See who's in a particular custom filter when posting

Title:
See who's in a particular custom filter when posting

Area:
posting

Summary:
When locking a post to custom access filters, have some way of clicking on the name of a custom filter to see exactly who's in it.

Description:
If it's been a long time since I've set up an access filter, I don't necessarily know exactly who I put in it. Furthermore, if I'm using a filter I don't use often, the list of people who belong in it might have changed. For instance, I might be locking a post to people I know who live in the same town as me, and someone on my access list has moved to town who lived elsewhere the last time I used the filter.

Yesterday, I absent-mindedly clicked on a filter name, hoping to open up a list of people in it. When it didn't happen, I realized that perhaps it could.

My thought would be that clicking on a filter name should open up a new window which contained the "Manage Filters" page. Ideally, it should have the filter I clicked on selected, but I don't know enough about the code to know if that's feasible.

Alternatively, perhaps there could simply be a link to "Manage Filters" at the top of the custom filter checkbox section.

With changes: I really like the idea of being able to see who's in a filter (as I forget all the time, sometimes embarrassingly), but in terms of the proposed implementation, I'd rather see two changes:

- go directly to the list for that filter, not to the manage filters page (that list page should have a link to the main manage filters page, as well as one back to where I came from); after all, I'm in the middle of a specific workflow seeking info about that specific group and not the whole filtering process.

- not a full new window, as I find them horrible and loathesome. However, something that clearly looks and behaves like a help pop-up or the like without taking over the screen would be fine.

I don't want a new window or a pop-up, if we can do ajaxy insert into page goodness. And if we can't, I'd rather the name be a regular link that I can go forward to as normal or open in a new tab/window, as I would with any other.

It would be great if we double-checked that my entry draft had been saved before the filter list was pushed, though.

Having it slide-down and have the info inset (like in an i-frame) would work for me -- so it's not entirely a pop-up but is a sub-section that takes up no room unless it's triggered. The site uses Ajax elsewhere, anyway, so it seems reasonable that it could use it in this instance, as well.

I don't like new windows opening (though I can tolerate tabs in firefox/safari), but I dislike even more "go to new window" -- for the worry about whether it saves what I'm doing, but also b/c that pulls me out of my current workflow (posting) and into something new (editing filter). It really only works, usably, if the primary workflow (posting) remains the focus, and the additional workflow is obviously subsumed to the primary path.

If those issues were addressed, I'd be all for it.

More often than not, I don't want to navigate away from the page I'm on, I just want to see who is or is not in a particular filter, with a link from there to the manage filters page.
