Alternate identy (aka) near user name

Title:
Alternate identy (aka) near user name

Area:
Header on comments

Summary:
In different blogs and forums I am know buy different user names. I would like to be able to put an aka near my user name.

Description:
I know the suggestion for automatic signatures of comments was already rejected and when I read through the comments I understood why.

When I started in fanfic/fandom, I picked a nom de plume which I became know by (been using it since the 80's). I used in all the places that I signed up for and then low and behold one day I go to sign up for whatever the new, hip, "in" site is and my name is not available. Now I need to pick something new. Do I add a little something to or pick something new? I always sign my posts/comments if it is not the same as my user name. It would be nice if I could put an aka near my user name so I could let it be know that both those identities are mine. I suggest making it text only with a limit to the amount of characters. I know I could make icons that addressed this but icons aren't something that I make so that leaves me with begging others.

Why not use the journal name for that rather than yet another field?

Hm, I never noticed that the journal name doesn't show. I guess the formatting could be changed to show the journal name before or after the user name, but it's also true that probably not everybody uses the journal name like a personal name, and it might be odd if say the journal was something like "Writing Archive" or whatever.

Some layouts do include the journal name on comments (or at least used to; hooray for dreamwidth where I almost never have to see custom comment pages \o/), some don't.

What might not be a bad idea is including the journal name in the mouseover for the userhead icon.

It's the little gray thing to the left of your username. If you hover over it, on most (maybe all) pages you get a special menu.

I would be all for including the display name on the contextual hover menu.

Y'know, having switched them back on on DW and discovered they're not as bad as I remembered (LJ introduced them when I was on dial up), I'd never noticed they weren't there. Think they really should be, mine is deliberately my proper name and others do similar.

But wouldn't want them generally appearing unexpectedly.

Having said that, there's a lot of space on the sitescheme next to a username on a comment, and the email notifications always give display name (username), so we could perhaps put them there anyway?

I suggested this about a year ago but it was rejected.

The display name sounds like it might be a good place for that. http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/profile/

Yeah, that's exactly my thought. You already get to set your name, and that's what this sounds like.

Unlike the rest, the display name gets sent with comment notifications, so I am of the opinion that if any not-username name field gets used more places for the name one would sign oneself as or be addressed by, that should be the one.

I'd like to see people's display names next to their usernames in comment headers in site schemes, and as an option in Customize Style (opt-in, since people are used to it not being there).
