Having the option of tags appearing at the TOP of entries

Title:
Having the option of tags appearing at the TOP of entries

Area:
tags

Summary:
Having the option of displaying tags above the actual text portion of an entry would be beneficial in many ways, detailed below.

Description:
As things currently stand, I am under the impression tags appear under the main portion of an entry, and that there is no way to choose otherwise. I remember on LJ there was an option to display many things about an entry above it instead, such as mood, location, etc. I feel that having similar options here on DW, particularly regarding tags, would benefit a great number of people. Particularly, I know that it would help myself and a great deal of my friends who would benefit from having a choice other than completely cutting entries that might be of an upsetting or "triggering" nature.

Tagging entries as triggering is, so far, rather ineffective, since people tend not to see the tags until they have already read at least a good portion of an entry. If these tags were, however, to be placed above an entry, it would be much easier to avoid reading potentially upsetting entries if desired.

That's what the cut is for. If you're posting something with triggering content, it goes behind a cut.

Like [personal profile] dhamphir says, the cut option exists for this purpose. However, having the option to put tags at the top of entries seems like a reasonable thing to offer when customizing a layout, for aesthetic purposes if nothing else.

For aesthetic purposes, yeah, it's not a big deal. They already allow meta data to be before or after the text of the entry. But to say it's because of triggering content is disingenuous (at best) and asshattery otherwise, because anyone who posts triggering content w/o a cut is a royal jerk and there's no excuse for it.

Not all trauma/panic triggers are created equal. I might not have suspected, for example, that one person I know has a phobia of butterflies. Now that I know this, I won't be surprising them with butterfly pictures, but had they not mentioned it to me, I might have thought nothing of posting uncut a reasonably sized adorable photo of me in elementary school playing with butterflies.

Though to more effectively deal with entries containing stuff that people don't want to see at all, for whatever reason, there already exists the paid account option to create a default reading page filter that excludes certain tags by user -- though that does have the weakness of needing to go edit every time a new do-not-want tag from that user crops up, as opposed to something like that Tumblr tool that removes identically formed tags no matter the user. Though Tumblr has an architecture and culture that encourages common phrasing for content tags.

Please do NOT get me started on Tumblr and the godawful tags there. *rolls eyes* You couldn't pay me enough to spend one second more in that environment.

Actually, right now if I could have trigger warnings they'd be for some of the most seriously unexpected things: love, romance within relationships, it's tearing me up to read about anyone else's while mine are a mess. So I think triggers don't always have to fall along the usual meta lines but can be about...anything that bothers you, I suppose. It tore me up to read about people's moms after my mom passed (in fact, seeing or hearing anything about anyone else's still-living mom still tears me up). So...putting the tags up top might help people who just don't want to see certain topics discussed right now (but I'm even more in favor of letting us have kill files for our entire reading list because I would so totally block fandom posts from all corners in a heartbeat).

If you view tags in the site style, tags are at the top of the page.

That's for the single entry view only, right? I was thinking about the reading page when I read this.

Yeah. I misunderstood you.

Is this something that is down to the layout of the individual style?

That's what I thought. Doesn't it depend what style you've selected for your journal (thus, reading page)?

Yes, it's easy to add to any layout, but most default styles don't have this option available. It'd be nice to have the standard styles tweaked to offer the option of above/below, if it would be suitable in the layout, like the 1/2/3 column option.

This is more of a side issue but it irritates me that you can choose to display metadata before or after an entry but tags aren't included in this. They're always displayed below the entry. I really think that tags should be included in metadata in layouts.

This might potentially solve the whole issue, if tags were included in the metadata bundle (either at the bottom or top, not in the middle, because that would make things look odd if there were more than one line): someone who needed to view tags first for whatever reason could then make sure that the metadata was at the top of the entry in their view.

I've often thought this but then I would also like to be able to display tags at the top but metadata at the bottom (because I often don't care about it) so I understand why they're two distinct things.

Yeah - I'd rather add an option for tags that's similar to the one for metadata.

I'm nonplussed by the trigger-related motivation, but I would love this to be implemented just so I have an idea how much attention I want to give a reading-page entry. That, and I have some friends with brilliant and amusing tagging skills that could use some love. I would turn this on if I could.
