Variation of "Tropospherical" Site Scheme

Title:
Variation of "Tropospherical" Site Scheme

Area:
site schemes

Summary:
I'd like a variation of the "Tropospherical" site scheme in colours that are easier on the eyes.

Description:
As it happens, the default site scheme has always been the one that I liked best. However, "best" in this case means "just about bearable" because I absolutely can't stand the colours. I love everything else about it, but those particular shades of red and purple both make me cringe - especially in combination with that light grey background.

Vertical navigation confuses me to no end, so switching to Celerity is not an option for me. I really like the colours of that one, though. A plain, white background and a shade of green that's easy on the eyes - awesome!

It would be neat if there was a version of Tropospherical that had a white background as well, maybe combined with a similarly muted colour as Celerity - it doesn't have to be green; I'd suggest blue or brown, for example. Even the default red would look better without the grey.

I'm curious - does anybody actually *like* these schemes as they are?? Could one of them perhaps be replaced? If not, what do you think about adding a third option? I know I'm not the only one who has a problem with the colours; I've come across several comments by random people complaining about them off-handedly.

Ha! My work here is done.

(Seriously, it's a very very very small shift from white, but in our pre-launch tests it was enough to keep from triggering ocular migraines in our testers who get it from white bgs.)

And it works beautifully. I had thought maybe it was Tropo's narrower display that was preventing pain because I wasn't fatiguing my eyes scanning alllllllllllll the way to the end of a 500-character line, but I never would have guessed it was because the page was .00005% off from pure white. Yay and another reason to love this site scheme. XD

Are we talking about this page as I see it now? (I check the styles page, and can't find 'troposperical', but the descriptions sound like this page.)

Anyway, the small shift from white looks flat-out gray to me, and is very uncomfortable; it's like I can't quite make my eyes focus. It's not enough to make me stop reading... but I sure appreciate the 'view in my style' button in most pages. Is it possible to add that option to the tropo style, or are the base codes incompatible?

(Not urging, just curious. My knowledge of code stops at <a href and <em>.)

The main site pages (for instance, load www.dreamwidth.org) is known as the "site scheme", and we have six of them. if you go to the Display tab of Account Settings, there are other options you can try to see if there's something that would work better for you.

Hi, please tell me if there is a better place to ask this, but it seems appropriate given you mention it specifically - I've been getting around my problem with the colours by using the Lynx light option this way (and hitting the save button, I checked *g*) but every time I log in it defaults back to the red and white. I'm assuming that's not meant to happen, and I'm just doing something wrong, but I can't work out what it is!

This seems to be connected to using LJLogin to log in to DW.

You may already know this, but just to verify: When you click on your username to switch logins for DW, there's a clicky at the bottom of it for "preferences". That'll bring up a window with various tabs including stealth/UIDs/login sessions. At the end is "site scheme". Is that set to Lynx or to Tropo red?

I didn't know that - I checked and it was set to 'none', so I've changed it to Lynx. Thank you! I hadn't managed to find that myself, obviously :)

Huzzah! Yes, if it's set to 'none', it'll use the site's default scheme and always that each time you use it to login (which if you're me, is ALWAYS), so that's why it kept switching back on you. Should stick now. :D

Yes, I always use it too. I love it for journal switching on LJ too, but most of my logins to DW in the past have been to crosspost fest entries and I'm useless at remembering passwords. I don't even want to think about how many times I reset my password before I started using it *g*

LOL, that's why I use it. Can't remember my MAIN password most of the time. I'm a roleplayer, and if I had to remember the passwords for every account, I'd go insane with the typing when I switched seven characters in ten minutes. So much easier just to click-switch. LJ, DW, JF, and IJ, simples.

That's not the way it's supposed to happen, at all. If it's linked to LJ Login it wouldn't be the first time that extension has done daft things.

Open a Support request, it's beyond me to even help, but someone'll know it.

It turns out there is a setting in LJLogin for the site scheme, so now [personal profile] musyc has pointed me to it hopefully all will go smoothly. Thank you!

Yeah, LJLogin has a bad habit of causing major problems. It's one of the reasons why we want to add a main/alternate account type system, since that way people will stop trying to use LJLogin and screwing things up. *g*

Once I work out how to stay logged in then I won't need to use LJLogin for DW. I only need the easy switch between journals for LJ, I'm just awful with passwords so logging in each time is a pain. For some reason it won't keep me logged in right now, but I'll track it down.

Weird and interesting, because for me it's the other way round - trying to read text on the light grey background makes my eyes hurt. (I use ?format=light on everything to make it readable.) So I'd really, really love a site scheme that has black text on a white background.

That's really fascinating -- you're an absolute minority when it comes to ocular migraines.

Celerity has black text/white bg, as does Lynx!

Oh, the fun of being an outlier! *g*

Lynx doesn't have the menus, and Celerity's large text and washed-out colours don't appeal to me. So for now, using Tropo Red and giving the ?format=light bookmarklet a good workout is still the best option for me. I don't spend much time on site pages, thankfully. :)
