Instant Feedback Button

Title:
Instant Feedback Button

Area:
Posts

Summary:
Similar to the Facebook 'like' button, have a 'favorite' button, kudos, etc. Some sort of button, where if a person likes an entry but doesn't want to comment, they can leave some sort of feedback.

Description:
As somewhat of an author, it's frustrating when one doesn't get reviews. I may not get reviews but I do see when people favorite one of my stories on another site. That site keeps track of how many have favorite your work. Since many authors might be coming here, I think having some kind of like/favorite/kudos button would be great. Fanfiction.net and DeviantArt.com have similar options.

While it makes sense on sites where content is very similar, it doesn't make sense to me on sites where it isn't. There is everything and anything on Dreamwidth. On some posts, having such a button would be irrelevant or, worse, inappropriate. It seems to me authors, artists, etc. can easily implement this via anonymous polls.

It could be an opt-in feature - something to check in a checkbox if you wanted it. Where it's inappropriate, you could just choose not to have it.

Alternatively, it could work as it does on facebook (although I know that some people hate facebook and see red whenever it's mentioned - I'm taking a risk here in case you are one) where people sometimes do click the "like" by mistake. A lot of the time what happens after that is that they click "unlike" right away after. But yes, sometimes there are inappropriate "like"s. For me, it's definitely worth it, to have the feature.

If it was an opt in feature, I'd say to have a standard: (Reply to this) (Like) (Thread from start) (Parent) (Thread) to the interaction links and then have the like button perform the following:

Post a single comment to the entry that can be edited later using the user's default icon that simply states: [personal profile] stormy liked this entry. That way if the user decides to go back and add further information to their comment, they can. Otherwise the feature feels like a cheap way of not putting any effort into commenting or contributing to the conversation. This way, it's almost a placeholder and a way to go - well, I really like this, but I'm not sure what else to say right now, or I'm busy and I want you to know I like it now, but I'll be back to say more and edit my comment later. Another potential idea is that you could allow comments to be members only, but perhaps the like to be anonymous. Though that's just asking for spammers to abuse it. Either way, captcha would have to be considered, and that might take out the quickness of the 'Like' button itself. It's sort of double edged that way. It'd be just as fast to make a comment with one extra click.

Also, where the comment link is (Read X comments). I'd say to include a mention of the likes there, as well so it'd read something similar to: (Read X comments) (X likes).

I am strongly against the idea of including a dislike to accompany the like if someone should suggest it.

An opt-in for posters, yes, but I'd like an opt-in as a reader too. While I like AO3's Kudos button, I dislike the FB like button. I wouldn't want to see it here for reasons several users have explained in the comments on the post I linked to above.

I find it too ambiguous for the variety of entries, because with journals you leave quick, generic fb comments for many different things, not just creative works. As a result user A might think that the appreciation button on the memorial page for the dead pet equals the generic "hugs" or "I'm sorry" comment to express sympathy, when poster B reads it as "why does this jerk 'like' that my pet died?" It wouldn't be as bad if you had to intentionally choose to include it, but for most entries I find it not so useful.

What I like about the deviantArt favorite button is that it is not just feedback, but allows people to build galleries and bookmark things, so they have memories and I get more traffic if I'm fav'ed. I would like it if DW developed/reformed the memories feature into such a social bookmarking thing, so that I could get notified if someone chooses to memorize one of my posts as a public memory, and browsing the memories was easier.

If something like this was implemented, an opt out for readers would be nice too. Personally, I don't want to see a billion comments or notes saying "So and so liked this post." So I understand that. Perhaps if you opt out as a reader, they're all hidden for you unless someone adds more content to the post (re: my comment)?

What do you think of the '+1' LJ has been putting onto some of their official comms recently? I would link to one, but the DDOS means I can't even get there to find the URL, the headerimage comp one uses it.

I don't know how it works, and have no idea if it's a JS hack or something they've done in S2, but if it is a Styles things, maybe we could put in an optional module for it for those that want this sort of thing?

That would be interesting to propose for another suggestion, but I think in here it's too similar to the already existing memories section. Perhaps a memories overhaul then?

Sounds well thought-out!

And no, "dislike" would just be asking for trouble.

I could take it or leave it for personal journals, but I do feel a +1 button would be useful for my rec comms.

I've found one. I don't see really see any difference except that it seems to me it's more meaningless than the word 'like'.

Otherwise the feature feels like a cheap way of not putting any effort into commenting or contributing to the conversation.

*ahem* Your mileage may vary. There are also a lot of people who are too busy, too shy, or simply low on spoons to always leave a "proper" reply and would find an option to at least give support/feedback that way really helpful. Or authors/artists who wouldn't mind an additional source of feedback. (Which is why I think making it opt-in/opt-out would be mandatory -- the feature means different things to different people.)

Eta: unless I misunderstood you and you were referring specifically to the comment (which could be edited later)? In that case, disregard my reply!

I know... A lot of the time someone writes about something they did, or saw, that made me smile or go "wow" but I feel stupid writing "Cool!" or whatever, or I don't have time, because I'm going through 90 entries on my break.

Instant feedback would really help.

That is an intensely interesting idea. I have way too much free time as it is. I'm usually only good for making things pretty with graphics, html, and css.

I'll always be up for helping on a small project, and contributing to Dreamwidth as a whole.

I think overhauling the bookmarking features is already on some long-term todo list. My main point was just that I like the dA button mentioned in the suggestion, because it functions as more than a clicky tip jar, and would like having functions like that, but not the suggestion as it is.

Actually, a built in "+1" feature for comments is something I'd especially like. Not because I would use it, but because when subscribed to a comm or post like this, you sometimes get individual comments with billions of "+1" or "IAWTC" replies, and I find them repetetive in the extreme--especially in reply to me.

Some way of registering people agree with a comment without requiring they fill my inbox with excess comments would work for me.

To you, perhaps, but to a lot of people (eg)...

I'm actually looking at playing with Gmail to see if I can filter comments like this straight to archive, some people simply like a reinforcing comment, etc.

There is, therefore, demand, and to an extent it'd help other things, including those of us that don't like getting "+1" replies, as it can be dealt with in a different way.
