imported entries should appear on friends pages

Title:
imported entries should appear on friends pages

Area:
entry importing from offsite

Summary:
When I import a recent entry from LJ to DW, it should appear on my DW friends' reading pages just like an entry I posted normally. Or make it customizable somewhere in my our their settings. Right now I have to repost anything I've imported if I want it to show up on their reading pages.

Description:
Right now, when I import recent entries from offsite (LJ) to DW, my friends on DW say that those entries do not appear on their reading pages. I've been working around that by reposting the entries on DW with basically the same text again, but that's kind of awkward and unattractive. Also, the fact that imported entries don't show up is counterintuitive, and it took me a while to realize that was what was going on, since clearly the entries were visible in DW as well. It might cause more trouble for someone who's less familiar with possible modes of failure.

It would be better if, when I import a recent entry from LJ to DW, it appeared on my DW friends' reading pages just like an entry I posted normally. It's possible that, for people reading entries from multiple sites on DW, this could lead to duplicate entries, but I imagine that there is already a workaround for this, since it also comes up with crossposting. I can't think of any other obvious drawbacks, but if it seems like they might exist, you could always make it an option in the import menu — a checkbox with "make these entries visible on my friends' reading pages", perhaps unchecked by default.

The reason they don't appear on the reading lists as is is because people who import a journal from another service that's been around for a while will then flood their friends' reading page with thousands of entries. So, that's something to take into consideration when proposing changing this.

I might be okay with this if it were just, like, the three most recent entries. I mean, I think the real solution to your problem is to post via the DW crossposter, instead of importing entries after the fact. But if there were a limit to the number of entries that showed up on the recent page, that might be okay.

If we could make them show at their posting date rather than their server date, this would work. Or, as someone said, just the most recent ones, or ones that haven't been imported before.

+1 posting date.
I wouldn't want 3000 old imported entries to suddenly appear on my reading page.

This seems unlikely, but would certainly be better behavior IMO.

cross-posting from Dreamwidth is so reliable, I just always do it now. Seems like a low-ish priority to me.

Not for me. Wouldn't affect me at all, but I have a friend ([personal profile] innerbrat who has a perm account on LJ and doesn't want to switch as she's heavily invested there, she's using DW as a backup and currently only rarely imports.

She doesn't want to crosspost from here, she spends most of her time there. But I'd like to see her stuff here if she runs the importer, and I know others do things like her, preferring to post to LJ then import.

I'd rather all my friends switched here, but if they don't want to (yet), making the site friendlier to them might make them more likely to use it, which'll help the long term goal.

Only if they're posted with the original date, so only recent posts are displayed.
