Notifications and posting via jabber bot

Title:
Notifications and posting via jabber bot

Area:
Notifications / Posting

Summary:
A Dreamwidth jabber bot would allow notifications and posting via instant message.

Description:
Currently the only ways to receive notifications are via the DW inbox, or through email. Posting is done through webform, email, or standalone client. I propose creating a Dreamwidth jabber bot that would interface with the notification and posting system to allow both via instant message. Yes, LJ had a jabber bot, but its implementation and features were lacking.

Additionally, a complete XMPP API for common functions (posting, reading, notifications, etc) could allow easy integration with client programs and other very cool features.

Sounds good in general, but should be a low priority compared to a lot of other suggestions that have been mentioned.

I don't really use any IMs, so I might be a bit biased here :) Notification sounds good, the submitting... reminds me a bit too much posting via Twitter and after all, Dreamwidth will have a client in the future.

I think I just dislike IM and don't quite see why posting from them is needed:)

I've never really understood this desire and would like to know what functions the poster considers needed.

I like the idea of having comprehensive public APIs, but if I understand how that would work correctly, it would mean that independent developers could easily write things like a jabber client without DW having to.

I don't really think DW itself should do a jabber integration, though. We need to concentrate on DW, not on integrating with every other service out there.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards an API that gives the ability to interact, and then letting outsiders build the clients.

Well, a part of the suggestion is notification -- which would be a lot easier (on Dreamwidth) in a "push" configuration then a "the client asks every 5 minutes 'Anything for me yet'" configuration
