Add Ravelry as a profile external site

Title:
Add Ravelry as a profile external site

Area:
profile, inter-site cooperation and joy

Summary:
Ravelry's used by a rather lot of people. Let's add it as an option in that list of external sites for the profile.

Description:
Lots of people use http://ravelry.com, a social knitting and crocheting site, probably enough so that it would be worth adding as an option before Bug 23 is implemented.

For those who don't have the contents of our Bugzilla memorized, http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23 is to allow easy adding of new social networking external sites on the profile.

Adding Ravelry would of course be completely irrelevant to people who neither crochet nor knit, but wouldn't disrupt their use of the site.

I don't think there was really enough of a way to say 'OH GOD PLEASE YES' in that, so I'm adding it as a comment.

Can't you link to any external site in the profile module?

What's the difference? (And if there is one, why are we choosing certain sites to favor over others, and what advantages are they getting?)

You can link to any site in the bio; some services (those that are popular among DW users) are listed in the Other Services section. (For instance, see [personal profile] azurelunatic's profile.)

The advantage is letting people link to those accounts without having to type it into their bio, and having it displayed with that site's icon. There's no particular benefit to the site itself.

Ahh, okies ... I guess we can't just automatically pull favicons in order to be site-agnostic?

That is more-or-less what bug 23 will do when it's implemented. :) (See the link in the suggestion for more details.) Azz is suggesting a site be added until someone has the time to code bug 23, which is a larger project.

Ah, okies! ^.^ Well, if a lot of people here use Ravelry, I can see the use for something like that temporarily then. Change my vote against to a vote for. (In your mind, or something.)

If it's easy to do, and/or if bug 23 seems likely to not be implemented by the end of the summer, sure. (Someone who knows the tech specs better - would putting in the fix for Ravelry end up being an "effort: minor/trivial" kind of enhancement?)

From a preliminary glance, yep, just copying and tweaking code from, for example, the Twitter profile integration.

I don't have anything against the addition of functionality that doesn't affect my personal use of the site at all, but I don't knit and I don't have any friends who do, on DW or otherwise. I'd really rather just see bug 23 implemented asap, since that would be equally relevant to everyone.

Well, it's not really a trade-off between those two. For comparison, integrating Ravelry is probably something I (and quite a few other development volunteers) could do in 1 to 3 hours, just tweaking the code we have for Twitter or Last.fm. Solving bug #23 is more of an "a few weeks for a volunteer developer" (I have no idea how much time for a non-volunteer) thing and needs a lot of new code written for it.

+1 to this.

I used this as a way to start looking at the code-base and wrote a patch in about an hour, while bug 23... a bit more complicated x.x

So what we actually need is lots more of these, to entice people to start working on the code-base as they work their way towards the semi-mythical bug 23. (Beware the prime)
