http://www.dreamwidth.org/site/staff.bml currently lists either people's legal names or online handles. I'd like to see links to their journals as well (either official or personal depending on their choice). I remember mentions that it's important that the site owners are also site users, and linking to their journals is one way of showing that, as well as being an official link to Denise and Mark's staff journals.

Edit: I should have said that this should be opt-in for current staff members.

I think linking to mark and denise is a good idea, but many of the other staff members use their Dreamwidth's for ... well, the same stuff as everybody else, as opposed to any official capacity.

Perhaps we should link to the comms which correspond to the things they are working on?

I think cesy has exactly the opposite point in mind: if we want to emphasize that the staff are also users, we'd like people to be able to see that zorkian and synecdochic actively use the site for itself, and not just to communicate from on high to us lowly user types. I'm not sure I have an opinion on that point, but I wanted to make sure we're at least all talking about the same ideas.

I understand that; I just think her feature is a bug, at least for those of us suddenly on display.

A large part of the point of Mark and Denise having both staff accounts and regular user accounts is so that they can speak without the Voice of God effect. Most of the rest of staff, I think, haven't made journals to signal a separation because they haven't yet been held up as any more representative of the site than any other user.

Hmm. Thinking about it again, and seeing all the other comments, I think the page should link to official journals and maybe comms as appropriate (eg. dw_docs for the head of docs), and then personal journals can be opt-in for each person, since as people have said, it's good to see staff using the site for itself, but they might not want people contacting them in unofficial places, and they might not want to link different usernames/names/legal names together.

Personally, it doesn't bother me either way. Some people on the staff page may be a little concerned about this though.

I'd go with having this be opt-in, because while I feel it'd be a nice reference for anyone who wants to know they're not just talking to Random Q. User, any of the staff who don't want to share that info for whatever reason should be allowed their privacy.

Won't this potentially cause problems with people contacting staff in inappropriate places? (as in, staff members might not want to be contacted via their personal journal). Why not just have a blurb about how each staff member uses DW?

I think this is the thought I had too. While I know that *I know* that there's a time and place for everthing, I realise that not everyone else necessarily agrees with and/or recognises those particular times and places as I see them.

I think if this was gonna happen, then it'd definitely need to be opt in, and, tbh, I prefer your (charmian's) version of of having a blurb - possibly without that blurb actually revealing 'personal' accounts.

I doubt that I'm ever gonna get to a level where I'd get anywhere near risking being on such a list, but if I did, I know that I'd also want to be able to have an account where I actually could just be me, and not DW Staff.

I think that (some) people will try contacting staff through their personal journals, either because they mistakenly think that that's how they're supposed to do it, or they can't find the feedback/support links.

Isn't it already opt in? Personally, for me it's not that important that I know what the staff is doing w/ their personal accounts. If they have a totally access-locked account anyhow, that tells me absolutely nothing.

I'm really torn on this. On one hand, I want the people who help us out to feel like they can let everybody know who they are without there being any negative effects. On the other hand, there are very good reasons not to demand people be in any sort of public facing "people who handle things" list.

Yeah, I vote 'NO' on demands, and 'sure' on optional linkage.

I'd like to see it as:

1) Add a link to the official journal of any staff member with an official staff journal.

2) If they want to link to their personal journal, they can ask to have it in their bio as written there. Otherwise, they don't have to.

I'm calling this 'rejected' for now, but will contact everybody to see if they want to link their journal on the staff page, and will go back and link to the appropriate dw_* comms.
