Export memories

Title:
Export memories

Area:
memories

Summary:
I know there is a plan to overhaul memories eventually. However, in the meantime, it would be useful to be able to backup exisiting memories.

Description:
I imagine a feature to be able to export all your memories into some kind of useful format, either a CSV that you can download, or even into a private links post in your journal. The idea is so that all your existing memories can be saved in some way before memories are overhauled.

I'd have no clue what to do with a CSV file, but I think a private post of links or a simple HTML file or something similar would be really useful.

I think the FAQ could be added to, for folks (like you) who aren't sure. But generally, most browsers will let you import a CSV file as a set of links, to become part of your browser's bookmarks. There are different formats for doing so, but generally CSV is widely supported, and easy enough to create as output.

If someone builds this, it's a great candidate for upstreaming, as it would be fantastically useful on other sites that don't plan to overhaul their memories at any point soon.

(I would say "great minds, etc." except we were just chatting about this. Heh.)

It would be neat if it was in a format that browsers export their bookmarks, then you could maybe import it into programs and services that use bookmarks too, like you can import your browsers bookmarks into delicious and such.

Maybe all memories that are set to private security could be marked so that delicious would import them as private as default? But I have no idea how those formats work, I just vaguely remember that for browser bookmarks you could pick whether they were all public or private when importing there, but maybe there could be some way to transfer that information.

I second this. Not sure about the private entries for Delicious, but importing the memories into common browsers would be fantastic.

I think the exporter should have an importer to go with it ... I don't know if you'd need that to be a separate suggestion, but I'd love a way to get data in if we have a way to get data out.

Voted no opinion because I have never used the memories feature on LJ, and I don't know (or care, really) what the plans are for the overhaul here.
