Allow name section to be hidden

Title:
Allow name section to be hidden

Area:
Profiles

Summary:
An option to allow the name field in profiles to be hidden.

Description:
As stated here:

http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/see_request.bml?id=2155

The Name Field used to hide when custom titles and the name field were the same.

I'm not suggesting this be put back in, since it was a bug what I suggest is an option to hide the name field on the profile (like you can hide your email, location, etc.) regardless of what is put in the custom title.

To me, I prefer not having the name field in my profile since it looks neater.

ETA: Or, if you vote "Should be implemented with changes" perhaps not forcing people to input anything in the name field? Not sure how that would work.

To those who are wondering, this is a choice that I and many others like to have on our layouts, I have grown used to this layout style but I still do not like that section where the name appears, since my other contact info (sans email) is below my bio.

More options are generally good.

Why would you want to hide your name? I mean, you can put anything you want there so what would be the point?

Yeah, that's my thought on it.

This is the OP.

Yeah, you can also put a fake location in, but you HAVE to fill out the name field but not location, and I just don't like it being there. I use the custom titles instead.

If I could have an option to not be forced to fill the name field then that'd be fine with me. :P

If it's the same as your username (or if you just don't care to show it) ~ it looks redundant if you put it all over the place.

I'm not sure what you mean by "hidden." Secret? Collapsible? Only shown to some people? Not included if it's the same as journal title? Not shown to you on other's pages?

Is this because you don't want to see it yourself for layout-related reasons, or because you don't want other people to see it for privacy-related reasons?

Yeah, but the mention of the location/email similarities muddles it with privacy concerns. Also, does the OP just not want to see it herself/himself, or does she want other people to not see it? Is she trying to control the look of her profile for all viewers (design or access preference), or is she trying to control her ability to view any profile this way (viewing preference)? I just find it too vague to vote on.

OP here.

Location doesn't have to be filled, I only compared it with that because you're given the option. Why would you fill out the location only to hide it?

I think I'd much prefer not being forced to fill the name field in but I doubt that'd ever be implemented.

I've considered it and I think I've figured out what's weird to me here.

At the moment, we have no control over the layout and design of our profile pages. We can't move the bio to above the about section or change the font color or put it in columns instead of rows. All we can control is the information present in it and who can see certain parts of that information. We also have a slight level of viewing control in that we can collapse and expand sections.

So, I'm not saying one SHOULDN'T be able to control whether or not one's name displays, but presenting it as a separate aesthetic issue seems odd to me. Either lump it in with the other options that can be set to show to everyone/access list/no one, or make an argument for greater control over the layout of the profile overall.

Although I can also see how some new people, thinking their name is hidden from their profile, might put more data in there, not realizing it's going to show all over the rest of the site.

OP here.

True, if anything as I said above I'd prefer not to be frced to fill it in like I'm not forced to put where I live.

I should have thought of this more clearly. XD

It would be nice if this was css-controllable. That way people could control the look-and-feel without any other programmatic effort.
