The suggestions post

Soon (for certain values of 'soon'), there will be a "suggestions generator", where you fill out forms and it will post an entry to this community for you, for discussion and the like.

Until then, if you've got something you'd like to suggest for Dreamwidth, you can leave it as a comment here! You can review our development roadmap explanation first, since it includes a lot of our upcoming big projects.

The Suggestions Generator is now live! Please fill out that form instead.

When I'm looking at someone's profile and glancing through the various lists of users on it - subscriptions, accesses, comms, etc - I find that I expect the contextual popup to appear when I hover over the names. It would be so convenient: I could go see their journal right away, subscribe/accesslist them if I recognize the name... but since the lists aren't user-tagged, the popups don't appear right now.

Tweak to the profile page

[personal profile] trixtah 2009-04-25 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Regarding showing the birth date on the profile, would it be possible to show it in textual form rather than ISO date-format? I just show month and day (not because I want to be coy about my age, but for preventing identity theft), and by only showing "07-06", I tend to read it as being 7th of June (being a non-US-type person).

Of course, the dashes show that it's not supposed to be representing US-style shorthand, just a truncation of the full XXXX-XX-XX format, but text like "6th July" or "July 6" would be a nice-to-have.

Since there are no plans on translating the site (as far as I know?), wouldn't that be unthoughtful towards non-English users? Although possibly some floating tip could appear when hovering on the date? Say, the date is shown in numbers like it currently is ("07-06"), and when you hover your mouse over it a tip is shown reading "July 6". Would that be difficult to implement?

Crossposting notifications

[personal profile] emily 2009-04-26 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like to have the option to not receive a notification in my inbox every time I crosspost. Since I have crossposting turned on by default, everytime I post an entry I get a notification telling me that it's also been posted to LiveJournal. Most everything else that comes into the inbox can be turned off, but there's no option for this that I can find.

I know there are future plans for other things involving notifications/the inbox, so maybe this is on a to-do list already. My inbox would be very grateful if it were. :)

I brought this up in [community profile] getting_started and someone pointed me here.

I was wondering if it were possible to have your tags automatically set a default security level for the post with that tag. Example: if I have an 'adult' tag, it would be cool if when I tag a post with it, it sets the post as 'nsfw'.

Is that possible? Could it be possible, or is it too complicated to link tags to security levels?

Since dw already stores our username/passwords for other journal sites, for crossposting purposes, are there plans in the works to let users read their friends list FROM dreamwidth's reading page?

Something like a "view X's friends page as X" or "read my LJ/IJ/JF friends list", where X would be the openID of the journal in question, and would allow Dreamwidth account Y to view things that are flocked or otherwise visible only to X. (Requiring X's user/pass combo, of course, to bind it to Y.)

Right now, I can subscribe to all the journals that I watch on my LJ, but there's a lot of them and I'm lazy. Additionally, a sort of "import my flist"/"subscribe to everything friended by X" option would be nice.

Or if this already exists, someone pointing me to it would be greatly appreciated, heh.

By the way, would it be difficult to fix a small css mistake in the current (Transmogrified Basic) theme? When looking at the source code on the line with theme stylesheet it gives the following:

/* Cleaned CSS: */

/* believe me, this style is much easier to deal with if you
just leave this here. It says "lets use the IE box model" for
non IE browsers */
* { box-sizing:border-box; -moz-box-sizing:border-box }

body {
background-color: #79a9df;
font-family: Verdana , ;
font-size: 10pt;
margin: 0 10%;
padding: 0;
}

I suspect it should've been "Verdana, sans-serif;" instead. Anyway, the result is that font family specified doesn't work like it should, reverting to the browser default font (in Opera, for example). The page doesn't look pretty then. :)

I would like to precursor this with the fact that I'm not a coder, so feel free to tell me what I want is just plain not possible.

I would really like to see the box where you enter tags in the "Edit Tags" page and the "Update" page made easier to use; if the amount of tags exceeds the width of the box, and the tags I'm inserting are 'saved', it takes me back to the beginning of the box and I can't see what I'm typing or choosing from.

What I'd really like is something similar to the tag style Wordpress.com uses, whereby after typing in a tag (whether a new one, or one already 'saved') and hitting comma, the tag moves to... I don't know, the space in between the entry field and the tags field, maybe? And can be deleted by being clicked again. That way I'd be able to see all my tags if I was typing in ten million of them, and the width of the tags field would never be exceeded.

These are things which have always bugged me about LiveJournal, to the point that I always use the "Manage Tags" page to come up with new tags and the "Edit Tags" page to place them (widening the box which holds the list would be really appreciated too, if possible.)

Seconding this. I tend to use a lot of tags, and it's very annoying when I can't enter all the ones I want on the actual Update, and have to add them in manually on the Edit Tags page.

Can comment notifications get different subject lines? Perhaps if a comment has no individual title, the subject line could be "Re:<original post title>"?

The reason I ask is that GMail groups all emails with the same subject line (e.g. "Reply to your comment.") and sender (e.g. dw_null@dreamwidth.org) under one "conversation". This makes all Dwth comments that don't have individual titles get grouped together in a nonsensical and confusing manner. Frustratingly, the GMail people are religiously against making the "conversation" feature optional, so only Dwth can stop the madness. *scowl*

Gmail threading

[personal profile] cesy 2009-04-30 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
There is a plan to get this fixed, by one of a couple of possible options, including:
-Obviously, putting a subject line on comments fixes it. Adding the post title as a default subject line to all comments, similar to what you suggest, would help a lot.
-LJ managed to get Gmail to make a special exception for them, so LJ notifications thread intelligently. If DW can get hold of someone with enough power at Gmail, they can get a similar exception and then it will work properly.

You can rest assured that it is also frustrating several key members of the team, so I doubt that they will be slow to get it fixed.

Links to Posts "Outside" Cut Tags

[personal profile] tablesaw 2009-04-27 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This may exist on LJ, but I've never found it on my own or seen anyone do it.

I would really, really, really love to be able to link to a post "outside" of cut tags. That is, if a post has spoilers behind cut tags and spoilers in comments, I want to be able to link directly to that post so that it displays neither the cut text nor the comments.

I know that it's possible to kind of do this by linking to a particular day in the calendar, but if a person makes more than one entry that day, it's a crap shoot which entry will be at the top.

"Create a Poll" link on HTML "Post an Entry" view?

[personal profile] chagrined 2009-04-27 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
On the "Post an Entry" HTML view, I feel like it'd be useful to have some kind of link to "Create a Poll." This isn't a huge issue b/c this already exists on the "Rich Text" view via the "Poll Wizard," which is quite easy to use. So it's just a matter of extra clicking (switching to Rich Text, creating the poll, then switching back to HTML), but it seems like maybe the link to the Poll Wizard could also be added at the top of the HTML entry box, where there are already links to "Insert Image" and "Embed Media." In any case. This is just because I, as a user, prefer to write my entries in HTML, but I can never remember the poll HTML codes and so prefer to use a wizard-type interface for writing polls.

Re: "Create a Poll" link on HTML "Post an Entry" view?

[personal profile] jeeps 2009-04-27 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
as i don't use either the rich text or html editor, neither of these would be particularly helpful to me, but i do hate that i have to go to the faq every time i want to create a poll (can never remember the damned url). i've always wished for a "create poll" option within easy access, such as one of the drop-down menus.

Okay, this is a really inconsequential suggestion, but I thought I'd throw it out there. If there are ever any plans to add other websites on the "Other Services" section of the profile, there's a pretty big knitting contingent on Dreamwidth already - it might be fun to add Ravelry to the list. :)

[personal profile] cesy 2009-04-30 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, there is a plan to revamp this section totally, not only by adding a load more services, but also adding the option to add your own service. This plan is the main reason they haven't rushed to add more services now - the code will all be rewritten shortly.

Is there a way, or planned functionality, to let Open ID users keep a cookie so that they don't have to keep re-logging in? One of my friends just wrote me, "it's currently quite annoying to try to comment through dreamwidth/openid from the link that gets autoposted at the bottom of your crossposts. it doesn't seem to save state in any of the browsers/operating systems i've used."

Multiple revisable drafts

[personal profile] ardhra 2009-04-28 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
[personal profile] charmian briefly mentioned something related, but I thought I'd stick the full suggestion here, since I notice it's not listed in the relevant wiki wishlist either.

Another user wrote up a suggestion for [livejournal.com profile] suggestions about what I had in mind: http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/918661.html

Essentially, it would be the editing/drafting system that other blogging platforms -- Blogger, Wordpress -- already have implemented. And it would eliminate the need for a third-party client.

Re: Multiple revisable drafts

[personal profile] cesy 2009-04-30 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Both draft and scheduled posts are planned features. I'm not sure why they're not showing on the wishlist, but I'm sure I've seen it somewhere definitive (maybe [community profile] dreamwidth_meta?)

The wiki team are gradually working their way through several years' worth of suggestions posts, picking up everything, but as you can imagine, it's a big task and they haven't finished yet.

NoScript

[personal profile] somnolentblue 2009-04-28 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
This is incredibly minor, but perhaps adding a note to the 'Confirm Email' screen that people running NoScript on firefox need to allow scripts for recaptcha.net. With NoScript running, the 'Confirm Email' page doesn't show the recaptcha box at all, just the text "Confirm Email Please verify that you're human" and the continue button. It dawned on me eventually that the reason I was just looping back to that page was because of NoScript - running it makes one used to trying to figure out why a website doesn't seem to be working correctly - but it took me a few tries since the permissions for recaptcha are separate from the permissions for dreamwidth.

crossposter feature request

[personal profile] the_shoshanna 2009-04-28 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
When I make a crosspost with comments redirected to Dreamwidth, I'd like the crossposted versions to offer readers both a "read comments" link (i.e., to the full URL of the DW post itself with "#comments") and a "post a comment link (i.e., to the full URL with "mode=reply"). (If I can get a pony with that, I'd like the "read comments" link that readers on LJ/IJ/etc. see to indicate how many comments already exist at DW, but I'm not expecting that to be possible. I'm just fantasizing for a moment.)

Back in reality, I'd also like to be able to draft my own "please comment at Dreamwidth" text for when comments are redirected.

And of course I'd like to be able to do each of these on a post-by-post basis rather than all-or-nothing/globally.

Yay!

Are there any plans for making this work on DreamWidth? It's a minor thing, but the circle of people I hang with on LJ have been having fun with it, so it'd be nice to see it over here, too.

I'm hearing a lot of "This is too confusing!" from my friends on LJ when I crosspost. Part of the problem is that if the DW post is locked, the link on the LJ post takes people directly to www.dreamwidth.org. Could it go to a different page, maybe something that says "The page you have requested is access-locked. Please log in." followed by login boxes for BOTH DW users and OpenID? Then after login it would redirect to the locked post they were trying to reach in the first place.

(This has probably already been suggested, but I wanted to reiterate it, because a frustrated flist is not a happy thing!)

I'd prefer it if clicking on the comments link took one to the top of the entry page, instead of to the start of the comments as it does now. I pretty much just open each entry that way in a new tab to read it and keep having to scroll up now. Though maybe with the snazzy new link in the post subject I should just be changing my reading habits to do it that way. Or once I get a real account maybe it's something I can do in my style and customization? Ah well, a thought, for if other people agree on how the link should work.
