The suggestions post

Soon (for certain values of 'soon'), there will be a "suggestions generator", where you fill out forms and it will post an entry to this community for you, for discussion and the like.

Until then, if you've got something you'd like to suggest for Dreamwidth, you can leave it as a comment here! You can review our development roadmap explanation first, since it includes a lot of our upcoming big projects.

The Suggestions Generator is now live! Please fill out that form instead.

Recent Comments in Subscriptions

One feature which I'd find incredibly useful is a list of entries with recent comments (or edits) from your subscription list. At the moment, the Recent Comments page only tracks your own comments, which isn't much use if you want to follow conversations in other people's journals. Having to scroll back through several pages of subscription entries to check ongoing conversations, and trying to remember if 164 comments is more than last time you checked or not, is a bit of a hassle.

The list should have one line per edited/commented post, not one line per comment, otherwise a single high-traffic post will swamp the list. Only edited/commented posts should appear; including new posts with no comments would be a waste of space (a big deal if you only get the latest 10) since they're easy to find from the standard Reading Page. So something like this:

* dw-suggestions / The suggestions post: updated 2009-05-04 02:33 pm
* somerandomcommunity / Second Post: updated 2009-05-04 11:21 am
* anothercommunity / Hello World: updated 2009-05-03 08:47 pm
* somerandomcommunity / Sixth Post: updated 2009-05-03 06:43 pm

Is this possible?

Oh, and perhaps restrict it to posts more than one day old? Not much point listing new posts even if they do have even more recent comments.

A big +1 to this, except this part:

The list should have one line per edited/commented post, not one line per comment, otherwise a single high-traffic post will swamp the list.

I think this should be user-set rather than hard-coded. Settings would look something like this:

Your Recent Comments post should display:
[] Comments by you in your journal
[] Comments by you in other journals/communities
[] Comments by other people in your journal
[] Comments by other people in response to you in other journals/communities
[] Comments on posts/threads you're watching

Organize comments by
() Date posted
() Thread
() Poster's username

I thought the idea was comments on older entries in journals/communities you're subscribed to, though. If you're tracking a thread, you'll get the comments in your inbox, and if you're not, how will it know what you're watching?

You still get notifications of comments you post (in Recent Comments) and comments other people post in your journal or in reply to you (in your inbox and/or email), so why not combine them with comments in threads you're watching in a single place that functions like a real mailbox?

Personally I'm not interested in a mailbox; I don't want notifications of every single comment, I just want to be able to see quickly which posts have been updated since I last checked my DW account.

On a message board, that's frequently achieved by moving threads back to the top of the list every time there's a new post, but that's probably not appropriate for a site like DW where the original posts have a higher priority than comments. Though perhaps an option to sort your Reading Page by updated-date instead of creation-date would work. Maybe a second dropdown in the navigation panel?

Filter: [All Subscriptions] [By Updated] [VIEW]

Oh! I see. That's very different from what I was thinking of (obviously!). I think it would be awesome to sort your reading page by date of last change, since on a post with no comments or edits, the post date would be the date updated.
