Have the radio button next to "OpenID" or "Dreamwidth account" on the comment form auto-select if you enter text in the text boxes associated with that button.

Description:
I came across this when trying to post a reply to a comment in my journal via my iPhone - I wasn't logged in, so I typed in my account name and password, but forgot to click the radio button next to "Dreamwidth account" (which wasn't selected, even though I have anon and openID commenting turned off), sending me to the Comment Not Posted form (luckily my comment was persistent so I didn't have to re-type it: thank you!).

It occurred to me that if the radio button auto-selected when you filled out the account/pw fields, that sort of annoyance would be avoided. At the very least, have it auto-selected if the Anonymous and OpenID commenting is turned off.

I'm not sure what drawbacks there would be: certainly if someone typed in both the OpenID field and then the DW account field, the radio button for the most recent one used would be selected, and there would be no way to un-select it - you'd have to pick one of the other options to change it, but if you were posting a comment, you'd want one of the options selected anyway.

Going to the Comment Not Posted form and having to re-enter your credentials is more of a hassle on a smartphone or other small mobile device than on a full-size computer, but still an annoyance either way.

I was going to test it on here, but OpenID and anonymous commenting on suggestions posts is disabled. Was that deliberate, or just someone forgot to change a default?

Deliberate -- I wanted changes to DW to be discussed by DW users. (OpenID users who have confirmed an email address can comment, so it's not just people with DW accounts proper; if I wanted to allow unconfirmed OpenID accounts I'd also have to allow anon comments, and I really don't want to allow anon comments. I'm looking forward to the bug that will split them up.)

Would this slow down loading, by having the comment page continously talk to dreamwidth?

Would this autoselect an autofilled field?

I foresee many unhappy trackpad accidents if this is implemented.

I really hate the way another journal site likes to autoselect a radiobutton for me, and the way my own choice is overruled when there's a glitch or a page is reloaded. I wouldn't want anything like that to happen on Dreamwidth.

I can try to answer a couple of your questions: I don't know how Dreamwidth would implement it, but in my experience this sort of thing is usually done with Javascript, so there would be no extra calls to Dreamwidth, as the code is already loaded with the page.

Also, the autoselect usually doesn't occur until you click and start typing in the proper field, so mousing over it shouldn't be a problem (er, if that's what you're talking about with the trackpad comment).

I have enabled autofill in firefox, and sometimes if I mouse over a field I accidentally click the autofill suggestion. I wouldn't want a mishap like that to autoselect the corresponding radio button.

Like, meaning to use my regular account and accidentally filling in and autoselecting my extremekink openid sock.

Yeah, I can see where that might be a problem. I haven't worked with autofill yet, so I have no idea what would happen, although I can see that it might happen as you say. I'll leave it up to someone more familiar with DW and autoselects to see if anything can be done.

(They're my cats, back when Sora, the one on top, was a kitten. At the time I took the picture, he was munching on Nefer's ear and shortly afterwards she got tired of that and hissed and slapped at him. XD)
