Site scheme by cookie

Title:
Site scheme by cookie

Area:
Site scheme

Summary:
Make site scheme a locally-stored preference to allow location-based choice of scheme

Description:
When at work, I, like many, am forced to use IE6. Thus, I use the Celerity site scheme to work around IE6 mishandling Tropo in important ways. I would prefer to use Tropo at home, but don't want to have to mess around with changing my site scheme back and forth.

It would be nice, if it's practical, to make the site scheme a preference stored in a cookie so users could select their preferred site scheme once in each location (or each browser, if desired) and then not have to worry about it.

A potential negative impact is that many users would prefer to simply select their preferred site scheme once, and then not have to worry about it wherever they are. To work around this, we might keep the current method as "Default scheme for me" but create an option to "Override scheme for this location" to set the cookie-based preference; if there is no site cookie specifying a scheme, the user-default is used.

I use Google Chrome in my personal laptop, Internet Explorer in my family's PC and Firefox everywhere else (I carry it in my USB -- I'd carry Chrome, but the latest versions haven't been converted to Portable). It definitely makes a difference re: how the site looks, although not to the point to make me want to change the scheme.

I wonder how many people would use this vs how easy/difficult it is to implement.

Definitely, yes. If the work around you suggest isn't implemented, then I'm against the implementation of this suggestion.

Which I don't see as a problem if we just set a good default value.

Do you mean some kind of default option, or the default site scheme? Because I don't think it's possible to make a default site scheme that's right for everyone - that's why people were so keen on different site schemes and styles in the first place.

default option, as in "always use this scheme and don't look for cookies".

If there was a good default value so that people who didn't need this never had to worry about it, this would be awesome.

The work around would absolutely have to be included for me to be down with this suggestion; one of the computers I sometimes use to access Dreamwidth eats cookies like they're about to go stale, and if I had to keep resetting things here as well as at Delicious I'd probably lose my marbles.

I'm not sure how this would work with the way I use site schemes. I use Tropospherical Red on my main account, and Tropospherical Purple on my alternate account. That way I can tell which one I'm signed into easily. If the site scheme setting is bound to the location, then I'd worry that I would lose this functionality.

This. I'm sorry for the OP's trouble, but this seems like a large break with current functionality, which is account-settings-based.

Hopefully it would check for user settings first and then a cookie, so you could still separate different accounts.

Or multiple users on the same computer.

Yes. While I haven't got t'other half over to DW yet (was hard enough getting him on to LJ!), I'd like to think that different browsers, as well as different users and/or profiles could utilise different settings. Of course, this is likely to make implementation horrendously difficult. <wry smile>

So long as the current behaviour was kept as the default, I wouldn't mind this option being added.

If there was an option to use cookies instead of the existing account-based settings, that would work.
