A way to easily copy and paste Create Entry setting preferences
Title:
A way to easily copy and paste Create Entry setting preferences
Area:
Posting
Summary:
It would be nice if an option could be implemented, once the new Create Entries page is out of beta, to quickly and easily copy-and-paste one's setting preferences.
Description:
The new Create Entries page, which is currently in beta, has a lot of different options to customize the page to a user's liking. But for users who have multiple accounts, for RPing or other reasons, remembering those options and applying them the same way to several different accounts might be troublesome. I'm opted-in to the beta and I have the page set up in a way I like for this account, but when I switch to other accounts it's jarring because things aren't the same way. I could manually set them all up in the same way (and I probably will after I finish posting this suggestion, since it's on my mind now), but it would be nice to have a way to rapidly apply all of my preferences at once.
My suggestion is to have some sort of button you can click somewhere, maybe on one of the Manage Account tabs, to generate a textual list of your preferences that you can copy, and a textbox somewhere else on the same page where you can paste those preferences and automatically apply them. (Once you've logged into the account you want to apply them on, of course.) The list would read something like:
entry_field:column;show_panels:entry-link,tags,currents,journal,comment-settings;panel_arrangement:(some sort of... thing to indicate what order and location the panels are arranged in)
Obviously that's just garbage spewed out by someone who doesn't have the faintest clue how this stuff works, so I wouldn't expect it to look exactly (or even necessarily remotely) like that. But something along those lines!
It would also be nice for users who have a specific way they want their page layout to look, but feel like temporarily changing it either to see if there's another way they like better, or perhaps for Support troubleshooting; they could save their preferences and easily revert to them this way.
This suggestion:
Should be implemented as-is.

Obviously I have nothing against functionality that isn't used very much, but I don't think that something used as much as the Create Entry page should be cluttered with it.

Eventually, yes, and still something I really want to do (especially for people like those poor RPers with dozens of accounts), but we haven't been able to get past the spec stage; every time we've tried to settle some of The Deep Questions of "okay, conceptually speaking, how would this work" the discussion falls apart pretty quickly. If it's going to happen, it's not likely to happen anytime soon unless somebody decides to make it Their Crusade to get it to spec and can identify some of the sticking points. (And then it will take a lot of coding and testing to actually do it, methinks.)
And a procedural note: generally speaking, when considering suggestions, don't let your thoughts on a particular small suggestion rest on whether that Big Project will get done or not done! That was a particular anti-pattern in LJ's suggestions comm -- someone would propose something tiny and useful, somebody else would come along and say "well, that would fit in better with [huge project]", tiny-suggestion would get tied to huge-project, and because the number of people who could do huge-project was very small and those people were very busy, huge-project would get delayed forever and tiny-suggestion would never happen. We almost certainly can't stop the huge projects getting delayed, since we are limited in our resources and there are enough huge projects to keep us busy for the next hundred years or so, but I try to be militant about not letting tiny-suggestion and huge-project get yoked together.
(If you generally would not support tiny-suggestion except as a subset of huge-project and would not want to see tiny-suggestion get implemented if huge-project didn't happen until 2114, that's fine, but I still try to call people on that when I see it happening!)

And yeah, incremental changes that make things a tiny bit better are things I generally approve of as long as they don't get specifically in the way of something else, so my vote is going to be with changes, the change being "it'd be grand if this can be combined in the Big Project but a separate solution to this is fine"
I mean, I only have one account (I think, I found I admin a few comms I'd forgotten even joining when I went to that page linked in the news post, so my memory isn't great), but I know people with many, and this would make a significant subset of, importantly, heavy paying users, quite happy.

I personally plan to upload my consciousness to the internet and continue working on Dreamwidth until I get bored. Computer programs don't have RSI problems :P

I think it is a lot of work for a small feature for a small subset of users. Sorry.
