Ability to filter Network page

Title:
Ability to filter Network page

Area:
network page

Summary:
A user should be able to select certain users/communities so that those posts will never appear on their network page.

Description:
I would like to be able to pick out particular communities, users, or feeds and never see those posts when I (as a logged-in user) read my network page.

I read my network page a lot. Several weeks ago, because of a feed-related bug, I was getting multi-thousand-word Stargate Atlantis slash fanfics, uncut, on my network page, and I would have loved a way to filter those out of my network, as well as communities that make me a little bit sad (like the wine community; I'm allergic.)

Currently, the only way to make sure that certain posts never show up on my network page is to subscribe to those users and communities, then filter them from my default reading list. It seems like it would be more efficient to create a filter that could be applied without subscribing.

IIRC, this might also be covered a bit in the planned killfile feature.

This is my with-changes: have it in the killfile.

I actually do NOT want this option only available via the killfile. There are communities/journals that I don't want to come up as I'm going through network that I would be fine with seeing if someone directed me to a specific entry for a particular purpose. If this becomes part of the killfile, I would have to logout to see any such entry. (and, if it were an access-only entry, if, say, I had joined a community that I didn't want to have show up without my specifically seeking that info out, I would be unable to view the entry without adjusting my killfile settings.)

Maybe the design of the killfile could take this into consideration?

There's a post in [site community profile] dw_nifty that includes a way to do this with custom CSS. I'm kind of indifferent about adding it as an extra feature, since it's rarely used, option bloat, etc.

What I would like to see is the ability to create a filter for the reading page, and set that filter as the default setting for the reading page.

I second this so very much.

You have that option, when you're viewing your reading page logged-in. Just create a reading filter named Default, and that will be the filter applied when you're logged in and viewing your journal.

Having that filter be applied when logged out has been rejected.

Oh my gosh I had NO idea you could do that. I am going to have so much fun now. THANK YOU!

I'm getting confused between Reading and Network. Network is like friendsfriends, right?

ETA: I really love the idea, there can be some pretty dire stuff that's linked through subscriptions.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know, in case you come back to check on this entry, that I'm rejecting this partially because I can't see any way to make an effective "frontend" for it -- we're trying very hard not to add new features that can only be accessed via the admin console or via a separate page shoved off in the corner, and we're also trying to avoid adding new settings whenever possible, and this is a feature that would only benefit a few people but be visible/clutter for all -- and partially because we do already have a way that you can get the same end results. ([personal profile] cesy linked to the dw-nifty entry about removing certain posts from your reading/network pages based on custom CSS.) I know the custom CSS solution isn't perfectly what you suggested, but it's very close!
