Request Tag function for modded communities

Title:
Request Tag function for modded communities

Area:
tags, communities

Summary:
Would be good to show whether the community allows member-generated tags, and if not, allow them to request new tags from the mods.

Description:
I just posted to a community and there was no tag for what I wanted. I typed it in (Beta Post interface) but when I posted, there was a message that only mods can create tags. That's better than blocking the post, but I had to edit the post and write a note to the mods, and there should be a smoother interaction.

1) let the poster know whether they can freely create tags

2) if not, provide an automated way to request tags

3) identify those requests so that mods can filter them in their Inbox / mail client

4) if necessary, include anti-spam logic to avoid hundreds of requests at once (I assume you have such for community posts)

Requesting tags can easily be done manually.

[personal profile] zaluzianskya 2011-12-23 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
"Easily" is relative. Right now, you have to PM the community maintainer, or reply to a "Request tags here" post (if they've bothered to set it up). What's wrong with making it easier?

It all depends on your definition of "easy".

If this gets to those in control of DW...!

If it gets to those in control of DW, then... what, exactly?

Perhaps a member tag system could be implemented.

There already is one: it's "setting the community so anyone can create tags". Basically there are two tag settings: who can create new tags, and who can tag entries with existing tags. Community admins can set both of them. Most admins set it up so anyone can tag entries but only they can create new tags, to avoid 25 million misspelled versions of the same tag or to enforce their tagging scheme, but it can be changed.

she's not the only one

FWIW, requesting a new tag can be done easily if you're comfortable sending PMs, if you know enough to know who the maintainer is, if you're comfortable doing such things, etc.

Personally, I don't post to comms often, and really hate it when tag protocol isn't displayed easily.

I think a system where the user adds tags as if it were a post to their journal, but a comm maintainer has to approve any not already in use would work well, and some way of warning would be good as well.

Automation is good, especially of features that behave differently on ones own jhournal to elsewhere.

I agree that a workflow for "add what you like, but admins approve new ones" would be nice.

I like this idea; I can add say 'rating: PG' where there's already 'rating: G' and 'rating: R' tags but the mod will still have to agree with it because they don't want 'ratingPG' and 'rating p.g.' and the like cropping up.

I would love that setting - in high-traffic comms I mod, I turn off members-create-tags because cleaning up all the tag typos and merging tags with two slightly different names and etc is such a pain in the ass. But I don't really want to make all the new tags, either!

I don't have any high-traffic comms, but I agree with this very much. Especially since I go months where I get slammed with work or personal matters and can't keep watch on tags on a regular basis.

This was my thought. It would be cool if a notification of some kind were sent to the comm maintainer(s) that a user had tagged a post with currently not existing tags and would you like to come approve them please. Meanwhile, the poster should be pre-advised what the tag settings are, and the post success page could include "You have requested to create tags; the maintainers have been notified" or some such.
