Communities to Receive Points

Title:
Communities to Receive Points

Area:
Accounts

Summary:
Communities currently cannot receive points. I suggest allowing them to do so.

Description:
Currently, communities don't have the ability to receive points from users. I suggest that we change this. Instead of allowing users to only buy time for communities, it would be awesome if we could transfer points now that we have the points system.

Examples of ways it could be useful:
-Two people want to share the cost of a month's membership. Each person transfers 15 points.
-The community is holding a contest. People give 5 points to participate. Community now has points for prizes.
-You love a post made by a community. You want to give points as kudos. You can transfer as many points as you feel is appropriate.

For context, the reason this wasn't implemented is that there was some disagreement about how it should be handled with comms with multiple admins -- who gets to use the points, who gets to transfer the points, should disputes be resolved by a third (DW) party and if so how, etc. The sceanrio of Admin A transfering comm points to a friend, buying services for hirself rather than for the comm, yadda, just seemed to be a can of worms nobody wanted to deal with.

My with-changes: only if there's the equivalent of a community owner, who would have the final say to do with any community points, and/or a treasurer role that can be conferred upon an admin by a community owner.

Alternatively, allow admins to confer points in the name of the community, because it's slightly different to get a few points from [profile] exampleusername who is in your network and a member of a decent number of communities you're in, vs. getting a few points from say [community profile] metaquotes after you posted something amazingly hilarious that was featured there. In the first scenario, an explanation might be needed before one makes the specific connection: oh, they're an admin of that comm! -- versus the second scenario, where even if it was "[profile] exampleusername has given you 2 points on behalf of [community profile] metaquotes" (for transparency; I could see some creepy scenarios possibly) it would be easy to make the connection.

I agree. When dealing with money, there's so much potential for trouble that it would be better not to risk it, IMHO, unless there is a clear responsible party.

BTW, has anyone suggested that DW implement a 'community owner' system?

There's plans, yeah. Less "community owner" and more "community creator will be able to designate any/all of the tasks inherent in community ownership", such as letting person A manage tags for the comm as though they own it and person B change the settings on the comm and blah blah blah. Having trouble coming up with a good UI for it though.

And upon leaving the comm, will be able to hand their magic wand to someone else?

(oh god I am off topic here but it is also 5am) And what if they want to step back but still admin, just not run the whole show anymore?

Speaking of handing off comms, is there any way to petition for a comm with a deleted admin to be handed off to someone else?

For example, I'd like to take over [community profile] theauthority and have asked the members, but nothing I've found on DW's FAQ has show me where to petition.

Is there somewhere I should go that I haven't found?

Open up a support request in the Terms of Service category. (I know it doesn't seem like it has anything to do with ToS, but that's the group that has the priv necessary to do the transfer!)

Cool, just did so! Thank you! :D

Also, I just added a FAQ for that, since it comes up oftenish!

Oh, excellent! I was just going to suggest that, and then I saw this comment. XD

I'm visualizing a grid of checkboxen, and the axes of it may be flopped, so one could either easily do the "check all powers for this one person" or do the "give all people these powers".

Powers come pre-populated. (Bundles? hmm.) Grid would be silly if all members of comm were on it; there would be a thing to add them (checkboxen in membership roster + text-entry on manage page?) and then grid happy funtimes ensues. On checking, square on the grid holding checkbox highlights, so one can see more easily if there are any breaks (you have no-one holding one particular thing, or a person lacking a specific power).
