on Facebook!" about something - well, no... I don't put up with it on Facebook, that's sort of why I'm not on Facebook.

(I haven't voted here because my opinion is "Hate it, don't want it, but no-one is going to hold a wombat to my head and make me use it, so... other people can do whatever the hell they want." and I wasn't sure where that would go!)

*g* That would be what the "I have no opinion" and "Other: please comment" tickyboxen were intended for!

*ticks the tickyboxen*

Other, in this case - because I do have an opinion, I just don't think my hating it outweighs other people's right to have it if the Big Bosses decide to implement it, you know? Though I would vastly prefer it if it was something that could be disabled by journal-owners.

Sure, but I was responding to the "you just want DW to be like Facebook!" accusations, which is ridiculous when some sort of like function is a part of most other social network type sites. And also it's a part of sites I use and I find myself missing it every single time I use DW.
