Context-sensitive view journal link post-update for backdated entries
Title:
Context-sensitive view journal link post-update for backdated entries
Area:
entries, update, sane UI
Summary:
When you make an entry on a day that is not today or a reasonable facsimile thereof (when there's a chance it's not in lastn), 'View updated journal' should take you to the day you updated on.
Description:
So when you make an entry dated to a day that is not today, it will only sometimes show up on the lastn (most recent entries) main page of your journal. Nevertheless, the post-posting-entry page will show a "view your updated journal" link to lastn.
When the Date Out of Order toggle is on, the server should check for the date and make the View your updated journal link context-sensitive, and link you to the day on which you posted.
Benefits include 99% less cursing from me every time I make a backdated entry, click 'view updated journal', and don't see my entry. When I do remember, I have to click the link to view the entry, then click the day link from there, and I get annoyed every time I have to do that.
Drawbacks might include someone who for whatever reason wanted to go to their main journal page on purpose after posting to the past, but there are other available links such as the great honking username up in the site header, and there's no 'go to that day' link.
You can't, at this time, post dated out of order to a comm.

And I agree with that wording change for that link, regardless of whether it stays or whether it becomes context-sensitive.

I think that if it becomes context-sensitive, it really aught not be labeled "view most recent" because then it's REALLY contradicting itself.
My major objection to just changing the function of the link already in existence without relabeling it is that people will all of a sudden have an unlabeled function change, which tends to suck.
But if the original link gets relabeled for when you've posted something that's not backdated, then the context-sensitive link labeled something along the lines of "view all entries on [date]" could replace it when something was backdated.

I was assuming that the day link would be labeled some sort of appropriately, and didn't bother to document that assumption. Undocumented assumptions on the designer's part leads to un-implemented key portions of the feature on the programmer's part, which can be very dangerous.
I agree that stating the date, instead of a generic "view the day that you posted your entry onto" sort of thing, would be ideal: you'll see right off what date you posted to, and that could probably avert user error if someone realized that oops, they meant to post in 2010 and there they are in 1980.

I'm not afraid of Azz. :)
Adding another link that does what Azz is after would be kinda nifty (especially if it somehow automagically decided not to show up if the entry WAS on your most recent page), but changing what currently works fairly well, and has for years, seems bad juju.
