add a link to the account settings page to the navbar

Title:
add a link to the account settings page to the navbar

Area:
navigation bar

Summary:
The navigation bar should have a link to the Account Settings page.

Description:
Most of the time, the only Dreamwidth page I have open is my dreamroll. This means that pretty much any time I want to tinker with my Dreamwidth settings, I have to bring up a site-schemed page to get to the Account Settings page, which is annoying extra step.

And given how often people hear about new settings from the people they read, it would make sense to make the settings page accessible from the navigation strip. Especially since at this time, navstrip displays only non-site-scheme pages that therefore all require that annoying extra step of bring up a site-schemed page before you can get to Account Settings.

The only real downside I can see here is that it might clutter up the navbar unnecessarily for people who don't use Dreamwidth similarly.

I don't really have anything to add about the suggestion, but for some reason the phrase "dreamroll" makes me really, really happy and I like that a lot.

I know that feeling! It fits, because that's what all this is- we get to refresh and scroll and see the individual dreams and hopes roll down the page.

I love technology.

I like the suggestion. I do think that the right direction to go would be to allow each user to customize the Nav bar for the quick links to the features they want.

Please! Said custom navbar should be based on viewer, when logged in, IMO. Could be as simple as a link you click that drops a dynamic menu of your custom options, too, if that's easier than displaying customized modules inline.

I like this idea--I have a link to my regularly visited pages in my links list at the bottom, but being able to choose what's in the navbar would be a lot more useful.

Er, the navstrip links to several siteschemed pages, like home, the inbox, your profile page (although that's not going to be siteschemed forever), and a couple of others. I couldn't tell from your write up whether you didn't know that or you meant something else when you typed Especially since at this time, navstrip displays only non-site-scheme pages that therefore all require that annoying extra step of bring up a site-schemed page before you can get to Account Settings.

I think it's supposed to be "...displays only on non-site-scheme pages...."

Oh! thanks, that does make sense.

I'd make this opt-in. I use my deewee similarly, but I've also got my customization pages saved in my bookmarks toolbar.

I don't see how there is space on the navbar to fit in yet another link. It is already very crowded at least in my monitor size.

I think the taskbar is cluttered enough. I would like to be able to modify its content, the same way we can choose modules for our journal. If we could add content ourselves, I would want that to be one of the options. If we can't, I don't want anymore clutter on it.

I won't object if this gets implemented as opt-in, but at my usual screen resolution I feel the navbar is just under the "too cluttered" line and adding anything will push it over that line. More cluttered = more likely to turn it off, which is why I don't use LJ's navbar at all.

Moderately against adding more clutter. It's one click away from almost any page, and it's not something people are accessing THAT often, are they?

If anything, I'd like to see a broader poll/cardsort before trying to shoehorn anything else into the navbar by default (up to and including a customizable module).
