Hide Unused Inbox Categories

Title:
Hide Unused Inbox Categories

Area:
notifications

Summary:
If someone has set up their notifications so they don't get one category of notifications, that category in the inbox should be hidden.

Description:
The inbox has various views corresponding to various categories of notifications - for example one can choose to see only circle updates, only new/changed entries and comments, and so on. Each of these corresponds to a type of notification (or several types, in the case of Entries and Comments) in the notifications tab of the settings page.

If someone has unchecked the option to receive one of those kinds of notifications, and there aren't any messages of that kind remaining in the inbox, that category should be hidden from the list on the right, just for neatness. (For example, I don't have birthday reminders turned on, so the Birthdays category will always be empty.)

This could be especially useful if more kinds of notifications are added.

A potential drawback could be someone not realizing that they *could* enable birthday reminders (or whatever).

Since it wouldn't hide the category unless there weren't any relevant messages in the inbox, it shouldn't confuse somebody into thinking that choosing not to receive those notifications anymore also deleted the previous messages.

I dislike the idea of hiding things like this, it removes choices too completely.

Would be good to show which options are enabled in the inbox nav area, and to directly enable/disable them from there. That would be better than the current indirect settings panel.

I still don't like the idea of hiding categories completely.

I think I'd rather they were greyed out, since that's become the standard internet code for inactive functions.
