Add use count/most recent use to icon selector

Title:
Add use count/most recent use to icon selector

Area:
User icons

Summary:
Add use details along with icon and keyword previews to the icon selector.

Description:
This suggestion falls under the rubric of "I am very shallow and it would be nifty if I could do X."

My thought was that within the icon selector/browse pop-up thingie (that's the technical term, of course), it would be handy to have use information for each icon along with the icon preview and keywords.

<ETA>

Due to what appears to be some confusion regarding terminology, I thought I should clarify: I don't mean the drop-down menu. I mean the pop-up that appears when you click "Browse" or "View Thumbnails" and shows you an icon preview and keywords.

popup icon selector
This thingie!

</ETA>

At the moment, when I create a post, I manually go back 20 or 30 entries to look at the pattern of icon selection before I choose an icon for that post. I like to spread them out in an aesthetically pleasing way that most likely only makes sense to me.

It would be handy (assuming there are other people who do something similar) to have that information already available in the icon selector. Something like, "last use: [date] | total uses: 123" is what I envision.

Problems and drawbacks would stem from, I assume, the relative difficulty or ease of creating the statistics generator and the associated load on the servers. It may also be a feature that some people are not interested in. Possible solutions include the ability to turn the statistics on and off, or making the feature only available to paid, premium paid, and seed accounts.

Alternatively, the feature could be available on the user's static icons page. The drawbacks to that are that the statistics would be publicly available and a user would have to load a separate page to find them.

I would love to have that information available to me to check, but preferably not in the comment icon selection interface. It would be too cluttered there for my liking, and I wouldn't generally care about that info when choosing an icon to comment with. I just want my keywords so I can pick the icon I want quickly and easily. I'd like the info to be either on the static icon page (having that info publicly available would be fine with me), or optional so I can turn it on if/when I want to check, but don't have to deal with all that extra info when I'm just leaving a quick comment.

I don't know if it's possible, but maybe there could be a way to turn on/off the display of that info within the icon selector itself? Default view would still be the list of keywords associated with the icons a user has, but maybe DW could add a way to view icon stats in that list if you wanted to on a per-use basis?

As for limiting to paid/premium/seed accounts, this is the sort of feature that might actually make me willing to pay for an account here *g*, so I wouldn't mind if it was restricted.

I also don't think it should be in the icon selector by default, but icon stats would be awesome.

Hmmmm, well I never actually USE that pop-up page when picking my icons, but I wouldn't want this additional info cluttering it up if I did. Again, I'd just want to see the icon and the keywords. I think icon stats are a great idea, just not in the icon selector (whatever version you use).

I don't care about icon stats so my only interest is that it not be too obtrusive, however it's done. As long as it doesn't make reading my keywords harder in the dropdown (maybe being an option there, because inline visual clutter would make reading thru them harder), I don't mind.

I wouldn't want it in my icon selection dropdown, either. But I have no objection to other people getting something shiny that I don't care about, so long as it's not shining in my eyes!

As long as it's tucked away in statistics, it sounds like a good idea. Not on allpics or the icon selector, though...

What I'd really like is the ability to *sort* the dropdown (and icons page) by frequency of use...

(This would come in handy for people who have a small set of icons they use regularly and the rest for special occasions. It would also let you predict which icons stay when you lose a paid account.)

...as long as it's an option. I rely on the alphabetical nature to let me find what I'm looking for.

Oh yes, optional, definitely. Theoretically I'd love to have alphabetical by keyword, and sort by recency of use and recency of upload, and let the user switch between them, at least on the browse-userpics popup.

Being able to sort the 'browse userpics' popup sounds like a GREAT idea.

This sounds like a fun thing to have. Definitely not necessary, but lots of fun. I wouldn't want to have it in the drop-down list though, it would clutter it up too much. Perhaps it could be put in the pop-up icon browser, the icon comments are displayed there so why not add this info too.

i also love the idea of icon stats (i thought of this same suggestion the other day, actually), don't think the icon selector is the proper place for them.
