Notifications: uncheck 'also notify me by e-mail' when subscribing/make it an opt-out option

Title:
Notifications: uncheck 'also notify me by e-mail' when subscribing/make it an opt-out option

Area:
notifications, account settings

Summary:
The 'also notify me by e-mail' option is checked by default when you add a notification subscription. Make the default unchecked OR make it an option that can be deactivated at http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=notifications. * Please tell what you'd prefer in a comment. *

Description:
Also, as someone explained, it means the AJAX track popup is completely pointless since you always have to click on 'More options' to go uncheck that bloody box. Worse, it actually makes you go through one more click, which defeats the purpose of AJAX.

Edit: I think people should at least be given the possibility to turn that off once and for all. It's the kind of little thing that gets really annoying when you have to do it every time and making it a setting wouldn't bother people who prefer e-mail notifications.

If you don't see what I mean, go to http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/subscriptions/user?journal=dw_suggestions and select anything on the list. You'll see that, on the right, the e-mail box gets automatically checked.

Given how many requests are seen for things to skip the inbox entirely and just go straight to email, I think this would be terrible UI.

This wasn't an issue for people who don't want e-mail notifications until the ajax made tracking less convenient, so we never heard from the people who want stuff to their inbox and not e-mail.

I'd love to be able to set a "Default", and then the ajax-y box uses my default, and if I want to do something other than my default, I follow the "more options" link.

I think if we can't set our own defaults, then having the email as an option is the right choice. But I really want to be able to set my own personal default for how I should be notified about new subscriptions. (Which, in my case, is inbox+IM.)

Which reminds me that i need to write that entry about why options are bad in 90% of cases.

I'd be good with a setting to change the default, but the setting should start out with default-checked, for exactly the reason [personal profile] zarhooie mentioned.

Yes. I'm tired of having to continually uncheck that box every time I subscribe to something. I have all notifications to comments/posts I've actually made emailed to me, everything else, not. That helps keep things organized.

Yeah, I've got the same system. Makes everything so much easier to keep organised.

Please don't change the default for everyone. I like having everything go to my email. Let people change their default, by all means (I actually thought it did that already when you ticked or unticked the "Select all" boxes on Manage Subscriptions), but please don't change mine.

Yes, this. I like that the default is email too. I never use the inbox for anything.

I remember I thought the same thing when the system was new over on LJ. I was very disappointed when it turned out not to be so :-/

make it an option that can be deactivated

This is my vote.
