Un-order community join-subscribe workflow

Title:
Un-order community join-subscribe workflow

Area:
communities

Summary:
Community join/subscribe workflow is not friendly when approaching it subscribe/join. Make it one page or make it flow from subscribe to join naturally.

Description:
The community join and subscribe workflow is not nice to people doing it backwards.

It's better than it was; there's a link to the join page from the subscribe page. However, if you wind up at the subscribe page for a community first, you are dumped back out of that workflow, and unless you think to open the join page in a tab, you have to scrabble around and figure out how to join the community.

Compare the join-subscribe version of the workflow, where you're prompted if you also want to subscribe in addition to joining, and you move on naturally to the next page and you don't have to work to do it. That end of the workflow is awesome, and doing it backwards is really ugly by contrast.

Most old users will have got used to the workflow and pick join first, knowing it works better that way. This is bad.

It would be easy to accidentally get into an infinite loop of join-subscribe-join-subscribe-join if this were implemented klutzily.

Mostly I like this idea. If it's implemented, though, I think there should be a check to see if the community is closed (or if it is, but the user has an invitation) before forwarding them to the join page. Otherwise, it more or less ends up saying "Would you like to join this community? Sorry, you can't."

I regularly forget which order I should do it in, here and on LJ, definitely needs improvement--ideally tie it to the way you add a journal to the circle, all on one page, two pages seems superflous from a taskflow perspective.

I never understood why it was two pages, either. With the caveat for closed communities mentioned above by [personal profile] ct, I like this option best.
