Multiple poll notifications

If you're subscribed to notifications of poll votes, and have been getting multiple notifications of votes in [site community profile] dw_suggestions polls, please comment here! Let us know a) if you've been having it happen anywhere but here, and b) if you're willing to do some troubleshooting with us to figure out what's causing it.

I got this on poll votes, but it stopped yesterday. I'll be out for a few hours, but can troubleshoot after that.

Are you speaking of polls on my own suggestions? (I think I got a few, but my last suggestion was over 1 month ago and at the time I dismissed it as a glitch)

(Can you get notified of poll votes in polls you didn't post? hrm.)

Would you get notifications if you selected the "Track this" option on a post with a poll in it?

(I don't use poll notifications, so I'm not 100% sure. Watch me know my own site!)

I'm not expecting you to know what everything does exactly on DW; I mean, dude, how many lines of code are we talking about here..? O_o

TBH, I'm impressed you're keeping on top of it all as it stands. :)

http://www.dreamwidth.org/support/faqbrowse?faqid=69&q=notif implies you wouldn't, but doesn't state so explicitly.

My regular polls that got votes while I got duplicate notifications for dw_suggestion polls were not afflicted by this. Every now and then by chance I'd spot a lonely poll notification for one of my own polls lost amidst the 200th copy of a dw_suggestion poll notice...

I haven't noticed multiple notifications for polls anywhere else, but then I haven't been posting polls anywhere else.

I am happy to minion up and do troubleshooting.

Yep, been happening to me. ( I got over 60 notifications from one vote a few days ago! 0_0 ) Unfortunately, the last poll in my personal journal was anon, so I didn't notice if I got multiple notifications there.
I'm happy to troubleshoot as best I can!

Oh hey, I just realized- I told support that I didn't have the record of the notifications anymore, because I deleted them from my inbox, but I just checked and I *do* have the poll results in my e-mail. So if you want me to list the UNs of the people who voted and how many notifications I got from each of them, I can.

Sure thing! Probably won't be able to get to it for a little bit, though. Do you want it here, in the support request area, or does it matter?

I can't remember whether I changed my vote there.

And we have at least two instances of someone who had a duplicate one time and not another -- I happen to recall lots from mmmag and syderia on one of my recent ones.

Is it possible that the multiple notifications are from multiple votes, and perhaps the voter in question had a problem with votes going through/displaying had gone through?

ie it's an issue with the new AJAX voting and a small number of people/browsers, not an issue with ESN?
kareila: (Default)

[personal profile] kareila 2010-11-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I suspect the AJAX is part of it, but if that were the only factor we'd be able to reproduce it in other communities as well. So far we've only heard of it happening here in suggestions.

I thought it was something like this at first, but I got 21 notifications in less than two seconds once; if that's the result of something the user's doing, there's still something very wrong going on. (And other people have had far more in less time.)

[personal profile] red_eft 2010-11-03 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, 60+ poll votes at once is a little much for someone just mashing the 'submit' button in frustration, I think.

[personal profile] melannen 2010-11-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can see that happening by accident in some ways - for example, if a tab is saved to open whenever I start my browser, it might end up getting opened sixty or more times before I actually bother dealing with it. Or if I'm really frustrated by a page that doesn't seem to be loading and If5 it repeatedly in a rage.

However, not sixty times in the span of two seconds.

[personal profile] matgb 2010-11-03 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much, yes. My connection is sloooow tonight, and some polls I've submitted took a few seconds (one took a minute or two) to clear through, but 21 clicks in that short a time is more likely to be a bug.
msilverstar: (corset)

[personal profile] msilverstar 2010-11-03 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
the AJAX voting seems very possible to me.

Well, if only dw_suggestions polls are showing the symptoms, clearly you should post a test poll here.

I have made another suggestion that is in queue now, so if that is approved, I'm likely to get whole new bunch of poll notifications, on top of the 1500+ for my last two. D: *dreads*

I have! only on dw_suggestions, but that's the only poll I've posted lately.

I deleted most of them a few days ago because my inbox was just getting too flooded, but I have the ones that've trickled in since then. One of them posted 8 times.

I'm willing to do some troubleshooting.

Okay, I have 26 replies, and no duplicate notifications (so far.) If I recall, it started slowly and grew before, but I think if it was going happen, I would at least have a double by now.

Do you want me to give you a list of responders?

Also, if me posting a poll to a community other than DW suggestions might be helpful, I can do that, too.

Okay, I tried a poll in [community profile] common_nature here: http://common-nature.dreamwidth.org/10560.html

14 votes so far, and no duplicates. (No duplicates from the poll in my journal yet, either.)
