Retrofit entry tag-only interface?

Summary:
Retrofit the entry tagging (tag-only) interface to include New Tag Awesomeness, and degrade gracefully to the current interface if the browser doesn't support it.

Description:
I find the autocompleting tag whatsit to be basically the best thing ever, enough that I miss it when using the tag-edit-only interface on entries that need retagging. (Related: I have too many tags.)

Would it be feasible to add the fancy new tag functionality to the entry tagging page?

Some points to consider:

Would it degrade well for devices that just can't cope with the fancy tagging? (If not, it's a non-starter.)
Would it affect the page load significantly on slow connections?

I enjoy seeing the list; I enjoy having the list selectable; basically the only bit I don't enjoy is how it doesn't suggest autocompletions if I'm trying to write in.

For that matter, I actually don't enjoy the small tag area to write in.

My "with changes" is that I'd also like the tag area to be larger. I always run out of room and it's not a textarea so I can't expand it.

(tho on that note I'd like it if the tag entry field on the post entry page were a textarea as well, ha. well maybe it is with the new post entry page, I haven't been using that one so I'm not surrrre.)

My import-from-LJ left me with too many tags (thankfully only 40) and as I had time yesterday, I want through to that.

I think the whole tagging system needs an overhaul, and I want to create a DW suggestions post for that, but right now I'm still collecting my thoughts.

I will be delighted to see your thoughts when you collect them!

Tags feel like they still have a lot of "in the dorm room, with BML" assumptions hanging on to them.

Actually, tags were Mark and Mahlon, in the office, pair-programming!

(But LJ's was one of the first implementations, and there's been a bunch of changes in state-of-the-art since.)

I would like it to have both the selectable list of all my tags, and the autocomplete. I generally use that page when I want to look at my whole list to make sure I didn't forget anything (like, not that I forgot what I called the tag, but that I forgot entirely that I actually had a tag on that subject), but it is nice to also have the autocomplete.

Denise, could you link to the suggestion or the bug this is a duplicate of? I was looking for this today because I would really like it to be implemented so I wanted to track it but I couldn't find it.
