Collapse Cut button at end of cut
Title:
Collapse Cut button at end of cut
Area:
reading page, cut tags
Summary:
Little triangle to expand/collapse cuts on your reading page? Awesome? Another one at the bottom to collapse the cut again? Even awesomer.
Description:
So you just finished reading the huge tl;dr cut with the picture in the middle that broke your brain. Now you'd like to close it again, so you can scroll your reading page without pushing past blocks of text (and that hideous flashing animated GIF). Only problem is that to do so, you have to scroll back up (past the text and OMG why did anyone make that picture?! What warped, twisted soul... ARGH!) to the beginning of the cut in order to reach the incredibly spiffy yet totally unassuming little triangle which will save your reading page (and what's left of your sanity).
If only that triangle (whose awesomeness is inversely proportional to its tiny size) had the power to clone itself! Its identical twin, down at the bottom of the cut, silently, unobtrusively, steadfastly, and patiently waiting for the opportunity to serve. To be clicked, to be called to action! To heroically collapse that cut (the GIF, it burns!!), and, in so doing, rejoin the triangle (whose shining, sparkly goodness is inversely proportional to its monochrome... uhm... oh, never mind) at the top which spawned it.
Ah, if only.

Excellent suggestion, with funny presentation <=> more awesomeness than usual :D

Some kind of rolly-up-indication icon - ask a graphics/ui person. :-)
I think you could possibly get away with an up-pointing triangle instead of down-pointing. Some usability testing required to see if it's confusing or not.

Sadly, because a little image reminiscent of the bottom end of a window blind (the kind you pull down and release and it snap-rolls up) would be really, really funny.
But probably, you know, bad UI when taken in conjunction with existing UI.
Alas.

Some editors use a 1px line with a little right-angled head instead, this might be less obtrusive and take up less screen.

Triangle points to the right for collapsed, expands to down and up triangles for uncollapsed, I think makes sense.

* different icon as suggested above
* scroll you back to where you started
I'm wondering what it'll look like, though, when people use very short cuts for spoilers or <cut text="oh, bother"> FUCK </cut>
