Error notification character limit in post title

Title:
Error notification character limit in post title

Area:
Entries

Summary:
Add an error notification that title text goes over character limit.

Description:
I didn't notice for three days that my title text got cut off on a post I made. If there could be either a popup after you hit post, or on the post complete page, or even if there was a lathing character limit in the actual entry box, some way I can know when I post that my entry title is too long would be great.

I support a more general solution for issues of limited length editable text.

Regardless of what the field in question is, it's good to know before you post whether you went over the limit. See also Comment length warning in preview for discussion on a recent related suggestion.

Also, the behavior in the beta should probably be changed to match the current version unless and until this particular (or similar) suggestion is approved for implementation.

But it looks like there's already a character limit. I tested it and it doesn't cut off until...here

I mean, it'll eat the last 4 characters so that it can insert "Re: " at the beginning when someone replies, but it seems to work fine to me. Am I missing something?

FYI, the reason for that is partially the restriction is 100 characters or 255 bytes, whichever comes first (to allow for text in non-Western character sets). So it's hard to tell the actual length of a subject until it gets submitted!

It seems like there's the same limit for comment subjects and entry subjects to me. I used the same title as in my comment and it won't let me type anything after "here". Sorry, I'm still confused.

What was your title?

Yeah, it cuts off "ting for an elevator?" for me too, right when I paste it in.

It's probably just a bug with the beta then.

Tried this in beta and non-beta to confirm. In non-beta, it refuses to let me past in the full string. In beta I can paste it in but, as you note, it doesn't end up in the post. Bug with the beta form.

Definitely ought to be fixed, though, IMO! :)

Yeah, fix the bug. And if there's still a limit, tell the user as they're typing it in; or, if you can't test for characters vs. bytes, tell them with a conspicuous error message as soon as they submit it.

I had this same problem with user icon keywords too. Would have been nice to have a notification!
