Communal Community icons

Title:
Communal Community icons

Area:
posting

Summary:
I would like to be able to use a community's icons when posting to that community.

Description:
Communities, like people, get icon slots. Unlike people, those icons can't actually be used, to the best of my knowledge, because when you go to post to that community the only icons you're given the choice of using are the icons that you personally have uploaded to your account. Mostly, that's fine. But there are times when I don't personally have an icon that fits a post, or when there is a type of post specific to that community that would be really cool to use the same icon every time that type of post is made no matter who makes the post. In those circumstances, it would be really cool if there were some way to choose to use the icons that community has uploaded.

I'd be down with this, as long as it was a community setting -- I think some maintainers may have uploaded icons with the expectation that they wouldn't be used.

I think it's a neat idea, though, because I've always been sad that there's no point uploading icons to a community.

Maybe maintainers could specify whether the icon's for community use when they upload the icon?

This would be perfect. A per-community setting would also be okay.

Oh yes, that's a good point. *changes vote to 'implemented-with-changes'*

Bug 1883 might be relevant to this - then you could choose to see community userpics on your reading page. I'd like to have your suggestion as an option as well, though.

Doesn't that only deal with the default pic for the community, though? This would be much cooler, since the community could have userpics for different topics and posts and people could use the appropriate one.

I voted for "implement-as-is" under the impression that what you're talking about would be (or at least give) the ability to use the icon for an official post from "the community" as a moderator or admin or something.

Is this what you mean?

I think what the OP suggests is more general than that: any person with posting access could use the community's icons.

ETA: I guess http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/43367.html better fits what you mean although I have no idea whether it would mean admins/moderators could use the community's icons when doing this.

ah, changed my vote to "with changes," then, as I'd rather see community icons used for "the community" or someone representing the community, than individual users within a community.

The problem with that is that people may then come to rely on the fact that the icons can't be used by a non-admin, and assume that posts made using that icon are always official posts. Since anybody can upload the same icon to their own account, this could be bad.

That said, I'm not saying this is necessarily a bad idea; just offering another perspective. What we really need for that is to implement the mod hat feature...

ah, excellent point. Yes, the mod hat feature sounds like an excellent way to do this. Well, I'm sure we'll work it out. DW tends to be good at doing that.

I +1 the ability to reserve a mod icon. Perhaps the default would be easiest to code?

I also agree with the earlier comment that it should be a per community setting.

Since anyone can copy/download an icon, that's not much in the way of security.

Not so much a measure of security but a measure of convenience and to prevent accidental usage, otherwise the less on-the-ball would be posting as the mod all the time.

Bumping this up since this has been two years and yet the problem doesn't seem to have been resolved. Please let me know if it has and what I must do to be able to use my private community's icons. Thanks.

It's not available yet. I see that the owners have approved it for development, but no one has claimed this one in Bugzilla. It's waiting for a developer or two to come along and start work.

If you're comfortable poking around in Bugzilla, this is the link: http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2168
