Exiting Tags Frustrating

Title:
Exiting Tags Frustrating

Area:
Tags

Summary:
At the end of a tag edit, return user to the queue of posts; at the end of the just edited post, instead of in a window by itself.

Description:
Currently when I finish editing a tag I'm shown the edited message in it's own window.
I have many posts to edit. The end of each one requires clicking back onto my journal and scrolling back to wherever I was working. If the final keystroke of the tag edit process returned me to my journal, at the end of the just modified post, that would be ideal and saving time and keystrokes.

I can see that being useful if you're tagging many memories, but sometimes someone just wants to edit the tag on one post, and in that case I'd personaly rather be returned to the post. However, if you're editing mass amounts of posts, I can see having a checkbox/another button--I'm not sure which would be easier to parse for the whole, so whichever's easier-- to take you back to the whole journal view.

...tags. I meant tags. Not memories.

How about if it returned you to the view from whence you came from? Thinking about how possible it would be, (I'm not sure it is possible to do it neatly), but if it were possible,, that would cover both situations.

I guess that would work. I'm also in favor of just waiting for the mutiple tags editor to go into effect for this sort of thing as well, as well.

That's different, though. You are suggesting returning to the 'recent entries' post, while [personal profile] afuna means returing to whereever you came from - which could be the recent entries page, the reading page, the entry page,...

I would like this, but I don't know how technically feasible it would be.

However, my own editing style wants me to return to the entry itself (I never edit from the Queue page), so it's really hard to say where that 'landing page' should go.

What's the 'original page', though? For my workflow, I consider it the original entry. For yours, it's the Queue. For others, it's their journal, or even possibly their reading page...

Nope, for me the ideal would be to go back to the entry itself. That's usaully where I start editing tags.

I suppose DW could remember what page you came to http://www.dreamwidth.org/edittags... from, but that might break something.

What you mean is the recent entries page and as that only shows the up to 200(?) latest posts, this isn't even possible for these cases.

Some people do want to go back to the post, for example if they were navigating forward and back via next/previous. If you're tagging really old entries, they would not even exist on any "recent entries" page, they'd have aged off. So return to post will work for anything, return to recent entries only for some.

But I do like the suggestion above to return you to where you came from. That way if I add a tag while reading a post on my friends page, I would go back to my friends page to pick up. If I was adding tags in the day view for posts a couple years old, I'd go back to the day I was on, etc.

What I usually do when I'm doing a tagging run and back-to-the-entry isn't the behavior I want is open the tag-setting in a new tab, set the tags, and close that tab, though. I'd probably still do that because there's less chance of an error or driving the server nuts finding the entry (if, say, I was tagging the next-to-last post on my friends entries page and four new entries have been posted since).

Well, this can be rectified by two things:

a) opening the 'edit tag' link in a new window/tab.

b) what will one do be this new feature: http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1576 - Easily add a tag to multiple entries in one go

I am rather okay with waiting for that feature or just opening a new window.

Ooh okay I rather like these ideas more, now :)

Yes, I would also say just wait for that feature, or use tabs in the meantime.

Do you want to add a separate tag to every entry? Otherwise, it should help you to pick a tag and then just pick which entries should receive that tag.

But you don't want to create 1,000 tags for them and have each of them only have that one tag, do you? Then a page that shows you, say 50 entries on which you can select a tag and then select which of the 50 entries should get that tag would help you. After selecting one tag you are still on the same 'editing tags' page, which still shows those 50 (or whatever number of entries) and you can add the next tag you need.
