Area:
Inbox

Summary:
Make it toggleable as to whether the *content* of a private inbox message is sent in email. Currently the whole message comes with the notification, instead of just saying "you have a message".

Description:
DW is known for its superior privacy features. One thing it *doesn't* have - yet - is truly secure messaging, i.e. the only thing that goes outside DW is "you have a message". However, some people like using email as a vehicle for interacting with their social media. So I think in our privacy settings we should have a radio button: "Send content of messages with notification: yes/no" We could do this for comments, too, as a 2.0 thing. You could go one step further and make the "from whom" part togggleable too. Some messages are more sensitive than others... f'rex, the fact that I got a message from, oh, say, Bernie Sanders or Coretta Scott King or Dan Rather would be far more sensitive than getting a message from Joe Random I went to school with who didn't amount to much. I don't think we should go down as far as per-user.... that's a little much, and if you're that level of paranoid you should probably just turn off the "who" altogether.... but still. Having "you've got mail" land in your Gmail or Yahoo inbox where g-ds know who can see it is a lot safer than "meet me outside the palace at 2am with the gunpowder! Cheers, Guy"...

Dreamwidth has an active, sizable roleplaying community, a consequence of which is that there are a lot of "character accounts" scattered across the site. As someone who's very curious about DW's site statistics, I can't help but think that means there's a lot of essentially fictional data skewing things one way or another.

If possible, I'd like for roleplayers to be able to specify an account as being made for roleplay. It would have to be in a way that doesn't affect paid services, since some get paid/paid premium accounts and some don't. In addition to being able to choose it during account creation, there would also need to be an option for existing accounts to "switch over", since there are many, MANY existing character accounts.

Challenges involved: oh boy! I'm not at all familiar with site coding, especially Dreamwidth's, so I can't imagine how complicated this might be. I also don't know how many people would actually use this option, but I thought I'd throw this out there anyway.

View Poll: Allow users to specify an account as a roleplaying account

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:1383224sircaliban2 factor authentication2012-09-28T10:50:31Z2012-09-28T14:02:21Zpublic83Posted by: sircaliban

Title:
2 factor authentication

Area:
improvement to login

Summary:
Create a 2 factor authentication option. Let me know if I should resubmit them as separate suggestions.

* When I want to control who can see which bits on my profile, some things are set here and some are set over in Account Settings -> Privacy (under Contact Info Security and DW Private Messages). Some things are set in Account Settings but then overridden in Edit Profile! I don't know whether this is pure historical legacy, or whether it's because the stuff that's in Account Settings applies more widely than just the profile, but I think it's confusing.

* I can't exercise any control over who can see website URLs that I enter. This is already covered by another suggestion (http://dw-suggestions.dreamwidth.org/404239.html), I'm just mentioning it here for completeness.

* There is a line that reads "DW Private Messages: OBSOLETE: This option has been moved to Account Settings". Why is this here at all?

* There is no granular control over who can see IM usernames. The access level for all contact info (email, Yahoo, Etsy, Gtalk, Jabber, Skype, Twitter, etc etc etc) is set in Account Settings. I think it would be good to be able to control the visibility of each contact method individually.

None of this is important or urgent, but I think giving this page a clean-up at some stage would be a Good Thing :-)

View Poll: Tidy up the Edit Profile page

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:1360804zelliehAfter commenting, return to previous comment-thread settings in entry2012-07-02T13:38:01Z2012-07-02T13:53:38Zpublic5Posted by: zellieh

Title:
After commenting, return to previous comment-thread settings in entry

Area:
comments, entries

Summary:
After I leave a comment, I am returned to an entry page set to the default Threaded view for comments. It is difficult and cumbersome managing keywords for icons especially when having a high number of icons. The current system has literally not changed much since 2001. It would be nice having a sort of keyword managing place, one where you could assign icons (and drag and drop would be awesome there!) or rename or merge keywords as you can for entry tags. Additionally, keeping a list of keywords that you've used but don't currently have an icon assigned would be helpful and useful to roleplayers. Even if it's just a static list would let the user see what they've used. As denise said here:
http://dw-biz.dreamwidth.org/7186.html?thread=773394#cmt773394
it might be computationally expensive getting a retroactive list from old comments, I'd suggest not doing that though and just adding a old keyword if someone actively views a comment with an old keyword- it would be looking for that icon anyway and it'd just display the default when it doesn't find it, though I'm not familiar with how the process works exactly.

View Poll: Icon keywords
</poll-9952>

Edit!!!! In order to clarify + additional:

It is extremely awkward managing keywords from the icon page from a little tiny text area box, particularly when having many large sets of keywords on one icon with only commas as a separator. I suggest a separate manage area for a list of icon keywords currently in use, and possibly a list of keywords used in the past for reference and the ability to reassign old keywords to new icons. People do not always remember exactly the way they typed a keyword they don't actually have saved.

We have a management page for entry tags, where we can delete, rename, merge and view what is tagged to a specific entry tag. I am suggesting something similar for keywords- if not their own page, at least a section on the icon upload page where we do not have to deal with the tiny text area and only the text area. I can see being able to select a keyword with a check box and hitting a "Rename" button to be able to rename keywords, or select two keywords via check box and hit a "merge" button, or select some "delete" button. Then possibly an "add new keyword" button. That would make keywords more manageable and I don't think it'd require a lot of work, and we already have a check-and-hit-button to delete icons themselves.

We can only rename keywords, we cannot merge them. I've tried to merge keywords, and it didn't work. There is no obvious option nor way to merge keywords. Trying to rename one into another fails. -This is on Bugzilla and is already on the to-do list, but it's part of the bigger management system, so I thought I should include it.

Renaming keywords is sort of a hit or miss using the text area on the icon page, especially if there are multiple keywords to an icon. You do not know if the rename was successful until you go to check comments made with the old keyword- there is absolutely no confirmation, and it is far too easy to typo and create a horrible Frankenkeyword out of the one you're trying to rename and one of the others. Then it becomes annoying trying to undo that because there is no undo button, either, and you have to figure out what keyword you renamed, fix the innocent keyword, and try to rename the suspect keyword again.

This is the same old tired system that has been in use since LiveJournal's early days: By that, I am implying: surely with new coding and technology we should be able to have a more dynamic, easy to use icon and keyword management option.

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:1319579the_cats_motherOption to Hide Community Member List2012-02-02T20:24:27Z2012-02-02T20:24:27Zpublic29Posted by: the_cats_mother

Title:
Option to Hide Community Member List

Area:
Privacy

Summary:
I see a suggestion for invisibility for communities was rejected (sadly) but what about an option to hide the member list?

Description:
I'd like more privacy for members of communities with a sensitive subject matter or to avoid harrassment of members. Example; under another username on LJ, I belong to a small community which has attracted a very unsuitable would-be member. This person has been refused membership and is now pestering members to plead on his/her behalf, both on their journals and even by tracking them down on other sites via their profile pages. (There was a dark time previously when journal titles and subtitles didn't even exist, but we don't like to talk about those days.) However, one day For Some Reason those controls were moved to the Customize Journal Style page. Much consternation and confusion raged across the land, for the journal title and subtitle and in fact THE FIRST THING one sees on one's profile, so it seems pretty natural to want to edit it there; in fact, some journal styles hide the subtitle completely. WHY IS IT EDITED THERE. WHERE IS THE LOGIC. BUFFY QUOTE.

...cried the people.

Years later, Dreamwidth came to exist and forked off of LJ's existing code, and that was great. Even greater was the fact that DW was hard at work at correcting some of LJ's more questionable coding decisions. Great, great stuff. However, this fork included the illogical switch of title/subtitle control, and thus it still sits in Customize Journal Style, making way less sense than it would to be in Edit Profile.

Sadness, and also it just took me like two minutes to find because seriously, why is it there?!

I propose that Dreamwidth undo this illogical decision and restore title/subtitle to its rightful place under Edit Profile. The only drawback I see is that it may confuse people who have gotten used to it being under Customize; but since Edit Profile is really the natural place to look for it I think that will be the lesser confusion. Plus, there could be a link where that control used to be pointing people in the right direction (or at least that link to Customize could exist under Edit Profile so I never waste two minutes again). Also it might be hard to code or something. But probably it would be awesome and everybody would be happy again, and that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

View Poll: move journal title controls back to Edit Profile

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:1309870ᴜʟᴛɪᴍᴀᴛᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴄʀᴀsᴛɪɴᴀᴛᴏʀAdd Tumblr to Other Sites in Profile2012-01-13T18:48:18Z2012-01-13T18:48:18Zpublic13Posted by: mage

Title:
Add Tumblr to Other Sites in Profile

Area:
Profiles

Summary:
There are many sites you can add to your profile already so why not add Tumblr? As the current system stands, if I wish to receive notifications a community with tags for, say, multiple pairings, and I want to track at least fifteen of those tags, I have to select one from the dropdown menu, track it, select another, track it, etc. It isn't a major inconvenience but especially now that I am retracking a lot of communities and users that have imported from LiveJournal, I would prefer to be able to mass-select a whole bunch of tags. I feel like maybe this is a feature that would also be appreciated by the LiveJournal rpers who have recently crossed over.

The reason I mention shift/ctrl clicking is because I feel like it is intuitive and requires very little explanation on the page, and it is a system already in place when it comes to tagging entries. I think being able to type something and see the options that appear (i.e. typing "character" and getting all tags that include the word character) would be incredibly helpful for communities or users with many, many tags especially if they are making use of the tiered tag system.

The potential drawbacks that I can see...

I don't know enough about code to be able to say if this is a large recode job, but it feels like the code used for selecting tags in the "edit tags on this entry" pages is different to the "track this community" pages.

Clutter: a small dropdown box is simple and takes little room. This idea may require more space on the page to be able to enter or select tags.

Users may accidentally select more or incorrect tags to track and because it is a more "intrusive" feature than simply tagging an entry (because it send the updates to your email or inbox) this could annoy or upset people.

View Poll: the ability to select multiple tags when tracking users and communities

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:1296729sᴛᴏʀᴍʏAdd Plurk to Other Sites in Profile2011-12-30T22:56:40Z2011-12-30T22:56:40Zpublic2Posted by: stormy

Title:
Add Plurk to Other Sites in Profile

Area:
Profiles

Summary:
Currently you can add many social networking sites to your profile. Could perhaps go one further and add h for parent, and l for child in thread.

Ok, clearly I'm a vim user, but regardless of that, these keys are used pretty much nowhere as shortcuts. FF already nicely implements / for search.

The single most brilliant idea of G+ is I can cleanly skip or backup a post with one keypress. (It would appear I'm easily pleased) Spacebar doesn't do it - especially here where a post could be 5 lines or 500 lines with embedded pictures. Also sometimes it's nice to cleanly go back to start of a post to check/re-read. No other site, to my knowledge does similar, but I now press these damn keys on LJ and FB all the time - and still it never works no matter how many times I try! :D

Any other website that offers a shortcut or two tends to be using meta key combinations like CTRL / ALT. This of course means there's a big chance of getting in the way of local applications which have mapped the same combination. Skip post then becomes skip track in winamp or volume and you're irritated (or deafened) :)

DW has lengthy posts regularly - some of them I'm simply not going to be interested in - be that another 206 pictures of someone's redecorating, pet cat, paper clip collection, or simply a huge post on something you've no interest in.

Set an anchor on each entry, and let me skip in one smooth action. It's a simple fix for much added slickness.

View Poll: vi keyboard shortcuts blatantly stolen from G+ please

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:583336ninetydegrees (90d)☕Account Settings: merge 'Comment Pages' option with 'Entry View Style' option2011-08-17T23:41:01Z2011-08-17T23:45:00Zpublic13Posted by: ninetydegrees

Title:
Account Settings: merge 'Comment Pages' option with 'Entry View Style' option

Area:
settings

Summary:
See below as it's quite complicated.

Description:
On Account Settings [http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=display], you have two options:

1- Comment Pages - View comment pages in your own journal style

This is the option DW inherited from LiveJournal.

When enabled, clicking on 'Leave a comment', 'Read comments', a permalink or a cut anywhere on the site will append style=mine to the target URL. Comment and reply pages get therefore loaded in your own style or the site skin if you've disabled custom comment pages.

2- Entry View Style - When viewing entry pages (including yours), use this style: Original Style/Site Skin/My own style/Light format

This is the new option Dreamwidth implemented.

When enabled, comment and reply pages always get loaded in the style you've chosen. This is also transparent as nothing gets added to the URL. Magic!

As you can see, the two options are very similar and even overlap in some cases*. The main difference between the two is that option 1 requires you to click on some specific links while option 2 doesn't. If someone links to an entry page in their post and you click on the link, option 1 will not load it in your style. Option 2 will. If you click on the cut text, both options will load the entry in your style. The other difference is that one changes the URL while the other doesn't.

*To prevent this, option 2 isn't used when option 1 is and vice-versa. Except not always. If you have selected the light format for option 2 then it overrides option 1 for instance. As I said, it's complicated.

I suggest the first option to be phased out and to automatically set option 2 to 'my own style' for users who had checked option 1.

Why? I think option 1 seems simple but is actually uselessly complicated, and having these two options seems confusing to me. I also wonder whether many people chose to set 1 but not 2 and did so deliberately. From comments I've seen here and there, some people don't understand that entry pages and comment pages are one and the same, plus the description text for the the first option is vague because explaining how this option works exactly is impossible. It gets even more complicated if you add the fact that once you've got style=mine added to an URL, you're stuck with it so any link you will click on the page will get style=mine too. And let's not talk about Nav Strip overrides.

But what do I know, right? Hence this suggestion to see if it's a good or a terrible idea, and also to know why someone would deliberately use option 1 and not option 2 because it's intriguing. *g*

View Poll: Account Settings: merge 'Comment Pages' option with 'Entry View Style' option

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:576365yviDisable old crossposter links2011-08-11T20:04:02Z2011-08-11T20:04:02Zpublic4Posted by: yvi

Title:
Disable old crossposter links

Area:
Crossposting / Styles

Summary:
Have a way of disabling crossposting links on old entries

Description:
Currently, we can choose whether to display links to entries that are crossposted to another site. I never use that feature, always ignore the checkbox and start filling important information (like "which EFW stereotypical character am I going to be this time?") and once I'm done with the entry, I post it without giving that checkbox another thought. That approach works on LiveJournal, where the default (always unchecked) is what I expect. It doesn't, however, work on Dreamwidth.

I must have used that feature once on Dreamwidth, however (maybe by accident), because the checkbox is always checked, not unchecked as I expect it to be. However, because of the above, I never notice that until I check the entry or see it in my reading page. When I do, I can fix it easily for that entry by editing the entry, but that still leaves the wrong default for the next entry. I suppose I could post a dummy entry just to reset that (and in fact I'm going to do that as soon as I submit this suggestion), but I think I shouldn't need that trick, and besides it's inconsistent with the account settings option for the entry editor ("always RTE, "always HTML editor", and "whatever was used last" which is in effect the only option available for that dratted checkbox).

So I would like to have an equivalent setting for this checkbox, with the default option for this setting "whatever was used last" (for compatibility with current Dreamwidth behavior). The update page should only change the remembered default/initial setting if the user kept the option set to "whatever was used last", so the user-visible behavior won't change unless the user changes the setting from its initial value.

What should happen when posting from a client (including an external service - crossposting, reposting, daily Twitter digest, etc.) that doesn't specify a value for the "don't autoformat" parameter when sending entry data is less clear, and should probably be discussed with client developers on dw_dev. (This doesn't apply to clients, if any, who have their own user-configurable default for that option, only to those who don't supply any value for that field, perhaps because they don't know about it or because the protocol or API used doesn't make it possible or easy for them to - like clients using the Atom API.)

View Poll: Allow setting/clearing the "don't autoformat" default outside the posting form

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:440645Deepa D.More cities and GMT-style options in time zone selection2010-09-22T10:00:56Z2010-09-22T10:00:56Zpublic21Posted by: deepad

Title:
More cities and GMT-style options in time zone selection

Area:
posting

Summary:
The drop-down options right now to set your time zone offer an extremely limited number of Continent/City options to choose from. This should be increased and diversified to accomodate users from all parts of the world.

Description:
So in changing my time zone to get GMT + 5:30, I discovered that the only option I had was to select "Asia/Kolkata". No mention of Mumbai or Delhi or Bangalore or any of the other big cities, and worse, no GMT option.

This requires people not living in the US to have to look up which of the small and randomly chosen list of cities their location matches in the time zone department.

So I would suggest that the system either be changed to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), or else if the present Continent/City one remains an option, make it Continent/Country for all nations that have one time zone. Or if Continent/City must be kept, add to the number of cities represented.

View Poll: More cities and GMT-style options in time zone selection

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:350464ninetydegrees (90d)☕Settings: date display option2010-06-03T01:49:25Z2010-06-10T12:23:36Zpublic33Posted by: ninetydegrees

Title:
Settings: date display option

Area:
settings

Summary:
We'll soon have the shiny 24h time display option. Can we please have something for dates?

Description:
Let users choose how they want dates to be displayed on the site (and in journals which haven't customized it?): yyyy-mm-dd (i.e. the current format), mm-dd-yyyy or dd-mm-yyyy.

I don't care about separators ( - or / or .) but being able to choose the order these are displayed in would be great. The current format isn't used in my country and I often confuse month and day.

Edit to clarify:

I'm suggesting it be implemented exactly the way the 24h option has been implemented: "this will respect the viewer's preferences in sitescheme pages, and whenever the journal owner has not customized the time for their journal."

Meaning that if someone's overridden the way time is displayed in their layout via Customize/Advanced Customizations, the viewer's own setting won't be applied. The same way you see one's chosen colors, chosen font size, etc. unless you use ?style=mine.

Comments suggest that some users would rather have their settings override all and any other user's settings/customizations. I propose that the user's previously stated preference be preserved throughout theme changes.

Description:
DW users choose styles: Tropospherical, Celerity, etc. They also choose whether to view those styles on entry/comment pages or to view comment pages in the style of the journal theme, aka app style, by checking or not checking the box marked "Show entry pages in my journal style rather than the app style." (I find this language very vague and confusing since everywhere else on the site "theme" is prevalent over the term "app style," but that's probably another suggestion.) However, every time the user changes journal theme, that box resets itself and site display defaults back to entry/comment pages in the app style.

My philosophy is that once a user has checked a box to state a preference, that preference should remain unless specifically changed. Particularly during the current development of new themes, I am interested in trying out new themes, and to have my preference for entry pages displaying in Celerity undone is incredibly annoying. Since journal style and theme are different things that are controlled on different areas of the site, it makes no sense that this single style preference should be tied to theme changes. At the very least, the journal/app box should be made more obvious in relation to theme changes, if it must be reset every time the user changes their theme.

The main drawback I can think of is that users changing theme may expect their entry pages to follow suit regardless of their previous preference. I think many users may not be aware of the journal/app style checkbox at all, so possibly that needs some better publicity or language. My alternate suggestion is to move the journal/app style checkbox to the theme page so it is more convenient for the user to re-check the box rather than go to a different page entirely.

View Poll: Preserve journal style/app style preference

commentstag:dreamwidth.org,2009-02-09:40:102990melannenContent warning cuts on reading list2009-09-10T09:13:02Z2009-09-10T15:42:59Zpublic15Posted by: melannen

Title:
Content warning cuts on reading list

Area:
Adult content warnings

Summary:
The lj-cut text that shows up on a reading list and journal pages for entries in journals and communities with adult content filters is misleading.

Description:
When someone logged out (or otherwise having adult content filters set) is looking at a reading page containing entries from journals and communities that have set adult content warnings, the entries are replaced with cuts with a preset text.

All entries flagged 18+/adult content get the text "You're about to view content that a community administrator has marked as possibly inappropriate for anyone under the age of 18." - referencing a community administrator - even when the entry is in a private journal, which makes it appear that the flag could have been set by somebody other than the journal owner.

Conversely, all entries with the viewer discretion flag set get the text "You're about to view content which the journal owner has advised should be viewed with discretion.
