I've considered it and I think I've figured out what's weird to me here.
At the moment, we have no control over the layout and design of our profile pages. We can't move the bio to above the about section or change the font color or put it in columns instead of rows. All we can control is the information present in it and who can see certain parts of that information. We also have a slight level of viewing control in that we can collapse and expand sections.
So, I'm not saying one SHOULDN'T be able to control whether or not one's name displays, but presenting it as a separate aesthetic issue seems odd to me. Either lump it in with the other options that can be set to show to everyone/access list/no one, or make an argument for greater control over the layout of the profile overall.
Although I can also see how some new people, thinking their name is hidden from their profile, might put more data in there, not realizing it's going to show all over the rest of the site.
