finding posts with more than one tag at a time

Title:
finding posts with more than one tag at a time

Area:
tags

Summary:
Allow people viewing a blog or community to narrow down posts by two or more tags in conjunction; for example, to see posts that are tagged BOTH "reviews" AND "books".

Description:
I don't know at all if this is technically feasible, but I thought I'd give you the idea. :)

I have made a restaurant review blog on your site. So far I'm really enjoying using DW, especially the lack of ads!

As a restaurant review blog, I use a lot of tags. For example, I might tag an entry "vancouver, kitsilano, western, greek, recommended".

Right now, people can click on a tag and see all the Greek restaurants I've reviewed, for example.

I think it would be really cool if people could use more than one tag at once. For example, people could check out all the posts in "vancouver" that are also "recommended".

I think this could be of use to many blogs and communities.

I got the idea when I saw the news post about filters.

As to whether it should be paid-only or not, making it totally paid-only would not be a good idea, I think. For myself, most of my visitors are just browsing. However, having it only available on blogs that are paid, but usable by anyone, would be fine. I would definitely purchase a paid account to do that.

Edit: I originally put this in support but they suggested I put it here.

How is this suggestion different from Filter by multiple tags, which has been accepted for implementation?

http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1585 Probably just an oversight by [staff profile] denise?

[personal profile] thisisarestaurantblog, you did nothing wrong. This community gets a lot of suggestions :)

Oops. Yeah, I did a search before pointing [personal profile] thisisarestaurantblog over thisaway, but I must have had the wrong search terms. I do not have [personal profile] azurelunatic's scary suggestions database in my brain yet. :)

Hm, according to that Bugzilla, "http://username.dreamwidth.org/tag/tag1,tag2" works, and I just tried it and it does work. So perhaps a note in the FAQ pages? I've certainly wanted this functionality for ages, and it's the first I heard that it was available.

I presume the Bugzilla is there for an enhancement to the tags "front page" to provide an interface to select tags using some kind of check list or something? (which would then return a URL constructed as above)

Nope, it's to implement an AND functionality. The method with the commas is an OR functionality, so it returns entries which have one, both, or the other. That bug is so we implement the functionality of getting all entries that have both tags.

Ahhhh, light dawns. Yes, ANDing is good. :-)

Ugh, I really hope we can use something more intuitive for the union version. Neither + or & are likely to work for URL parsing, though...

Not quite! The comma looks for any entry with either the tag1 tag or the tag2 tag. Which is useful for getting a longer list of entries, but not for narrowing things down.

Ag
I believe this suggestion is for the case where you have say a hundred entries tged tag1, 200 entries tagged tag2, but only a dozen or so tagged with both tag1 and tag2.

(I'd be iffy about it being for paid-only journals. If one needs incentives to get people buying time, that's definitely useful -- but it seems a little... hrm. I dunno. It twitches my eyebrows the way that "more icons!" or "search the journal!" doesn't, for some reason.)

Already voted in favor of implementation last time it went through here, so no official opinion this time. I wouldn't like this being a paid-only feature if you'd been the first to suggest this, though, because I can't see how filtering a journal by "tag1 AND tag2" would be significantly harder on the servers than "tag1 OR tag2".
